Title: Fond

Pairing: BB/DM
Rating: G
Summary: Billy meets Dom for the first time and recalls a memory long forgotten.
Feedback: Would be appreciated, but unbeta'd so please forgive my errors.
Disclaimer: Not at all true in reality. This is why fantasy is so popular.
A/N: Just a little glimpse into what could’ve happened, but highly unlikely. Written in about 20 minutes. Also the shortest fic I've ever written.
When the young Brit bounds through the door, Billy’s eyes widen.
In an instant, time has rewound and suddenly Billy is sixteen, visiting the zoo in Berlin with Margaret and his grandmother while on summer break. A trip that the siblings were supposed to have taken with their parents. He’s in the marine section, wandering around alone when he spots the younger boy.
He’s about eight years old, his dark blonde hair framing his baby face and curling at the nape of his neck. Standing next to another boy that Billy presumes is his older brother, he presses up against the glass to watch the dolphins frolic playfully.
While some would’ve have described him as awkward, with his crooked jaw, protruding ears and squashed up nose, it’s the light that shines from inside the boy that steals Billy’s breath. The uninhibited joy that pours off of his narrow shoulders in waves.
Billy starts to walk over to the boy to get a closer look, maybe say hello, but then a tall, slender woman approaches the boys.
“Matthew? Dominic? It’s time to go.”
“Mum,” the younger boy protests. “We just got here.”
It’s then that Billy spots the family resemblance. The same beautiful blue-grey eyes that are so expressive and the same cheeky smile.
“Dominic, if you want to see the spiders, we need to go,” she adds.
“Arachnids, Mum,” he corrects while his older brother rolls his eyes in dramatic fashion.
“Yes, Dominic,” the woman replies.
Silently he watches them walk over to the exit where a man is waiting for them. When the man ruffles Dominic’s hair and pulls him close for a hug, Billy smiles. Dominic. Nice name. Quite lovely, even.
And then Billy is pulled back to the present, his eyes remembering the boy in the young man before him.
“Dominic Monaghan,” he introduces himself with a lopsided grin. “Call me Dom.”
“Billy,” he manages to reply, hoping that the shock isn’t evident in his eyes. “Billy Boyd.”
In minutes they are well on their way to becoming the best of mates. You see, Billy’s always been fond of the name Dominic.

I can't remember who wrote it, but somebody posted a ficlet about Dom getting lost as a boy in a Batman t-shirt and Billy helped him find his Mum again. The idea for this came from there. Also, I needed to write something innocent after finishing up part 7 (NC-17) of the Rush series.
Glad you enjoyed.

It's so cute, and I love the idea of Dom and Billy meeting before Rings started. It would seem strange for two people who so obviously belong together not to have met before.
I know that I'm going to read this one whenever your other fics get me sad. I've got a big grin on my face :D

Call it the romantic in me, but I like to think that their souls met in another life, maybe more than once, and they keep finding each other, hoping that this time they'll get to ge together.

I was in the mood for fluff when I wrote this, and I think it shows.
