Title: There's No Doubt
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lavitanuova Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Billy/Dom
Summary: Happy Birthday, Dom.
Disclaimer: It's all made up. Except the people.

Dom is not sure if this is going to be a good day or not.

He wakes up to his mobile ringing.

He flicks it open and mumbles hello and is greeted by the first strands of guitar music – Billy, he knows, without looking at the screen, because he just knows Billy’s touch instinctively, be it to his own skin or the string of the instrument.

There’s no doubt about it now, youth is gone...

It’s actually a rather lovely song, and Dom can appreciate the humour on Billy’s behalf – being that Billy is actually over 30 himself, and therefore as old and decrepit as they come, and off his rocker, to boot. Senile, as Dom has reminded Billy over the many years.

Dom enjoys it only to the extent that he always enjoys Billy singing. He tries not to let the knot of worry in his stomach overcome the smile that the music coaxes from him.

“Happy Birthday.” Billy says when he’s finished, and hangs up the phone. Dom’s pretty sure that it won’t be the last time he hears from Billy that day, but he can’t be sure, so the little knot grows.

He’s filming that day, but they have a little celebration over lunch, with a cake and beer (but please folks, let’s not overindulge, we have half a day’s shoot left) and Dom gets small gifts from everyone, a very nice scarf from Evey and sunglasses from Harold and a Hawaiian print shirt from Fox. He thanks everyone sincerely, smiles and knocks back another (because yes, he can hold his liquor, thank you very much) and checks his mobile again for any missed calls.

It’s well on to night time by the time shooting wraps for the day, and the first thing he does – even before getting de-Charlie’d, is run to his trailer and check his mobile. He has two missed calls, and a voicemail. He checks the voicemail first. Elijah and Hannah have left a message together, singing him happy birthday and promising that a present is on the way, and one or the other will be down to visit him soon.

He returns the other two calls – his mum, and another friend – and thinks about calling Billy, but doesn’t.

He goes out for dinner with a few of his new mates, but ducks out for an invitation of drinks. He’s not really tired, but he’s fighting off the birthday blues and all he wants just then are old friends, friends that already know him. He wants to be teased about the stupid, fun things he did on birthday’s passed

He wants Elijah, or Billy, or Astin, or Orli. He wants his brother, or his mates from Manchester. Someone comforting. Someone that doesn’t expect him to be cheerful all the time.

He checks his letter box and finds four cards, three pieces of junk mail, a catalogue, and a slip of paper saying that he had a package waiting. He knows that the package was from his mum, she’d told him so over the phone earlier.

There’s a card from Astin (signed by Allie and Bethy, as well) and one from an old mate and one from an ex-girlfriend, the one that still calls him once a while and would probably like to get back together, since he’s gone and gotten famous. The other card is from Orli, but it isn’t Orli’s hand writing on the envelope or even inside the card. Dom appreciates the effort, but he almost wishes that Orli just not.

He settles onto the sofa and calls Elijah back. They talk for a few minutes, but Dom can hear noise in the background, and tells Elijah that he has somewhere to be. Elijah sounds relieved.

He’s just drifted off to sleep when his mobile rings again. “’lo?” He mumbles into it, much the same way he had that morning.

And Billy’s voice greets him, much as it had that morning. He has that far away sound, like his mouth isn’t quite in front of the mouthpiece, but Dom is just happy to hear him. “Get your arse in gear and come pick me up,” Billy says.

It takes second for that to sink in. “Bill…?”

”I’m at the airport, now come and get me.”
Dom hangs up the phone and grabs his jacket and his car keys.

“You’re bloody barefoot,” Billy says, but he’s grinning, and Dom’s quite sure that everyone in the terminal can hear his heart pounding.

“You’re bloody late,” Dom responds, and they crush each other in equally enthusiastic hugs.

“You know me, I shouldn’t want to rush into anything!” Billy says in his Pippin voice, which over the years has somehow because less annoying and more endearing to Dom. It used to be that Dom didn’t like to hear Pippin seeping out of Billy. It had always felt to him more like losing Billy to the hobbit inside him.

“Forgot my shoes,” Dom says sheepishly, but Billy doesn’t seem to mind really. They head for the car, and Dom has to direct Billy to the passenger side, because Billy always gets confused.

“If you’ve a house full of people, you’ll need to send them home.” Billy says, and he’s yawning. Another habit of Billy’s – he doesn’t sleep on flights, simply gives in to the jetlag once he’s grounded.

They don’t speak much on the drive home, but it doesn’t bother Dom. This is what he wanted – someone to be silent with. “You haven’t told me happy birthday yet.” Dom says, as they pull into his driveway.

“Daftie. I told you happy birthday twice already.”

“On the phone, doesn’t count. You have to tell me again.” He shifts his gaze over as the motor dies.

“Happy Birthday, Dom.” Billy says and sighs, grabbing his single carry on bag from the backseat and getting out of the car.

Billy leaves his bag by the front door and collapses on the couch, tilting his head back to look up at Dom. “I need a beer.”

Dom turns on his heels and heads for the kitchen, taking two glass bottles from the side door and popping the tops off. “Master,” He says, and bows, handing Billy the bottle.

“Very nice.” Billy shifts his feet over so Dom can sit down. “Now. I’m sure you’ll be asking why I’m here soon?”

“Not to wish me a happy birthday in person?” Dom takes on a wounded expression. Billy smiles a little, and Dom realizes just how tired he really looks. “What’s up?”

Billy clears his throat a little. “I came to apologize, and to give you your birthday present, if you want it. Me. If you want me.”

What the fuck.

“What the fuck?” Dom couldn’t have been more surprised if Billy had suddenly announced his plans for that long discussed sex change.

Billy buries his face in his hands and sort of smiles. “Ali and I broke up. I broke up with her. It wasn’t working.”

Dom lets his head drop back against the couch cushion. “Why?” He isn’t quite sure why he sounds so irritated, even a little angry, but he does.

“That’s your first question? I thought you’d be elated. You never liked her.”

”What can I say, I’m not fond of birds that steal my boyfriend.” Dom says wryly.

“She didn’t steal me, Dom. It was my choice. And I only met her after.” Billy’s voice is soft and slow, as if he’s talking to a small child. “You know that.”

”I know,” Dom says. “But still, why?”

”Because I miss you. You’ve spoiled me for anyone else.”

“You sure fooled me. You’ve been with her for three years, Billy. Doesn’t seem like I spoiled you too much.”

“Ah, shite, Dom. You know we weren’t serious for the first year and a half. And we both knew it wasn’t a long term thing. We get along well enough, the sex isn’t bad, but even after a year of living together, it didn’t feel like there was anything connecting us.”

This is all new information for Dom. Billy’s been careful not to speak of Ali to much to him, not to mention her or bring her around unless there was a group of people. In the past, Dom has appreciated as much as resented this.

“So you just up and left her?”

“No,” Billy’s little non-smile returns. “We decided it a week ago. But I held off on telling anyone… dramatic effect,” He says. “Thought it might be nice coming on your birthday.”

“And what if I’m over you?” He isn’t sure if he’s trying to pick a fight or not.

Billy shrugs. “Then I go back home, and we don’t speak of it again.”

“So you want to get back together?”

Billy sits up, and leans forward. He’s got his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands, but tilted so that he can see Dom. “I do.”

“Because… you miss me?”

“I do.”

“You live in Scotland. With any luck, I’ll be in Hawaii for a while. You broke up with me the first time because you didn’t want a long distance relationship. You wanted someone accessible.”

“And I still do. But I can’t have that. And I want you more. I’ve cleared off my schedule for the next two weeks.”

“But you only brought one bag.” Dom points out.

“Didn’t want to seem optimistic.” Billy stifles a yawn with the back of his.

“You’re tired,” Dom smiles. He wants to reach over and brush Billy’s hair back – its growing longer, and he likes it – but he keeps his hands to himself for the moment. “Let’s go to bed.”

“No,” Billy says, and he sounds determined. “Not without an answer from you. I’ve spent the last week worrying about this. I had at least a dozen different scenarios planned – bringing you flowers, buying a ring, sneaking in and making dinner.” Billy stops, even though it sounds to Dom like he wasn’t finished talking.

“And? Why didn’t you?” He’s a little intrigued by the ring comment, but also a little scared by it, so he leaves it alone.

“Because I thought it’d be damned embarrassing if I went to a lot of trouble and you said no.”

“Well how do you know that a nice bottle of wine and a dozen roses wouldn’t have swayed me?” Dom smirks, and does reach out, just for the sake of touching Billy, who looks so tense that Dom wants to offer him a cigarette.

Billy jumps a little when Dom’s hand brushes his forehead, but then he smiles. “Shall I go away, then, and come back tomorrow, with wine and roses?”

“Nah,” Dom makes a dismissive noise. “If we’ve only got two weeks, no need to waste time.” He stands up, and reaches down for Billy’s hand. “Come on, Boyd. I think its time you take me to bed.”

Billy’s smile beams, and his arms go around Dom’s waist in a tight hug. “I’ve been such a stupid arse, Dommie, and you shouldn’t forgive me at all, I don’t know that I would if I were you…”

“But you’re not me,” Dom whispers, “And I love you, and you know it, and I know it, so let’s just go to bed and talk about it in the morning, all right?”

Billy nods into Dom’s neck and takes a deep breath, one that fades into a yawn. “All right. But can I wish you a happy birthday first?”

“Sure,” Dom pulls back from the hug and bumps his forehead against Billy’s. He gets a thrill thinking that Billy is going to kiss him now, kiss him for the first time in years. And Billy does kiss him, but his kiss isn’t quite what Dom remembers – it’s too soft and too hesitant, and Dom misses the Billy that was his in New Zealand, but then Billy’s tongue slips out and presses against Dom’s lips and Dom gets another thrill and thinks that maybe it won’t be such a bad thing, getting to know new Billy just as well as he knew the old one.

Hmmm. Billy's a bit cocky, yeah?
I like him that way, though.
Nicely done. I'd love to see more.

I liked this a lot-- for all that it was a surprise visit, and for all that they got back together, it wasn't fluffy. It had a real edge to it, but it still ended happily, which is an interesting combination.
