Summary: Dom comes home.
Dom was a wreck. Dom was in L.A., and Billy was at home in Glasgow. But Dom had felt they were worlds apart. Dom had spent the last six months trying to drown Billy out of his memories with alcohol. His friends had tried to help, not knowing what exactly to do. Most had tried to talk to Billy, but he would just say he was busy and change the subject. Most felt Billy was being unfair. Most were shocked when Billy ended his relationship with Dom when filming had stopped. Dom was devastated, but was unable to tell Billy how he really felt.
Dom had wasted his chance to ensure that their relationship would continue after filming. Dom never told anyone about Billy confessing his love for him one night they were alone at the shire location. Neither had Billy. Not even when their friends were calling Billy and questioning him about how he left things with Dom. Not even that night when Viggo called, screaming at Billy. That was the night everything was revealed to their friends.
“Dom you have never been alone in this heartache. This started months ago, and you know it. The rest of those guys sit there having pity for you and cursing me. But I never said anything. I never said anything after that night in the shire. We may have been in New Zealand another seven months together, but I was alone! All along I felt alone.” These words had haunted Dom for the past few weeks.
Dom had never considered that Billy might be sitting at home hurting. He now knew he had hurt Billy long before Billy hurt Dom. Billy never said anything. Never got himself into such a state that their friends had to take care of him on a nightly basis at times. Billy’s heart had been broken over a year ago that night in the shire, but he never said anything. That was Billy.
After that night Dom spoke with Billy things were different. Viggo, Orlando and Lij felt somewhat deceived by Dom. They didn’t abandon Dom by any means, but they saw things different now that they knew the truth. All this time they thought Billy was being callus and letting Dom suffer. None of them knew Billy was the one who had been in pain the longest.
Viggo felt the worst most of all. He had considered himself a close friend to both men. Why had he never picked up on Billy plight? Why had Dom never confided in him?
He had spoken to Billy a few times since he had learned the truth. Billy was in just as much pain as Dom. He wanted to be with Dom, but felt he would always resent the fact that Dom had not told Billy how he felt.
“But Billy, he did. It took him over a year, but he told you he loved you that night you two talked.”
Billy considered this and asked Viggo, “Do you think it could ever be the same?”
“That’s something only you and Dom can answer.”
Viggo had stayed up many nights with Dom trying to help his friend understand how Billy felt. Though Viggo himself was having a hard time understanding.
Orlando and Elijah felt guilty for the things they had said about Billy. Of course, they had never said any of these things to Dom. Maybe if they had, Dom would have told them everything. One day over lunch Orlando and Elijah talked about their friend’s situation.
“As mad as I was at Dom at first, now I feel even worse for him,” Orlando told Elijah.
Elijah had been smoking a cigarette and about choked when these words came out of Orli’s mouth. “What?!”
“Think about it Lij. There he was, in pain and all, there we were trying to take care of him. Telling him things would be OK. It just wasn’t meant to be. And the whole time Dom knew it was because of him they were not together. All along he held the burden of knowing he could be with Billy right then if only he had told him how he felt. He had seven months to do it,” Orlando paused so they could give the waiter their order.
As the waiter walked away Elijah said, “You’re right. He was hurting more than we thought. Damn, I didn’t think that was possible.”
Orlando considered this for a moment. “Yeah, me either. Poor Bills. He is such a nice guy he never said anything to any of us in order to protect Dom,” Orlando shook his head as he continued, “Doesn’t pay to be the nice guy.”
Elijah smiled and asked, “Is that the moral to this story, Mr. Bloom?”
“I’m serious Lij. It may be a cliché, but nice guys do finish last. You know, I said that to Billy the other day when I spoke with him.”
“What did he say?”
“In true Billy fashion he said nice guys might finish last, but at least their conscious was clear.”
Elijah laughed as he said, “Yeah that’s our Billy. Noble to the bitter end.”
It had been three weeks since Billy and Dom had spoke.
“I love you Billy. I’m so very sorry. I’m so tired Billy, so tired.”
“ So am I Dom. So am I.”
That was how they had left it. Neither was able to say anything more, so Billy hung up. Dom stood there holding the receiver dying just a little more.
Billy had spent the last three weeks trying to make a decision. Could he forgive Dom? Could he forgive Dom for not telling him he loved him before leaving New Zealand? Could he forgive Dom for allowing their friends to believe Billy was such a bastard in this relationship? Billy knew Dom loved him. He did not doubt that. What he did doubt was his ability to forgive Dom for making the past year a living hell.
Every day in New Zealand after that night in the shire Billy waited for Dom to tell him he loved him. With every passing day that Dom did not say it, Billy knew it was one more day closer to the end of their relationship. Billy did not want to continue this farce long distance.
Billy gave Dom until the their last day in New Zealand to say it. When he didn’t Billy knew Dom had no intention of saying it, much less feeling it. Billy had summoned up all his courage and gave the best performance of his life as he told Dom it was over. He said things like it had been fun, now was the time to get on with their lives, new movies to make, new people to meet. Dom just sat there looking at him He never said a word. Billy had gone to the last cast party that night, but left after only two hours.
Billy was unaware of how upset Dom had been over the break up until Elijah told him four months later! Billy had kept in contact with Elijah, Orlando and Viggo. Yet none of them said a thing about Dom, and Billy never asked.
Once Billy knew about Dom, one of them would call Billy and want to talk to him about him. He would politely but firmly change the subject.
Viggo was the most persistent. It had gotten to the point that Billy would hang up abruptly when he spoke with Viggo in order to stop himself from telling Viggo about that night in the shire. By now Billy was sure Dom had not told any of their friends about that night, and if that was how Dom wanted it, Billy was not going to tell them.
Billy sat for hours sorting everything out. Suddenly he stood up. He had made his decision.
The next morning Dom woke to the sound of some one knocking on his door. He looked at the clock. 10:30am.
“GO AWAY!”
He just wanted to stay in bed until a respectable hour to start drinking again. He figured he had another hour.
The knocking continued. Dom figured it must be Viggo. He was so persistent. Dom drug himself out of bed and made his way to the front door.
As he was opening the door he was saying, “Viggo you know I don’t get up till beer-thirty…Oh I’m sorry.”
“I have an overnight letter for a Dominic Monaghan,” the fed Ex man said as he thrust a clipboard towards Dom. “Please sign.” Dom signed for the letter had closed the door.
He opened the letter. He pulled out a one way ticket to Glasgow, Scotland and a letter. Dom tore opened the letter and recognized Billy’s handwriting.
My Dearest Dom,
I am sending you this key to my heart in hopes that you will come home
and give me life again. It’s an open date ticket, so if you choose to, you
come whenever you are ready. I love you and I want you here with me.
I will be right here waiting for you. I will wait for all eternity for you. I will
never love anyone again. Remember the good times, Dom. It can be that
way again. Come home, Dommie. Come home to me. I love you.
Forever Yours,
Billy
Dom fell to his knees with tears in his eyes. He was going home. Finally, he was going home.
