Summary: All kinds of friends help Billy and Dom
CHAPTER FIVE
Billy was seen at the hospital and was told he would be fine, but he had to rest for the next few days. The doctor asked if he had someone to stay with him. Dom and Billy looked at each other and almost immediately Dom had answered the doctor with a confirmed YES. Billy smiled and said a silent thank you to whoever had been watching over him.
As they were walking out of the hospital, the nurse who had assisted the doctor in the emergency
room with Billy approached them.
“Excuse me,” she said.
“Yes,” Dom said.
“I wanted to tell you that if you bruise at all you are going to have a whale of one on your back where your board hit you. Vitamin K cream is wonderful for keeping the swelling and bruising to a minimum.”
Billy thanked the nurse and he and Dom proceeded to Dom’s car. Billy was starting to feel sore, so when Dom offered an arm around his waist to help him walk he took it. Dom opened the passenger side door and help Billy sit and reached across him to fastened his seat belt for him.
“Dom, I’m not a helpless baby.”
As he reach across Billy’s lap to snap the buckle shut, their faces were so close Billy could feel Dom’s breath.
Dom looked into Billy’s eyes and said, “I wouldn’t want anything else to happen to my Bills.” Dom stood and circled the car. Billy watched Dom walk in front of the car and open the driver side door. Billy was smiling and was so very thankful he had Dom. Even if it would only be as a friend. Billy felt that no matter what had been said, no matter what else they felt for each other, he knew they would always be close friends.
“My car is still at the beach,” Billy said thinking aloud.
“Don’t worry. I’ll call Lij or Orli and they’ll take care of it. What we need to do is pick up some supplies for your kitchen and some of that stuff for your back.”
They stopped at a market and Billy waited in the car while Dom ran in to pick up a few things. Billy sat there trying to absorb what had happened to him. He was sure the shock of it all would probably hit him, and hit him hard. He was comforted by thought that Dom would be there for him. Billy laid his head back and closed his eyes. Billy wasn’t sure but he may have drifted off. The sound of a car horn awoke him.
“What was I thinking going surfing alone? If Dom ever pulled a stunt like that I’d kick his ass,” Billy was thinking, “How will I ever be able to thank Dom for saving me today?” The reality of what had happened started to hit him. “I could have died. Just like that died. Thank God Dom found me. I wondering what he was doing on the beach? He wasn’t in a wet suit.” Billy train of thought was broken by the sound of Dom opening the car door.
Dom looked at Billy and asked, “You alright, mate?”
“Yea, Dom, I’m alright. It’s just that everything is starting to hit me. A bit scary that’s all.”
Dom reached out with his hand and touched Billy’s leg. He gave it a squeeze and told him, “You’re in good hands now. You’re safe. I won’t let anything happen to you. Promise, ok?”
“OK, Dom, ok.”
“Let’s get you home and comfortable. Are you hurting anywhere?”
Billy thought about replying with, “My heart no longer hurts now that you are here with me.” But he thought better and replied, “I’m starting to feel sore. My back really hurts. That nurse is probably right. I’m going to have one hell of a bruise back there.”
“No you won’t. I picked up some of that cream she talked about. That’s what took me a little while. I had to go next door to the nature shop. The clerk swore by it, but said you have to put it on at least twice a day.”
“Mmm huh,” was all Billy could get out before nodding off.
When they arrived at Billy’s place, Dom got out of the car and went around to Billy’s side and opened the door. Billy was still asleep. It had taken them about 30 minutes to get there from the shop, and Dom had let Billy sleep. No music, no humming or whistling like he was prone to do. He wanted Billy to sleep. He enjoyed driving with the only sound of his and Billy’s breathing. He smiled the entire drive stealing a glance at Billy when he could.
Dom reached into the car and unbuckled Billy’s seat belt. Billy stirred and Dom whispered, “It’s ok Bills. We’re home. Come on, let’s get you to bed.” With Dom’s help Billy got out of the car and into his home. Dom sat Billy down at the dining room table as he went back out to the car for the groceries. When he came back in he went to the kitchen to put things away.
“Billy you want a shower? Maybe you should take a bath. Billy? Bills…” Panic struck Dom. Oh God, why didn’t he answer. Dom tore out of the kitchen into the dining room expecting to find Billy on the floor. The room was empty.
“Billy, where are you!?”
“Out here. By the sliders.”
Dom walked into the living room and found Billy standing next to the sliding glass doors, leaning against the wall and looking out at the sky as the sun was setting.
“Beautiful, isn’t it? You know Dom, I came very close today to never seeing another sun set. I can’t thank you enough. You saved my life Dom. Just saying thank you doesn’t seem enough…” Billy trailed off as he stared at the sky.
Dom walked up next to him and said, “You being ok is thanks enough. I’ve never been so scared in my life than I was when I saw you lying there half in the water.”
They were both silent for a moment. Dom broke the silence saying, “You want a shower or bath?”
Billy wanted to lie down in his bed, but knew he needed to wash off. “I think I might fancy a bath. Don’t feel like standing longer than I have to.”
Billy went into his room for a change of clothing. He was just walking out of his room when he heard the water in the bathroom running. He peeked in and saw Dom sitting on the side of the bath swaying his hand through the water. Billy entered and Dom looked up.
“Oh, here you go. Not to hot, not to cold. I’ve put your shower gel that you like on the side of the tub, and there is a towel on the vanity. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me. Enjoy your bath.” With that Dom stood, and walked past Billy, but not before squeezing Billy’s hand.
Billy knew that Dom had prepared his bath and touched his hand for the sole reason that he was happy his friend was alive. It felt good to be taken care of. Especially by Dom.
Billy took off his shorts and shirt and slipped into the bath. Dom was right. Not to hot, not to cold. As Billy laid back he winced at the pain of the tub coming into contact with what was sure to be a bad bruise.
Dom busied himself in the kitchen putting groceries away, and making himself a sandwich. He took his meal out to the living room and sat on the sofa. He was almost finished eating when he saw his friend, the neighbor’s dog, making an appearance from underneath the fence.
Dom opened the sliders and leaned out. With the sun setting the temperature was falling, but somehow it didn’t chill Dom. The dog sat in his usual spot, so Dom took his spot in the patio chair. He patted the dog and told him, “He’s fine. Close call, but he’s fine. Thanks to you old friend. I’ll have to remember to get you something special.”
The dog wagged his tail and turned his head to look at Dom. The dog’s eyes were sympathetic and Dom could have sworn the dog smiled at him. Dom smiled back and the dog took off around the house. Dom chuckled saying, “You go boy. Have a night out. You’ve deserved it.”
Dom was cleaning up the kitchen when Billy entered. He was wearing baby blue boxer shorts and a blue terry cloth robe hanging loosely from his shoulders. Dom caught himself staring at Billy’s chest. Billy had the finest chest hair. Strawberry blonde, bleached from days at the beach, and looked like it would feel like silk to the touch.
Dom looked away towards the sink, and asked, “Are you hungry? I could make you a sandwich or soup?”
Billy walked up behind Dom and said, “Dom, I don’t know what to say. The last week has been the worst of my life. But I realize I now have that life because of you. You saved me today.”
Dom turned around to look at Billy. They stood there looking into each other’s eyes. Neither ready to say anything more.
Billy broke the silence saying, “No matter what has been said or how we may feel I want you to know I will always be here for you. You are my best mate. Viggo said something to me the other day that I now understand. I can live with you not wanting anything more from me than friendship. I can’t live without you in my life. I owe you everything for what you did today. I will be whatever you want. I’m going to go lie down.”
Billy turned and took a few steps, then turned back to Dom and said, “What were you doing on the beach when you found me? I mean the chances of you coming along just in the nick of time are pretty slim.”
Dom smiled. He had not thought of the reason he had been drawn to find Billy. The overwhelming feeling that something was wrong with Billy had shown him the way to Billy. Well, that and the neighbor’s dog.
“I guess fate was on our side that day mate,” Dom said. No need to go into that whole thing now. Billy needed rest.
“So it was. So it was.” With a smile Billy turned and went to bed.
