The knocking was incessant and it was all Dom could do to ignore it. But after 10 minutes of constant knocking, Dom picked himself up out of his chair and opened the door. Billy stood there looking apologetic. “Will you at least allow me to explain? Please?” he said. Dom opened the door wider and stood aside to allow Billy to enter. “You’ve not been to work. Why on earth not?”
Dom just looked at Billy.
Billy sat himself down on the sofa and patted the space next to him, meaning for Dom to sit next to him. Dom chose to sit in the chair closest to the kitchen. “Remember that day when we came home from Venice,” Billy started, “and everybody was waiting at home for me? You went home early?” He looked at Dom and took a deep breath before continuing “Well after you left Orlando came up and asked to talk to me, said it was important. I didn’t really have the time, so I told him that if he came back the following day, I would have more time then. He then told me that it was about you, and that it was something that I really needed to know.” He looked at Dom again, who was sitting there fixing Billy with a stare. “He kept going on about how important it was and eventually I just gave in. I was worried that there was someone else, that you had a boyfriend…that you had just been making a fool out of me. But then he started going on about how HE had met this guy, someone called Viggo who said that he knew you. I couldn’t see where it was going. He told me that this Viggo worked for a government agency, and that you worked there too. That you had been sent to spy on me and bring me or my organisation to justice.” Billy paused and again he looked at Dom, who was now looking at the floor. “I didn’t know what to think, but Orlando kept saying it was true and that he could prove it. I didn’t want to believe it. I mean it didn’t make sense…you weren’t like all the others that had been sent to try and find out things. I had found them all out, killed them or simply made it impossible for them to be found. But you, you weren’t like them. You were good.” Here Billy smiled, “Very good. Not that I make a habit of shagging people sent to spy on me,” He added quickly. “I didn’t want to believe him, but then he came with the proof a few days later. He had stuff that he took from Viggo’s office about this mission…about you. It upset me Dom. You who I trusted, who I took with me everywhere, who I was completely honest about everything with… you had lied to me. Lied Dom. I couldn’t let it get out, I couldn’t. I knew that I was in deep this time, so I did what I thought anyone in my position would do. I killed for you. I killed Orlando ‘cause I love you, and he could have ruined everything.”
“But why Viggo? What did he do to you?” Dom broke his silence and Billy got up and knelt in front of him.
He placed a hand on his knee and continued. “I guess I was still mad. Mad that he had told Orlando about you. I blamed him for this, just as much as I blamed Orlando for telling me.” Dom moved Billy’s hand off his knee and stood up.
He emerged from his room holding Billy’s sword and held it out to him. Billy pulled it from its cover and gazed at it lovingly, the way he sometimes looked at Dom. Billy put the sword back into its cover and walked over to Dom. He kissed him, tentatively at first, but when Dom responded, he deepened the kiss and began to pull Dom towards the bedroom.
Dom didn’t really know what to do next. His cover was blown, but Billy still wanted to be with him. He thought about telling his boss but that would mean losing his job, everything he had worked and hoped for since he was a kid. He looked across at the sleeping Billy, who had a small smile on his lips, lying in his bed. ‘What was the phrase, up shit creek without a paddle? Yep that just about sums me up at this moment’ Dom thought. He got out of bed as quietly and gently as possible and walked into the kitchen. The clock read 3.45 AM. He would have to be at work in just over 5 hours. He put the kettle on and sat at the table, waiting for it to boil. The quiet was broken by a ringing noise coming from the living room. It wasn’t Dom’s phone, his had a different ring, and it certainly wasn’t his mobile since that played “Glory, Glory Man Utd”. He located the ringing…it was coming from Billy’s jacket pocket. He took out the phone and carried it to his room. Gently he shook Billy awake. “Billy. Bill, your phone, it’s been ringing.” He handed the phone to the barely awake Scot and left the room.
Five minutes later two arms wrapped themselves around his waist. “I have to go, will you come with me? It’s important.” Dom by now had figured that “important” meant that someone was going to die. He hoped it wasn’t going to be him.
They got downstairs to find Billy’s driver waiting for them. “Is this going to take long Billy? It’s only that I’m starting back to work today, and I need to be there for 9.” Dom looked at Billy, who stared out of the window.
“We should be finished by then, I’ll get John to drop you off at work, it’s not a problem.” He replied, still looking out the window.
This time they went to Billy’s home. The house was empty, and this made Dom extremely nervous.
