“Are you sure you wanna go back with him?”
Elijah’s eyes were full of concern when he looked at Billy who sipped a soda and sighed.
“I have to, Lighe...he needs me now...”
Dom was sitting in the livingroom, using Elijah’s laptop to check the newspages for planecrashs.
“Just look at him, Elwood...he needs a friend by his side.”
Elijah peeped through the kitchen door to where Dom was sitting and hitting the refresh button over and over again.
“I guess what he really does need now, is Babybun...Lena.”
Hearing her name made Billy’s whole body tense.
“Gosh, Bills, I’m sorry.” Elijah’s eyes were filling with tears again.
“No need to be, Lighe...I know you’re right...but if I ever want to get over this, I’ll have to do it now. Or at least try...”
Billy ran a hand through his hair and sighed.
“I guess we should leave now...he’s a wreck...he needs distraction.”
Elijah nodded slowly. “Yeah, probably you’re right...but take care there, alright? And call me if you need me...you know I’ll be there. I still have another two weeks until I have to leave for work again.”
“Sure...I will. Thanks, Lighe...for everything.”
Billy hugged the young man close and pressed his face into the slender shoulder.
“You’re welcome, Bills...we have to stick together, y’know? The fellowship of broken hearts...”
Billy couldn’t help but smile a bit when he let go of Elijah and walked over to the livingroom.
“Ready to go, Dommeh?”
Dom shot around. “How long does it take to get to Spain?”
Billy gathered all his strength and knelt down beside Dom. “Dunno...something like ten hours, I’d say...at least.”
“She should be anywhere over the Atlantic Ocean right now...”
“I think so...c’mon, Dom, let’s go home...you can check the news there.”
“Do you think she’s okay?”
“Of course she is. You worked on ‘Lost’ too much, Dom...not every plane crashes.”
Dom sighed. “Yeah, I hope you’re right...okay...we’ll go home.”
He got up and turned to Elijah who was leaning in the kitchen doorway.
“Doodle, we’re off then...thanks for letting me use your computer.”
“Anytime, Dom...you know that. Give my love to Lena when she calls, okay?”
Billy felt Elijah’s need to say something else, felt the fight the young man had with himself and gave him a sad smile behind Dom’s back.
“See you later, Elwood...and thanks for letting me stay last night.”
They hugged again. “Keep me posted if he hears anything...and don’t forget I’m here for you...” Elijah whispered before letting go of Billy and opening his front door.
Dom waved at Elijah and walked over to his car, Billy turned around once again and nodded.
“Take care, Elwood...” he mouthed before getting into the old BMW.
Once the two of them were gone, Elijah took Dom’s seat in front of the laptop and started staring at the newspages himself, hitting refresh with shaking hands.
Dom barely took his time to get out of the car when he pulled up in front of his house.
He left it to Billy to slam the door shut and wordlessly ran into the house.
The Scot stared after his friend for some seconds before he followed him inside, only to find Dom fumbling with the RC until he finally got CNN on the televisionscreen.
The next second, the remote hit the ground.
The top corner of the screen showed the familiar red sign. “Breaking News”.
Billy saw Dom’s body tense and quickly walked over to the sofa, picked up the RC and turned up the volume.
A lady whose face didn’t show any emotions filled the screen.
“...no survivors.”
Dom started shaking violently. “No...”, he mouthed. “No.”
Billy sat down beside him and pulled him close.
“No!” Dom’s face crashed into Billy’s shoulder and painfully dry sobs shook the younger man’s body.
Guilt flowed over Billy when he realized he actually felt relief. He quickly tried to force it away by imagining it was him sitting there, hearing about such news when Dom was on his way to the other end of the world, when...
“I repeat: An accident involving a bus and seven cars in West Virginia killed 74 people. So far, there seem to be no survivors.”
Billy stared open-mouthed at the screen until he realized that Dom hadn’t heard a thing and was still sobbing violently on his shoulder.
“Dom...Dommeh!”
He shook the younger man hard.
“Dom, it’s not a planecrash!”
Tears were streaming down Dominic’s face when he looked up. “Wha...?”
“It’s a bus, Dom...a bus and some cars. Not a planecrash.” Billy repeated, and finally, Dom’s face turned back to the screen where pictures taken by a helicam were showing.
“It’s not...?”
“No, Dommeh, it’s not.”
“Jesus...” Fresh tears formed in Dom’s eyes.
“Bills...I really thought I had lost her for a moment...” he whispered, not taking his eyes away from the TV.
“I know, Dom...I know.”
“I don’t think I could take it if...” The sentence was never finished.
Instead, Dom jumped up and all but ran over to the kitchen.
“Want a drink, Bills? I guess I need that right now...”
“Sure...” Billy was swallowing against a big lump in his throat when he muted the TV.
Dom got back and handed him a beer.
“Bills, if you don’t mind...I’d rather stay at home tonight...I dunno if there’s any chance she could call my cell from way over there and stuff...”
“Uhm...sure...”
Billy didn’t feel like staying at home at all, but when he looked into Dom’s pleading eyes, there was no way of saying anything else.
They sat still for a long time, Dom staring at the muted TV where the latest news about the accident kept repeating over and over again, Billy drowning in his own dark thoughts until he couldn’t take it any more.
“Mind if I go and take a nap, Dom? I still feel a little jetlagged and it’s been one hell of a short night for me...”
“Nah...just go ahead...” Dom waved into the direction of the guestroom and finished his beer.
“I’ll just stay here...she should be there anytime soon.”
“Sure...” Billy headed for the guestroom and softly shut the door behind him.
He curled up as tight as he could, pulled his blanket over his head and tried to shut out the world entirely, but still he heard Dom pacing to and fro in the livingroom.
It took him what felt like eternity until he finally slipped into a world between waking and sleeping, still hearing Dom’s steps but unable to react or feel in any way.
He knew this state by now, he had learned that he’d slowly fall asleep and would finally be able to forget for a few sacred hours – and right then, he was waiting, longing for this moment to arrive.
It never did.
Billy didn’t know how long he had been lying there when suddenly the door burst open.
“Bills?” Dom whispered a little too loud.
“Billy, are you awake?”
The Scot thought for a moment, that this must be the most annoying and senseless question in the entire universe, then considered pretending to be asleep.
Half a second later he knew that this wouldn’t help at all.
If just a little of old Dom was left, he’d just be sitting on Billy’s back within no time, shaking and tickeling him until he gave up and responded.
Knowing that nothing would save him for long, he just groaned and turned around, blinking from the light that was shining through the doorway.
“Wha is’t, Dommeh?” he mumbled, trying to get a better look at his friend who was nothing more than a silhouette against the golden shine of the livingroom lights.
“Bills...” Dom whispered again before he walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge, staring at his hands that were playing with a corner of Billy’s blanket.
“She hasn’t called yet...” he finally sniffled, “It’s been more than twelve hours now, she has to be there...”
Billy sat up and fought the urge to either roll his eyes until he’d be dizzy or just be sick right away.
Would Lena’s ghost never leave?
Instead of giving in to one need or the other, he gently ran a hand over Dom’s back before letting it rest on his shoulder.
“She has to get from the airport to her hotel after all...I don’t know about Spanish traffic...this might take some time.”
Dom shrugged Billy’s hand off.
“What if she has only taken the role to get away from me?” Billy saw traces of panic in Dom’s eyes when the younger man finally turned around to face him.
“Now you’re being ridiculous, Dom. You know she wouldn’t do this. None of us would.”
The last sentence had left his mouth before Billy had been able to think it over.
Gladly, it was dark outside and the artificial light from the living was hiding the fact that he was blushing heavily when Dom shot him an odd glance, obviously thinking Billy’s last words over.
Before Dom could come to a conclusion, the sound of Dom’s cell ringing broke the silence.
In an instant, Dom was up on his feet and running back to the livingroom to grab his mobile from the coffee table.
One look at the display and his smile faltered.
Softly, he pushed the button and ran a hand through his hair while answering.
“Hi there Elwood...”
“...”
“No, I haven’t heard a thing.”
“...”
“Yeah...I’ll call you as soon as she got through.”
“...”
”You’re welcome...talk to you later, alright?”
Dom hung up and just wanted to turn back to Billy when his cell rang again.
He glared at the display and suddenly his face lit up, almost enough to blind Billy again.
“Lena, Baby, you’re finally there!” Dom chirped into the receiver and happily waved a hand to where Billy was standing.
“So, how’s Spain?”
“...”
“Spanish. I see. Did you meet your castmates already?”
“...”
“Oh, yeah...so tomorrow it is?”
”...”
”Cool. So...good luck there!”
“...”
Dom’s smile left his face when he listened to whatever it was Lena had to say.
“Yeah, I understand. It’s been one hell of a long flight after all. Sleep well then...and take care. I love you.”
He hung up and slumped down on the sofa, his face buried in his hands.
“I don’t know what to do if she’s not here, Bills...I miss her so much...”
Billy sighed and walked over to where Dominic was sitting.
No matter how much he wished Lena wouldn’t be there, he just couldn’t stand seeing Dom that sad.
“Dommeh...” he whispered while he put an arm around the younger man’s shoulders, hoping Dom didn’t feel the tiny beat his heart skipped when he held the one he loved so close.
“She’ll be back...”
Dom glanced up, tears forming in his eyes. “Yeah...but it’s such a long time...”
“Find something to kill that time then.” Billy gathered all his strength and looked Dom square in the eye, hoping he’d get the hint.
Instead, Dom frowned for a second before his face lit up again.
“Know what? You’re right. And I know exactly how I’m gonna do it.”
He jumped up and disappeared into the kitchen, leaving a rather confused Scot behind.
A few seconds later, a bottle of beer landed in Billy’s lap.
“Tonight, we’ll get wasted. If everything works out, there won’t be time for that from tomorrow on.”
With that, Dom popped open first Billy’s bottle and then his own.
“Cheers, mate, I’m glad you’re here!”
Billy felt better than he had for months when they just sat there, drinking and talking all night.
From time to time, they’d roll around laughing only to turn dead-serious a second later.
It was just like in the old days and when Billy finally stumbled back into his room, sunrise wasn’t far off anymore.
He curled up into a ball and smiled into his pillow before he fell asleep, remembering that Lena hadn’t been mentioned again all night.
