Chapter Thirty-Seven

Dom already had a headache when they arrived at the airport. They were headed to New York and then on to L.A. for the premiere of Master and Commander: The Fortune of War. He sat in a chair while Billy got their tickets.

“Are you ok, Uncle Dom?” Lucas asked as he sat beside Dom. He swung his legs back and forth, banging them against the metal legs of the chair.

“Fine. Just a headache.”

Lucas nodded and continued to bang his legs.

“Luke, please!” Dom snapped. “Don’t do that.”

“Sorry,” Lucas muttered. He placed his head in his hand and sighed. “I’m bored.”

“Read a book,” Dom said as he reached into his bag for some aspirin. “Luke, do me a favor. Get me a bottle of water.” He pressed a five-pound note into Lucas’ hand.

“Sure!” Lucas ran off towards the nearest shop.

Dom sighed and leaned his head back. “This is going to be a long trip,” he muttered to himself. He knew Billy wouldn’t like him sending Lucas off alone, but he needed a break.

“What’s that?” Billy asked, appearing at Dom’s side. Michael was sleeping soundly in his arms.

“Just tired.”

“Still have a headache?” Billy asked as he sat beside Dom.

“Yeah, and your kid isn’t helping matters. Sent him to get some water, just to get him away.”

“Alone?” Billy asked, as he started looking around the airport.

“He’s fine. Just over there.” Dom pointed to a shop just steps away. “I needed a break from him.”

“What did he do?” Billy placed Michael on the seat next to him. The baby stirred slightly, but remained asleep.

“Made as much noise as possible.” Dom rubbed his forehead. “He was just adding to my headache.”

Lucas reappeared, a bottle of water in his hand. “Here, Uncle Dom.”

“Thanks, Luke,” Dom said, taking the water and the change. He quickly downed three aspirin.

“The lady wanted my autograph.” Lucas began bouncing up and down. “She said she cried during my movie.”

“A lot of people cried, Boo,” Billy said, smiling slightly. “Now sit down. We have a bit before we get to board.”

“Why are we here so early?” Lucas whined.

“Here, Luke,” Dom said, handing his change back. “Go get some candy.”

Lucas tore off back towards the shop.

“You want to give him sugar?” Billy asked as he lifted a now fully awake Michael into his lap. “He’ll be twice as loud as he is now.”

“Yes, but he’ll have something in his mouth.”

Billy chuckled. “Lij is meeting us in L.A.”

“Really? I miss that kid.”

“He’s hardly a kid anymore. He has a kid, Dommie.”

“I know, I know. Still miss him.” Dom reached over and ran his hand over Michael’s hair. Matt had returned to the States just five days after he’d arrived. He hoped to be back around Christmas, which was now just two weeks away. “You gonna stay quiet, pal?” he said to his nephew.

Michael squealed and clapped his hands together.

“Well?” Dom said with a chuckle.

“No!” Michael said, nodding his head.

Billy shrugged. “At least he’s honest.”

Lucas returned with four giant chocolate bars. “Thanks, Uncle Dom!”

“Anytime, Luke.”

“Now boarding, flight 1172 to New York City.”

“That’s us.” Billy stood up and handed Michael to Dom. “Come on, Boo. Grab your bag.”

Billy tried to ignore the stares he got as he settled Michael in his car seat beside the window. Billy would sit beside him with Luke on the aisle. They hadn’t been able to get four seats together on the first leg of their flight so Dom would sit in front of them.

“Dad, I want to sit with Uncle Dom,” Lucas whined.

“Not this time, Boo. He’s right in front of you, though. On our flight to L.A. you can sit next to him.” Billy helped Lucas buckle his seat belt.

Lucas sighed. He fidgeted in his seat for a few minutes before unbuckling his seatbelt.

“Leave that on, Boo. Until the captain says its ok. Here, read this.” Billy pulled a random magazine from the back of the seat in front of him as Lucas redid his seatbelt.

Lucas stared at the cover. “Maxim?”

“Or not.” Billy yanked the magazine back and buried it deep in the recesses of the small pocket in front of him. He pulled his carry-on into his lap and pulled out a worn copy of Lord of the Rings. “Here. Read that.”

Lucas took the book and grinned up at his dad. “Cool!” Billy had read the books to him years before, but Lucas had always wanted to read them himself.

Halfway into the flight a flight attendant came around to see if any of the children wanted to see the cockpit. Lucas had flown many times before, but this was the first time he hadn’t fallen asleep.

Dom, however, had. He was rudely woken by Lucas tugging at his sleeve. “What, Luke?” he asked, quite annoyed by the ten-year-old at this point.

“Come to the cockpit with me,” Lucas begged. He grabbed Dom’s hand. “Please?”

“No, Luke. I still have a headache.”

Billy undid his seatbelt and leaned over the top of Dom’s seat. “Boo, let him sleep, ok? Go on ahead.”

Lucas pouted for a moment before heading towards the front of the plane.

Billy looked down at Dom. “Aspirin didn’t work?”
“No. And now my throat hurts.”

Billy gazed down at Dom, wishing for a moment he could take him in his arms. They hadn’t told anyone outside of their friends of their relationship and an airplane didn’t seem like the place to come out. “Take some more aspirin. I’ll keep Luke out of your hair.”

Dom smiled slightly up at Billy. “Thanks, mate.”

Michael started fussing. It was about time for his lunch.

“Oh, great,” muttered the man beside Dom.

“Relax, pal. He’s just a baby. Wants his strained whatever is all,” Dom said as he took three more aspirin.

Billy stifled a laugh as he started feeding Michael some strained “whatever”. Dom wasn’t one to cross when he wasn’t feeling well.

Lucas reappeared a few moments later, a small pair of wings pinned to his shirt. He went right to Dom’s side and tugged on his sleeve again. “Uncle Dom.” Dom had fallen asleep again and didn’t wake up right away. “Uncle Dom!”

“Luke, leave him alone,” Billy said from his seat. “Come sit down.”

“But I want to show him my wings. Uncle Dom, wake up.”

Dom groaned slightly as he woke up. “What is it now, Luke?” he asked, no longer trying to hide his annoyance.

“Look!” He pointed at the wings.

“Good for you, Luke. Go sit please. I still don’t feel well.”

Lucas cocked his head to the side. “I’m sorry, Uncle Dom.”

Dom sighed. “It’s fine, Luke. I’m just really tired.”

Lucas nodded and went back to his seat. He looked over at Billy who was reading another copy of Lord of the Rings. “Dad? Is Uncle Dom ok?”

Billy put his book down. “He’s just not feeling well right now. Hopefully he’ll feel better when we get to L.A.”

Lucas got back up and walked over to Dom’s side. He tugged lightly on Dom’s sleeve again before crawling into Dom’s lap.

Dom opened his eyes and looked down at Lucas. “Hey, Luke,” he whispered before kissing the boy on the top of his head. “You tired, too?”

Lucas nodded. “Sorry I kept waking you up.”

Dom shrugged as he moved into a more comfortable position. With Lucas now in his lap, he inclined the seat back. “It’s fine, Luke. Really.” He pulled the boy closer, resting the blonde head on his chest. “Go to sleep.”

Lucas looked up, his green eyes meeting Dom’s blue-grey ones. “Are you mad at me?”

Dom looked down at Lucas in shock. “Why do you think I’m mad at you?”

“You haven’t called me ‘Little Scot’ all day,” Lucas whispered as he placed his head back on Dom’s chest.

“Oh. I’m not mad at you. Just...I don’t know. Guess I was just thinking, with my headache. Sorry, Little Scot. Now, go to sleep.”

Billy looked over at his son and boyfriend sound asleep in the chair and smiled. Michael cooed beside him. “Jealous?” Billy asked as he tickled Michael’s chin. “You’ll be back with your dad soon, kid.” He leaned back in his seat. “I hope.” Billy loved Michael but he longed for things to go back to just him, Lucas, and Dom.

Eh-heh. That's my time in the Mary-Sue/PPC fandom showing. See, much like 'teh', 'liek', and the ever-popular '!!11!one!', it's a joke. Poking fun at the over-use of Internet acronyms. Er, so really, it's not anything net-y, it's bar-b-qu. Or however you spell it. Point is, it's a joke, used when you're just so overwhelmed you can't think of any more good internet acronyms. *^-^*
