Chapter Three

Dominic smiled at Billy as he stood beside him at the airport. It had been their last day of shooting before a week-long break for Christmas. Most of the main cast had family flying down and they would celebrate Christmas together at Peter and Fran’s.

Billy wasn’t sure he wanted to go. His mind wandered as he waited for his sister and nephew to arrive. Most of the British cast members were with him as their families had ended up on the same flight.

“Hey, Bills. You ok?” Dominic asked as he leaned over to Billy.

Billy sighed. “I don’t know if I want to go to the Christmas party. I’m not a big fan of Christmas.”

“Why not?” Dominic whispered as he took Billy’s hand in his. “Because of your parents?”

Billy nodded as he lowered his head. “My father died a week before Christmas. Hell, seventeen years ago tomorrow.”

Dominic frowned. “Don’t worry, Bills. You don’t have to go.” He pulled Billy into a hug and kissed his forehead.

The other cast members threw them a glance, but didn’t comment. They knew of the relationship that had developed between Billy and Dominic and accepted it a lot better than either man thought they would.

There was a sudden shout of joy as a throng of people emerged through the terminal doors. The small crowd from the film moved forward and claimed their various family members.

“Dom!” called a light female voice.

Dominic turned and smiled. “Mum! Dad!” He turned back to Billy. “See you in bit, love,” he whispered before taking off to see his parents.

Billy smiled and shook his head. He looked toward the doors for the sight of his sister and nephew. The crowd thinned and before long no one was coming out the doors. The only people left were his fellow cast members. He became worried. The only family he had left was his sister and little nephew.

A small figure came skipping out of the door followed closely by a tall, smiling woman. Billy smiled. “Maggie!” he called.

Margaret looked over and smiled as she took her son’s hand. “There’s Uncle Billy,” she said.

“Uncle Billy!” called five-year-old Lucas. He let go of his mother’s hand and ran toward Billy.

“Hey, Boo-bear!” Billy exclaimed as he caught Lucas in his arms. “I missed you,” he whispered in the boy’s blonde hair.

“Missed you, too, Uncle Billy.”

Margaret appeared at his side. “Hello, Billy,” she said as she leaned in and kissed his cheek.

“Maggie.” Billy returned her kiss. “Long flight?”

“Terribly long with this guy,” Margaret said as she ruffled Lucas’ hair affectionately.

“Everyone have who they came for?” called Peter as he came towards the small group.

A chorus of yes’s came toward him.

“Right then. Good to hear. We’ll let you get a good night’s sleep. Rest up for the Christmas party tomorrow.”

Billy leaned over. “You want to go, Mags? I’m really not up to it, but if you want.”

“Not really, Billy. I’m as big a fan of Christmas as you are.”

Billy nodded and walked with his sister over to Peter. “I’m afraid we have to bow out on the party, Pete.”

Peter gave Billy a puzzled look. “Are you sure, Billy?”

Billy looked from his sister back to Peter. “Yeah, we’re sure. Thank you for inviting us.”

“We’re a family here, Billy. Remember that,” said Peter before heading off towards Bean and his family.

Dominic appeared at Billy’s side, his parents behind him. “Billy! Meet my parents. Mum, Dad, this is Billy.”

“Nice to meet you, Billy. Dom’s told us so much about you. I’m Aureen,” Dominic’s mother said as she held out her hand.

Billy put Lucas down and shook her hand. “Good to meet you, too.”

“So, you’re Billy,” Austin Monaghan said. He smiled at Billy. “Good to meet you, son.”

“Should I be scared? What exactly has Dom told you?”

“Nothing! I swear. Well, just that you’ve stolen my heart.”

Billy’s jaw dropped. Margaret stifled a giggle at his side while Lucas looked up, very confused. The cast members still milling around looked over and chuckled lightly before leaving with their families.

“You’ll have to forgive my rude brother. I’m Margaret and this is my son, Lucas.” Margaret smiled at the Monaghans. “Close your mouth, Bill.”

“Sorry, just a bit surprised.” Billy offered them a slight smile.

“Uncle Billy, it’s not nice to steal,” Lucas said as he tugged on Billy’s sleeve.

“Smart kid,” Dominic said as the group started to leave. “You’ll give us a ride back to my place, right Bills?”

“You could rent a car, you know,” Billy said as they approached his car.

“I could but it’s a lot more fun if you drive. Trust me. You don’t want me driving.”

Billy sighed. “Get in.”

“Is there room for all of us?” Margaret asked.

“Not legally. Boo-bear, you’ll have to sit on someone’s lap.” Billy looked into backseat, full of Monaghans.

“Yours!” Lucas exclaimed.

“That’s...very illegal. How about your mum? You’ll be next to me then.”

Lucas nodded as he and Margaret got into the car.

Billy drove as quickly as he dared to Dominic’s place. He didn’t want to risk a ticket.

After exiting the car, Dominic leaned over to talk to Billy. “I’ll see you three at the party tomorrow?”

“Sorry, but we’re going to stay home,” Billy said as Lucas climbed into the backseat where he could be safely buckled in. “You know,” he said with a shrug.

Dominic’s face fell. “Oh, well. I understand. I’ll call you then.”

Billy nodded as Dominic left to let his family inside. “Bye. Nice meeting you.”

As they drove towards Billy’s house, Margaret leaned over. “He seems like a wonderful guy, Billy. Maybe we should go to the party.”

Billy shook his head. “It’s tomorrow, Maggie. If it was any day but tomorrow.”

“I understand. It’s gotten easier for me. I have that guy,” she said motioning her head towards Lucas. “Christmas is such a happy time for him.”

“Used to be happy for us, too, if you remember.”

“Yeah, I remember,” Margaret whispered.

“Where’s that husband of yours? Too good to fly down and visit his best mate?” Billy asked as he turned onto his street.

Margaret laughed. “Jack said he’d come down the day after tomorrow.”

“Dad has a big case of wine or something,” Lucas said.

“He has a big case to win, Luke-darling,” Margaret said as she chuckled.

“I’m glad you married him, Maggie. I never liked that Greg. And he’s the best father you can ask for Lucas.” Billy turned into his driveway.

“You don’t need to tell me that.” Margaret helped Lucas out of the car. “So, tell me about this Dom of yours.”

Billy smiled softly and shrugged. “What can I say? He’s great.”

“I’m glad. I worry about you down here, you know.”

“Don’t worry, Mags. Everything is great.”

“Then lets go to the party. What can it hurt?”

Billy sighed as he closed the door. “Fine. We’ll go, but we won’t stay for long.”

Elijah looked around the ever-filling room. “Where’s Billy?” he shouted over the crowd.

“He told me yesterday he didn’t plan on coming,” Peter said.

“Aw. Why?” Elijah asked.

Orlando clamped his hand over Elijah’s mouth. “Remember what happened that last time you asked about Billy?”

Elijah nodded as the rest of the cast chuckled.

“Then shut up.”

Elijah rolled his eyes as he stuck out his tongue.

“Yuck!” exclaimed Orlando as he yanked his hand away. “He licked me!”

Dominic chuckled. “Good show, Lij.”

Peter rolled his eyes as the doorbell rang. He answered the door and was very surprised to see Billy, Margaret and Lucas standing before him. “Billy! You decided to come.”

Billy shrugged and pointed at Margaret. “Blame my sister.”

“Billy!” shrieked Dominic as he flew at Billy. He ran full force into the Scot, nearly knocking him to the ground. “You came!”

“Yes,” Billy said as he hugged Dominic. “I came.”

“Don’t kill my Uncle Billy!” Lucas said as he tried to wedge himself between Dominic and Billy.

“Ah, I wouldn’t kill him. Don’t worry.”

Billy actually enjoyed himself. The party took his mind off his father and the impending holiday. Dominic stuck to his side much of the party. During dinner, he’d slipped a hand onto Billy’s lap. Billy struggled in vain to keep from blushing.

Margaret chuckled and exchanged a look with Dominic’s parents. She was happy for her brother. He’d spent too much time worrying about her that he rarely paid attention to his own needs. She was glad he’d found someone to love.
