Chapter Eighteen
Billy entered the small pizzeria and quickly noticed Viggo and his fifteen-year-old son, Henry, sitting at a table.
“Hey, Billy! Luke!” Viggo called, waving his hand.
Lucas skipped over to Viggo. “Hi, Viggo! Hi, Henry!”
Henry reached over and ruffled Lucas’ hair. “Luke, how are you, man?”
“I’m great!”
Billy sat down across from Viggo. “Doesn’t he have school?”
Viggo shrugged. “Someone has to keep an eye on Luke while the two of us talk.” He handed Henry a handful of quarters. “Teach him how to play fooseball, ok, Henry? I’ll let you know when the pizzas ready.”
“Sure, Dad. Come on, Luke.” Henry got up from the table and took Luke over to the small area of various video games.
“So. Billy. Talk.”
Billy chuckled. “You’re not one to beat around the bush, are you?”
“No. Talk.”
Billy sighed. “I’ve filed papers to adopt Lucas.”
“That’s good news. So why the long face the past few days?” He looked over and noticed their pizza was done. “I mean,” he stood up, got the pizza, and sat back down, “you should be happy.”
Billy shrugged. “He isn’t mine until we find his father.”
Henry and Lucas came over and each grabbed a slice. Lucas was now wearing Henry’s baseball cap. He wore it backwards and a several strands of his blonde hair hung out of the opening. “Look what Henry gave me.”
“I see, Luke. Very nice. Go and play, ok?” Billy smiled as the two boys went back to their game. “I just...I don’t want to lose him, Vig.”
“You won’t lose him, Billy. Look, yes, they tend to side with a birth parent, but he hasn’t seen Lucas...”
“Ever. My sister called him the day he was born, but he didn’t want to see the baby so...” Billy shrugged. “I’m just scared.”
“It is hard to adopt a child, but you’ve got a lot going for you. You’re his uncle. You’ve been raising him for just over four years. And you’re famous.” Viggo leaned back in his chair.
Billy chuckled. “I do have that going for me.”
“So, you two going to do that movie with Clint Eastwood?”
“He really wants Luke. I don’t know why. He’s never acted, like speaking-wise. He’s been on stage with me a few times, but he never had any lines.”
“Luke is cute, has a great personality. He must’ve seen something in the kid that night.”
Billy looked over at his nephew. Henry was letting him win and he giggled with each goal he scored.
“Billy, look.” Viggo reached into his pocket as Billy turned back to him. “Here. Call him. He’s an expert in all kinds of custody law.” He handed Billy a card.
“I already have a lawyer. Two actually. Dom’s got me in contact with this guy and I have my own.”
“Take it anyways. The more help you have, the better.”
Billy took the card and jammed it in his pocket. “Thanks, Vig.”
“If you ever want to talk, you know you can call me. Call any of us. You have...twenty-odd people there for you.”
Billy laughed. “Yes. Too bad none of you are around when Dom and I want a night alone.”
Viggo smiled. “How are things with you two, anyways?”
Billy shrugged. “As good as one can expect, being as far apart as we are. I know Luke misses him.”
“And you?”
Billy sighed. “It’s like there’s this hole in my life. And that’s where Dom goes. It get’s filled temporarily. Like...like a pothole, you know. You fill it up every time, but it appears again.” Billy shook his head. “That made no sense, did it? I just made Dom sound like a winter terror, comparing him to a pothole.”
“It made sense. It a strange...Scottish way.”
Billy started to tell Viggo off when Lucas and Henry reappeared.
“Back so soon?” Viggo asked as Henry sat next to him.
Henry smiled. “He’s good. He beat me every time.”
“You let me.” Lucas picked at the cheese on the pizza.
“Not that last time. That last time, you really did win.”
“Really?” Lucas eyes widened and brightened. “I really won?”
“Yup.”
Lucas grinned. “Did you hear? I won!”
“I heard, Boo.” Billy pulled Lucas into his lap. “Like your pizza?”
“Not as good as that one in Mexico. But it’s good.”
Between the four of them, they managed to eat a whole pizza and half of another. Viggo gave Billy the box with the other half. “I know Dom will eat it. He gets in this depressive state whenever you leave. Or when he comes back from visiting you.”
Billy took the box. “Like I like leaving. Or when he leaves.” He sighed and shook his head. “We need those things. Like on Star Trek. What do you call ‘em?”
“Teleporters?” Henry offered.
“Yes. We need those. Then, it wouldn’t matter.”
Viggo chuckled. “Ah, to be in love. Don’t be such a stranger, Bill.” He pulled Billy into a tight embrace. “Remember what I told you.” He pulled away and turned to Lucas. “You listen to your uncle, dad, whatever you wish to call him. Especially if you do this movie, ok?”
Lucas nodded. “I’ll listen. Bye, Viggo. Bye, Henry.”
The four exchanged hugs before separating. Lucas and Billy headed toward where Billy had parked his rental car.
“Are we going back to Uncle Dom’s?” Lucas asked as he climbed into the car.
“Yeah, Boo. Why? Did you want to go somewhere else?”
Lucas shook his head. “I like Uncle Dom.”
Billy chuckled. “I know you do. So do I.” He climbed into the car and started back toward Dom’s apartment.
Lucas skipped into the apartment. “Uncle Dom, I played a game with Henry and he let me win, but that’s ok and he gave me this hat and...”
Dom chuckled and pulled Lucas into his arms. “Sounds like fun, Little Scot.” He looked over at Billy. “So, tonight?”
“Wait, Dommie.” He reached out and squeezed Dom’s knee. “You’ll see.”
