A little taste: The words rung in Dominic’s ears, but he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Sitting on the side of the bed with the cordless phone in his hand he was intending to use to call an ambulance for Billy’s bleeding back...

Sean Astin ambled slowly toward Elijah’s trailer in the striking dark in the middle of the night. It was 12:43 and he knew it was a bad time, but probably the only time he had. He had been steadily thinking of Elijah’s face when he realized what was going on between Billy and Dom had become more than speculation. He didn’t like what he had seen.

The past few weeks he hadn’t managed to detect any real change in Elijah. He was a bit more edgy and a bit strange, but it wasn’t until the scene in the restaurant today that he had decided it was time to talk to Elijah alone and confirm that he wasn’t planning on doing anything to Dom or Billy, just to settle his nerves so he could sleep tonight.

"Elijah, you in there?" Sean asked as he knocked for the third time on the trailer door. He tried the knob, and it twisted in his hand allowing him to enter. He didn’t see Elijah anywhere or get a response when he called out again. Then something caught his eye.

On the floor by the door was a small piece of glass. Sean crouched to pick it up. As he looked a bit harder he noticed more glass scattered about the floor and as he approached the middle of the room, he saw the two broken glasses by the couch. Then he turned on the light and saw drops of blood all over the floor. Some was smeared over were the glass was. More of it dripped out towards the door. Some was in the bedroom.

Sean paced the room searching for clues as to whom to be concerned about. Whose blood is this? That was when he saw the red pajamas with blood running down the arm lying on the floor. Elijah was bleeding.

Sean was about to leave the room when he saw the empty box with extra bullets in it lying on the floor. Elijah was bleeding and a gun was missing. With several real reasons to worry Sean almost ran toward the door when he saw a familiar coat draped over the edge of the couch. It wasn’t Elijah’s. It was Billy’s.

More ideas began to fall into place as Sean bolted out of the trailer. There was enough glass on the floor for two broken glasses. Billy’s coat was there, which meant he left in a hurry. There was blood everywhere. And a gun was missing. He didn’t like the looks of this and he cursed Peter Jackson’s fucking candy while he huffed and puffed sprinting to Billy’s trailer.

"You forgot your coat. That, and the bullet going to the back of your throat." The words rung in Dominic’s ears, but he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Sitting on the side of the bed with the cordless phone in his hand he was intending to use to call an ambulance for Billy’s bleeding back, he had paused over the buttons staring at the dark figure of Elijah standing in his trailer.

Elijah had a gun. He was clearly planning to use it. The threat still hung harsh in the air. The word "bullet" can be a terrifying thing if it came from the mouth of a person holding a gun pointed at the reason you lived your pathetic little life. Then the gun was pointed at him.

"Put the phone down, and sit on the bed. I want you two close together and far enough away so the blood doesn’t spatter my clothes." Dominic put the cordless on the bedside table and sat to join Billy leaning against the headboard. Billy was sitting up and still bleeding profusely. Dom’s heart jumped with worry. If we don’t get him to a hospital soon, Elijah won’t need to shoot him.

Billy gazed at Elijah with hazy eyes. Those eyes weren’t working so well now, but he could see Elijah very clearly. He had changed from his blood-red pajamas into jeans and a button-down, black shirt. It was funny how he hadn’t had the time to take care of his wounds, but he did change his clothes. His right hand was dripping crimson liquid and the color was only accented deeper by the glass shards stuck to it. Seemed like the wine glass claimed more than one victim this night. The blood ran over the handle and trigger of the gun to accent the seriousness of Elijah’s words. But the most striking thing about what was before Billy right now was Elijah’s face.

The pale cheeks were flushed a bit with running and with the salt of Elijah’s tears raking over them in small rivers. Right where Billy vaguely remembered hitting him above the right eye, there was another wound. Billy’s ring must’ve cut the eyebrow where it had met it because the cut was bleeding, and the tears that coursed down Elijah’s face were tinged red.

Despite Elijah’s tears, his facial expression was unmoving and stone cold as he held the gun steadily. "I offered you everything and you gave me nothing." Elijah said. The voice was hurt and almost child-like. Utter betrayal.

Dominic sat on the edge of his seat straining and memorizing every word out of Elijah’s mouth which may be giving him the clue as to when he should throw himself in front of Billy to take the bullet’s impact. He was prepared to do it if necessary. But it was difficult not to be hypnotized by Elijah’s voice. Somewhat like the stare a snake gives you before they bite. The words became immensely important.

"I threw myself at your mercy, and all you did was stomp me to death. You are incapable of love. You are a pathetic excuse for a human being and I loved you. I guess all I can do is kill you so you know how you’ve made me feel. And then I think I’ll despatch Dominic fucking Monaghan as well, since you two are so desperate to be together. I’ll save him the goddamn trouble of committing suicide. You two may want to be together forever, but I can’t deal with that. I can’t have that flaunted in front of me every day, at least, not on this Earth." Elijah paused only to give the most disturbing smile he could manage. "You’ll have to settle for a different plane. But don’t worry. You won’t be separated for long. I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time wherever I send you."

Dominic, worried that this was the ultimate cue, spoke up. "‘Lij, please."

Elijah spun his head to Dominic and spat the words, "Fuck you, Dommie! You are the reason I’m doing this. Don’t you let yourself off easily! You fucked my world. YOU ended our lives."

"That may be true, Elijah, but please, don’t do this. We can talk about this. We can come to some sort of arrangement – "

"What kind of an arrangement is going to give me what I want?"

"Elijah, please." Dominic pleaded with is eyes, since we was afraid if he moved he’d be shot. "Elijah you’re drunk and angry. I can see that. But this isn’t the way that it has to be. We care too much about you, ‘Lijah, to see you so torn up. Please talk to us. Maybe you’ll feel better."

Elijah cocked the gun in response, and Billy looked up.

"Hey, remember that time we all went surfing together, and the board popped up out of the water and hit ‘Lando in the mouth and we all laughed because he didn’t even have a bloody lip and he was so worried the tooth was loose. And then Dom said, ‘Why are you so worried, ‘Land? Afraid the girls won’t love you if you lose your baby teeth and find maturity?’ And then Orli said that it wouldn’t matter if Dom lost all of his teeth because he couldn’t get any less attractive."

Billy was rambling on about nothing, Dom thought. But then Dom stole a glance at Elijah and noticed his iron reserve was cracking. Billy rambled on.

"And then there was the time when you, ‘Lij, were on that one set with all the rocks and you fell between the cracks of one of them when we were joking around and scraped your ankle. We were all so worried you’d broken it..."

Elijah’s face faltered for a split second and Dominic caught it. The gun lowered a few fractions of an inch, but Billy was somehow winning Elijah over and Dom was not going to interfere if he could help it.

"...we iced it by holding snow to it with our bare hands. We didn’t even care our hands were numbing themselves blue. But in the end it was just slightly twisted and we laughed about how we were all just a bunch of worried hens, seeing everyone else in our minute cast as our chicks."

Elijah’s mouth corner twitched into a very small smile, but the gun didn’t lower any more. He was deep in thought.

"We kept getting hurt. Something always managed to poke through our prosthetics into our actual skin and hurt us. For some it was glass like you, ‘Lij, and Sean. Although you didn’t realize till much later your feet were so frozen. For others, it was a tiny splinter." Billy rolled his head to the side to look at Dom with laughing eyes. "That we noticed immediately."

Dom spoke now, seeing where all of this was going. "Sometimes the pain would be slow to realize. Other times it was just too much to bear so soon. But through it all we ended up taking care of each other and trusting each other and laughing in the end."

At that moment Elijah looked at Dom. His eyes spoke the words he couldn’t say. He wanted them to talk him out of this. He wanted to put the gun down. He wanted to trust them. All they had to do was say the right things and it would all be over.

"We were always there for each other. No matter how bad things got, we found some way to make it that much better. We kept each other going. We will continue to keep each other going. Elijah," Dom made eye contact with Elijah and saw his window of opportunity, "we need you to stick with us. We need you to trust us that we will help you, and that everything was going to be okay. Please. We care too much for you to be in so much pain. Let us help."

Dom slowly rose off the mattress and stood four feet from the end of the gun. If he was going to ask Elijah to trust him, he’d have to show Elijah that Dom trusted him already. He moved slowly, searching Elijah’s face for a sign that he wasn’t ready to put the gun down yet. Dom slowly began to close the gap. He only severed his eye-contact with Elijah when he heard the door bang open.

"ELIJAH! NO!" Sean burst into the room and ran right at Elijah who was too confused to move. Sean connected with Elijah hard and knocked the wind out of him. With an "oof" and wide eyes Elijah hit the ground, and the gun that was pointed at Dominic went off with a loud bang.

I've been loving this series. Every time, I literally squeak out loud when the suspence overwhelms me. Really love this.
