Lay me Down to Sleep
Part 3

The sea and the sun. His nephew playing on the sand. Dom sat on a picnic table staring at the sea. Lovely. It’d been years since he’d seen summer. The waves lapped gently. Low tide. The waves retreated. Further and further out. Out pretty far and pretty fast. Pretty. Nice lulling sound. The waves. Out so far. So fast. Rocks that had never been dry before were poking their heads out of the surf.

Oh.

Oh fuck.

He had to get his nephew. His sister-in-law would kill him if…

“Evan! Take my hand!”

The boy turned around to look at him but it wasn’t Evan. It was Billy and there was terror on his face.

“Run!”

The water was so far away. Tall now. Frothing. Tall. Overwhelming. Speeding.

“Run!”

Gravity didn’t know Dom’s legs. He sprinted with ease, pulling the boy along with him with no more effort than flying a kite. The water hit them. But Dom was on a hill. It was okay. His brother and sister-in-law would be so happy.

“Evan! Well done!”

Dom turned to look down at his nephew. Saw he was clutching seaweed in his hand. The water churned around his ankles, and pulled with an angry sucking sound back to the sea.

“Evan!”

Dom woke to the sound of Billy’s cries.

“I don’t need help! Leave me be, you fucking…” There was a great splashing of water.

Dom lurched to the bathroom and vomited.

“Oh god, I’ve lost him.”

“Dom? You okay? Who’d you lose?”

“Evan! My nephew. He’s drowned. The wave.”

Billy stepped from the shower and Viggo dropped the back scrubber he’d been using to torment Billy.

“It was just a dream, Dom. You didn’t lose him.”

Dom sat with his head on the toilet bowl and let that sink in. He didn’t lose Evan in a tidal wave. No, he didn’t. He didn’t grab plants instead of Evan.

“Oh God!”

He sobbed into the toilet bowl. Billy came and put his arms around him, dripped on him.

“Shush now. It’s okay. You didn’t lose him. It’s okay.”

“It’s not. I did lose him. Just not in that way.”

Billy went still. He put a kiss in Dom’s hair and then turned to Viggo.

“Get it out of him right now. He can’t bear it. Get it out.”

Dom heard Viggo’s footsteps hurrying from the room.

Elijah came back and all the fires were put out. Dom sat in the dark and let the tears and snot drip down his face. He should leave it. He should leave the RNM in place. He deserved to dream about Evan. Elijah began to sing, or chant, or mixture of those two things, or something beyond them. Dom’s head spun and his ears popped. The darkness overwhelmed him. It dragged at him. He was going down. He didn’t care.

“Not down there, Uncle Dom. Go up!”

Evan swam out of the darkness, blowing bubbles from his mouth and holding a red balloon.

“Up and up! Weee!”

Evan twirled away on his red balloon.

Dom smiled and reached out a hand to follow.

Get back here, right now.

“Please let me go,” Dom pleaded.

“No. Fuck. He’s seizing. Get the shot! Get it! It’s okay, Dom-lad. It’s okay.”

~*~

“I miss summer.”

“Hello. You’ve had a long sleep.”

“I want to go swimming.”

“There’s a blizzard.”

“I took Evan for a whale watch before they disappeared. I miss the whales.”

“They say some still exist, a long way from here. A sailor saw a blue whale diving into the sea.”

Dom opened his eyes.

“It’s gone then? The RNM?”

“It’s gone. It was a nasty one.” Billy squeezed Dom’s hand. “You were very brave.”

Dom turned his head away. His pillow was wet.

“If you ever want to talk about…I’d listen…I wouldn’t…It just seems…Hell. Evan was lucky to have someone who loved him so much.”

Dom stared out the dark window. He knew the RNM was gone and the insomnia was back. He knew his nightmare wasn’t over.

Aww. Poor Dom. *clutches*

I love how prolific you're being with this story. ;)

Well, I'm all about the angst and drama, and I'm not really big on kids, so it doesn't bother me too much. However, the part with poor kitty was sad. :(

I almost want to wait until it's finished so I can read it all at once but then I'm always too curious to see what additional piece you're going to add next. :-) This still has me so intrigued.

Thank you. I may not give it a miss but I'll probably wait a couple of days until my mood has improved a bit. Thanks for the heads up and letting me have a chance to read it.
