a/n: You'd think fireworks would be a happy thing, but I sat here listening to them shooting off outside my window and thought of this bit. Go figure. *shakes head* This is a blend of sadness and sweetness, though, I hope, and not just entirely depressing. : ) I'll be getting back to Detective!Billy directly, but this just refused to leave me alone.

Dom stood gazing up in wonder at the sky- the explosion of colours dotting the horizon, the bold concussions of sound reverberating back through the night air. Each July fourth, for more years than Dom could count, he and Billy had ventured out to watch the fireworks, celebrating along with the nation.

He reached down and gently rubbed Billy's back, trying to pretend away the sharp, angular feeling of the bones beneath his hand, the fragility of the once strong, vital body. This would be their last celebration; Dom knew it in his soul.

This place- America - would never truly be home for either of them, though they had both spent much of their lives here, in one spot or another. But Dom insisted on attending this annual festival with its thrilling display of pyrotechnics- not because he had any great need to cheer for America's independence, but because it reminded him of another time, another moment, the most treasured of his life.

So very long ago and yet only yesterday.

"D' you remember, Bills?", he murmured out of the blue, not bothering to elaborate. There had never been a need for explanation between them; they had always known each others' thoughts before they were spoken, even before they were formed.

"'course I remember, y' daftie. I've not gone completely around th' bend just yet." Billy's voice had lost some of its strength and gained a fragile temerity, but the Scottish lilt remained thick and beautiful.

"That's the moment I fell in love with you, y' know." Dom fought to keep the tears from sounding in his voice, though he knew Billy would sense them anyhow. "The moment that bloody rocket shot off into the air. You screamed like a girl, and I lost my heart."

"'twas a wee exclamation, at best- nothing even close t' a scream!", Billy retorted indignantly. Then his tone softened. "And I'd like t' know what took y' so sodding long, eh? Lost my heart th' first time I saw you."

Dom ran a hand through his hair, now liberally flecked with grey, then carefully, lovingly adjusted the blanket lying across Billy's lap. The summer night was sweltering, but Billy got chilled so easily these days. Dom was not willing to risk a cold or germ; he would fight for every precious second left to them.

"Watch your hip, now, Dominic.", Billy said dryly, casting a wary glance in the direction of Dom's fidgeting. "Remember last year."

Age had done nothing to temper Dom's enthusiasm... nor his occasional stunning bouts of awkwardness. He had been oohing and aahing at the light show, lost in excitement and his own habit of perpetual motion, and had bunged directly into the side of Billy's wheelchair, his shorts catching on the control toggle. Billy could be stubborn, and had refused to let Dom get him a new chair, claiming the old one had just begun to get comfortable, though the padding was worn to a frazzle and the brakes had given way completely. Billy was off like a shot, halfway down the steep hill before Dom had finally managed to reach him.

"Yeah, well..." Dom smiled at the memory. "I caught you, though, now dinnit I?"

"You always have, m'Dommie.", Billy replied softly, reaching out to entwine their fingers.

Dom lifted Billy's frail, trembling hand and kissed it, then bent down for a proper kiss, grinning against Billy's lips. "Come t' think of it, you screamed like a girl then, too, Bills." He nuzzled Billy's cheek. "And come t' think of it...I fell in love all over again."

Dom spent the rest of the evening kneeling by Billy's side, re-memorizing his husband's face, the fireworks forgotten. The wrinkles were more pronounced, the always pale skin tinged now with an unhealthy, heartbreaking shade of grey... but Billy's eyes still danced with impish green fire, far more brilliant than anything taking place in the sky above.

*blinks in awe*, or is that shedding tears? You rock, as always.

This is lovely and heartbreaking and very well done. Thank you for sharing it, even if it is squeezing my heart so tightly that I don't feel as though I can breathe!

Wah. Heartbreaking and wonderful.
The small details are amazing in this, the gray in Dom's hair especially got me, for some reason.
Thanks for writing this.

Oh now that just reached right in and gave me a good squeeze. Very sweet and very very tender look at their elder years.

that's the bit that really got me.

Beautiful and moving. I love the idea of them being old together.
