this is easily my most favorite charlie/shark story i've ever read. and how lame am i, but i only just twigged to the fact that your updates to this story only happen on saturday. bummer. i'm really enjoying the subtle details about Rory that you're sharing with us, a little at a time. the Shark is such a complex character and you've got a handle on him that just fits like a glove.
Thank you for your kind words - I'm glad you're picking up on the subtleties. Obviously with a character like the Shark you have to do a lot of extrapolation from what are barely more than glimpses (he's only on screen for 6 minutes) but it's been fun to do. Sorry about the weekly updates, but I'm a very slow writer, so if I post more frequently there'll be a long, long gap there once I run out.
the fact that the Shark is only on screen for a short time, but has had the type of impact that he has, makes him such an interesting character. i love the little stutter that Billy gives him. (i've always wondered if that was his idea or the director) he's such a potentially dangerous person, yet he has this very noticeable flaw.
i've been intrigued by the fact that he's allowed Charlie to stay the nite. that seems almost like a weakness on the Shark's part, because he's very vulnerable while asleep. i can't imagine him slipping and letting many people that close to him, unguarded. even if Charlie isn't armed, there's still the possibility for him to harm Rory while he's defenseless. i've also wondered if there will be a change in their "relationship" once they kiss. so far they haven't shared that intimacy and i can't help but think Rory's possessiveness is going to reach new heights once they have. yummy!
do you know how many chapters this is going to be? i understand about the once a week posting, i'm just a greedy h0r when it comes to a story i really like, just ask sassywitch or dylan.
Re UGS - yes, I love the touches of vulnerability that Billy gives the Shark - the stutter, the cold, the note of panic in his voice when Lizzie threatens to throw herself off the balcony - juxtaposed against the real menace in his voice as he stands close to Lizzie's Mum... such a brilliantly faceted portrayal, and in so few lines. He's an amazing actor.
Rory reads people quite well (he has to, in his job), and he's picked up the fact that while Charlie has a hot temper, he's not the sort of person to attack someone in their sleep... which Chris also realises and uses later on in the story.
Re the kissing - it's a Very Big Deal, which is why it's not going to happen for a long, long time yet. And Rory's possessiveness has a big impact on the way their relationship develops, especially after DriveShaft becomes famous.
Chapters... When I started this, back in October 2005, it was plotted as 6 chapters. Now I think it's going to be 15-18 but, oddly enough, they're mapping fairly well as three-chapter blocks against the original outline. I'm writing 12-14 at the moment (I cannot write sequentially, I'm afraid), and the epilogue is pretty much done as well, though it'll get a thorough revision before it gets posted, since little things change during the writing process.
I'm also writing lots of crossovers100 ficlets as well, which range from 150 - 2000 words. Some of those are Rory's POV for scenes in DDD, others are set after DDD, extending the story to 2028. I can't post any of those until DDD is finished - though if I get really stuck and run out of chapters I may post a couple of C100 bits that don't have any spoilers in them.
which Chris also realizes and uses later on in the story.
wow, i could think of a few ways that could go. is Chris the loyal employee he seems to be? love how the plot thickens.
i really can't wait to learn more about Rory and what makes him tick. you're right, in the movie he was trying to scare the shit out of the mom by threatening to throw the girl off the balcony. he seemed shocked to the core when she threatened to jump. sort of how he had Liam pegged when he first semi threatened to use him for sex. he knew it would freak Liam out, and what better way to make people do what you want them to, then by pushing their buttons. he seemed pretty shocked the Charlie offered, i don't think he saw that one coming.
as for this part: Some of those are Rory's POV for scenes in DDD, others are set after DDD, extending the story to 2028.
jebus on a pogo stick!!! i'm not sure what excites me more, the story from Rory's pov, or the fact that the story could go to 2028! wooty woot woo! were you planning on sending Charlie to flight 815, or is this a completely different AU? (since we found out the exact date the plane crashed on the season finale)
and yeah, i can see how the kissing would be very important. it's such an intimate exchange between two people. sex itself can be mechanical, but kissing is giving (and receiving) a part of the soul. when it finally happens for them it going to be spectacular.
There are only going to be two or three glimpses of Rory's POV during DDD, so don't get your hopes up too much.
No, in my story Charlie is not going to go to Australia in 2004, so he won't be on Flight 815. Among other reasons, by the time my Charlie gets to 2004 he's not really the Charlie who we saw in the early episodes. That Charlie had nothing to fall back on besides the band, whereas my Charlie will have gone through that stage already and be coming out on the other side. I knew from the start that it would be AU for Lost, so I didn't feel that I had to map Charlie's development so closely to the Lost timeline.
I'm glad you're picking up some of the little twists - but don't worry, there are plenty more!
