“Billy? What’s my name mean?”
Dom was sprawled across the carpet, fingers tapping a rhythm on his ribcage. Sunlight played softly across his features, teasing a smile from the corners of his mouth. He asked the question quietly, eyes never leaving the ceiling.
Shifting on the couch, Billy sighed, and looked down to where his legs were tangled with Dom’s. The afternoon’s carefree mood had shifted, he could tell, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to let it go that easy. Leaning back and closing his eyes, he replied with a smirk.
“Dominic. Latin-based. Translation: royal pain in my arse.”
With a small frown, his lover wrested free a foot from the cage of Billy’s knees, and brought it down with considerable force into his shin. Billy jumped, letting loose with a string of harsh curses.
“Dom!”
A petulant look, and Billy halted in his admonishment, and sighed once more, drawn out and long suffering. He popped his knuckles idly, and caught Dom’s foot between his legs once more.
Dominic shifted impatiently on the plush carpet, and met green eyes in an intense stare. “I’m serious, Bill. I know you know. You always know that kind of shite. What does it mean?”
It shifted again, and for some reason, Billy shivered in the wake of the sudden calm. There was something in Dom’s eyes, that betrayed him, and he didn’t know why, but it all seemed very important in this moment.
“It means,” he said, in a hushed voice, “…of God.”
Dom closed his eyes, and let out a shaky breath. “And yours, Bill? What does William mean?”
A smile, and Billy rested a careful hand on Dom’s ankle. “’Resolute protector.’”
There was nothing but silence, for a moment or two, and then a voice thick with sorrow. “It suits you.”
The sun had passed behind a cloud, now, and the room grew dimmer, but no enough so to hide the sudden tears leaking from behind Dom’s eyelids. Billy sat up, untangling them, and then crawled down to the floor beside the blonde, pulling him into a strong embrace.
“Well, of course it does. It would have to, for me to be entrusted with something sacred, Dommie. Something of God.”
The words faded to soft hushes, and they lay entwined together late into the night, in comfort and in love; and when the sun rises, soft light shining through the window, Billy could swear Dom glowed.
