Summary: Billy reflects on this relationship with Dom, and makes some unexpected discoveries.
Feedback: Would be greatly appreciated as it’s my drug of choice. As always, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] frojane for the beta.
Disclaimer: Not at all true in reality. This is my imagination at work.
A/N: This is a quieter, calmer piece that took on a life of its own. It’s not what I originally planned, but the Muse insisted, and I like how it worked out.
A/N 2: Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rawiyaparand for the unexpected gift of a paid account. Thank you, hon.

Billy has no idea how Dom always seems to know when he’s had a bad day, but his lover is eerily accurate with his timing of care packages, naughty messages via email, and phone calls from Hawaii. Then again, there have been countless occasions where Billy himself has been overcome with the urge to call his boyfriend at odd hours, only to discover that Dom’s allergies are making him particularly miserable that day, or that he’s gotten a bad sunburn while out filming on the beach.

Despite the long periods of time apart throughout their years as a couple, the close bond they forged in New Zealand has managed to endure, and even grow stronger. When they are together, every minute is so very precious, the time always moving too quickly. Painful goodbyes are eased with long, tender kisses and lingering hugs, as well as the knowledge that they will be together again, as soon as possible.

Pressing the flashing red button on his answering machine, Billy leans against the wall in the kitchen and listens as Dom’s message flows over his skin, the aural comfort soothing away the tension of the stressful day. Reaching into the drawer beneath the answering machine, Billy pulls out a new audio tape and unwraps the clear plastic covering it, already sure that he’ll be saving this message, like dozens of others.

“If leaves were kisses, I'd send you a forest of trees.
If water was hugs, I'd send you the largest sea.
If love is forever, we'll have all of eternity.
And when you need a friend, you'll always have me.”

“Oh, Dommie,” Billy murmurs tenderly, sighing to himself as he lays a small hand over his heart, touched by his lover’s words.

“I love you, Bills,” Dom adds, not even trying to hide the longing in his voice. “Miss you. Call me, yeah?”

“I miss you, too, love,” Billy whispers. “So much.”

Billy is curling into the pillow on Dom’s side of the mattress, dreading the moment when the alarm clock will ring and shatter the peaceful quiet, forcing him out of bed. Dreams are his sanctuary from reality, and on the days that he’s missing Dom more than usual, he clings very tightly to them. This morning is different, as the moment doesn’t come, only because the phone rings first and wakes him just three minutes before his alarm is scheduled to go off.

Billy’s reaction to the sound is to curse fluently in Gaelic as he makes a sleepy grab for the cordless handset sitting on his nightstand. He hadn’t bothered to put the phone back on the charger after calling Dom in Hawaii last night. Despite several attempts, he’d been denied the opportunity to speak to Dom directly and had instead been forced to leave a message on Dom’s mobile.

“Hello?” he grumbles, rolling onto his back and scratching absently at his chest.

Through his sleep-fogged brain, only a handful of words manage to sink in at first, but they turn out to be important ones, and Billy gives his head a shake to wake himself fully.

“Did you just say appendicitis?” Billy says as he sits up in bed and swings his legs out from under the warm coverlet.

He feels bad, truly he does, upon hearing the news that the director of the play that he’s been rehearsing for has suddenly taken ill. There is a genuine sigh of relief when Billy hears that the father of three is going to be just fine, and then his face lights up in an ecstatic smile when he’s told that rehearsals have been suspended for the next ten days. Before he hangs up the phone, Billy knows exactly what he’s going to do with the unexpected time off. There’s only one place he wants to be.

Tossing some t-shirts, along with his shaving kit and a toothbrush into his suitcase, Billy hangs up with the airline after reserving a seat on the next flight to America. There is an overwhelming urge to call Dom and tell him the good news, to boost his spirits, but Billy decides that a surprise arrival will be better. He can tell that Dom’s missing him a great deal, and it’s been nearly two months since they were last together.

Billy can hardly wait to watch Dom’s eyes light up when they’re reunited and he can hold his beloved Dommie again.

Stepping out of the airport terminal and into the warm sunlight of the beautiful, Hawaiian afternoon, Billy stretches his arms above his head to loosen the stiff muscles in his back. Reaching into the front pocket of his trousers for his mobile, Billy quickly dials the number for Evey’s cell phone, hoping that she won’t be standing next to Dom and will be able to tell him where they’re filming today. While Billy’s gotten to be friends with most of the ‘LOST’ cast, he’s gotten to know Evey the best, and knows what a great friend she’s been to Dom. Billy’s sure that she’d love to help him surprise Dom.

“Evey?” he says warmly when a female voice chirps a greeting in his ear. “I need a favor. If Dom’s around, don’t let him know that you’re talking to me.”

“Billy,” Evey replies, her voice filled with surprise. “Um, hi. Why are-”

“Where are you filming today?” Billy interrupts quickly, eager to have Dom in his arms. “I just landed at the airport. I want to come surprise Dom.”

“He’s not here, Billy,” Evey says, her words having the same effect as if a bucket of icy water had been dumped on Billy’s head.

“What?” Billy cries. “Where did he go? When did he leave?”

“No, he’s here, in Hawaii, Billy,” Evey explains quickly. “They sent him home about an hour ago, because he’s sick.”

“Sick?” Billy repeats. “With what? Are his allergies acting up again?”

“No, it was some kind of stomach bug,” Evey says, switching her mobile to the other ear. “He’s was really queasy and lightheaded all morning. He slept for a while at lunch, but he wasn’t any better, so they decided to move his scenes to tomorrow.”

“He’s at home,” Billy says, not realizing that he’s spoken aloud. “All alone.”

“But not for long,” Evey interjects softly, the smile in her tone unmistakable. “You’ll be there soon, to take care of him.”

“Thanks, Evey.”

“You’re welcome. Bye.”

Quickly ending the call, Billy steps to the curb and hails a cab to take him to Dom’s cozy beach house. It would seem that his spontaneous trip to Hawaii is very well timed, much like Dom’s messages have been in the past. Hopefully, Billy’s presence will be just what the doctor ordered.

The taxi ride to Dom’s seems never ending to Billy, even though the traffic is light and signal lights seem to be rotating in his favor. At last, the taxi pulls to a stop at the curb and Billy quickly hands over some cash, thankful that he’s finally here. Once he’s standing at the front door, Billy is suddenly thankful that Dom had given him the spare key, so that he doesn’t have to ring the bell and disturb Dom, especially since he’s sick. Billy is secretly hoping that Dom is resting, getting some escape from whatever is ailing him.

Opening and closing the door behind him almost silently, Billy is surprised at the quiet inside the house. The patio doors are shut tight, the gauzy curtains in the living room drawn, and ceiling fan above is turning in a lazy circle. Leaving his suitcase sitting in the foyer, Billy heels off his shoes and walks softly down the hall to Dom’s bedroom.

At the doorway, Billy pauses, drinking in the intimate, vulnerable sight before him. Dom, indeed, must not be feeling well, as he’s curled up into tight ball in his large bed, like a little boy, his long arms wrapped around what is usually Billy’s pillow, as though his Scottish boyfriend is laying there beside him, offering comfort. That alone isn’t what convinces Billy as to how poorly Dom is feeling, because for as long as they’ve been lovers, Dom has almost always slept in nothing but his skin. This afternoon, however, Dom is wearing a t-shirt, that has twisted up around his waist, along with the sheet covering his lower half, revealing several inches of tantalizing, golden skin.

Stepping towards the bed and taking a closer look, Billy realizes that he’s seen the green plaid flannel pajama bottoms that Dom is wearing before. They are in fact, his pajama bottoms, and now that he thinks about it, they disappeared right around the time of Dom’s last visit to Scotland. The cheeky Brit must have slipped them into his suitcase when Billy wasn’t looking, because he wanted an article of Billy’s clothing close by.

The knowledge that Dom has surrounded himself with Billy as much as he can, touches Billy deeply. Before he knows it, he’s standing next to the bed and leaning over to take a closer look at Dom. Laying his small fingers against Dom’s forehead for a few moments, Billy ascertains that Dom’s not running a temperature, nor is his breathing labored. He does, however, look tired and worn out. Billy is willing to bet that Dom’s been working too hard lately, and his body has decided to rebel a wee bit, to make him slow down.

Suddenly Dom inhales sharply and nuzzles further into Billy’s pillow, his bearded cheek shifting against the cotton. Long eyelashes flutter, but Dom’s eyes do not open as he murmurs under his breath. Only one word is spoken clearly, in a wistful sigh of longing.

“Billy.”

Eyes glistening at Dom’s obvious need for his comfort, Billy moves silently to the other side of the bed and then strips down to his t-shirt and boxers. Gingerly sliding under the sheet, Billy slowly shifts across the mattress until he’s curled up behind Dom, his chin touching Dom’s shoulder, and his knees are resting against the back of Dom’s thighs. Carefully sliding a hand around Dom’s waist to rest against his bare stomach, Billy presses a tender kiss to the nape of Dom’s slender neck.

“Just sleep, Dommie,” he murmurs softly. “Just sleep.”

Laying his head down on the pillow, Billy lets his jet lagged eyes close, and he takes his own advice.

Taking in several deep breaths as he rises from the depths of sleep, Dom slowly becomes aware of his surroundings, though it takes a few extra moments to realize that he’s no longer alone in his bed. For a fraction of a second he panics, but then he realizes the small hand holding him is familiar. Very familiar. Looking over his shoulder, a confused smile of disbelief turns up the corners of Dom’s crooked mouth, and then he’s turning over, ever so carefully, so he doesn’t wake Billy in the process.

Laying nose to nose, Dom inhales several times, taking Billy’s wonderful scent into his lungs, the ache in his belly reminding him just how much he’s missed it. Sliding down a little, Dom tucks his head under Billy’s chin and slides an arm around Billy’s waist to bring their bodies closer. Feeling the strong, steady heartbeat against his cheek, Dom lets his eyes drop closed. In moments, he’s once again, fast asleep.

Dom awakens a short time later when Billy yawns and shifts in Dom’s embrace. Stiff from the long flights, Billy stretches his arms above his head to his full height and then snuggles into the warmth in front of him, blinking several times before he remembers that Dom is probably still sleeping.

Looking down, Billy meets Dom’s sleepy gaze and smiles gently as his fingers slide up Dom’s slender back to stroke the nape of his neck.

“Hey.”

“You’re really here,” Dom says softly, voice gravely with sleep.

“Yes, I am,” Billy confirms, brushing his lips tenderly across Dom’s forehead, both cheeks and then his waiting mouth.

“I though I was dreaming,” Dom murmurs again Billy’s sensuous lips. “I woke up and you were here, holding me.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you.” Billy’s brow furrows in concern as he looks closer at Dom’s face. “How are you feeling, love?”

“Better, especially since you’re here.”

Billy smiles at the blush in Dom’s cheeks and then becomes serious again. “Evey said that your tummy was upset.”

“Tried to eat a some breakfast this morning, but it didn’t stay long,” Dom replies, grimacing at the memory.

“How about some tea and a bit of soup?”

“I’m okay, Bills. You don’t have to-”

“Shut it. You stay here. I’ll be right back,” Billy says before untangling himself and slipping out of Dom’s arms.

“But-” Dom starts to protest.

“Stay.”

Giving Dom a warm, lingering kiss, Billy slides over to the edge of the bed and rises. Running his fingers through his ginger hair in an attempt to calm it, Billy walks barefoot down the hall to the kitchen. A glance out the window confirms that the sun has set while they were sleeping and evening is upon them. Familiar with the kitchen as he’s spent quite a bit of time in Hawaii, visiting Dom, it doesn’t take Billy but a couple of minutes to have the electric kettle set up for tea and some Chicken Noodle soup heating in a pot on the cooker.

Taking two mugs out of the cupboard next to the sink, Billy is reaching for a tin container, filled with the tea bags that Dom keeps on hand just for him, when he hears Dom shuffling down the hall in his direction. Looking over his shoulder, Billy watches as Dom enters the room, t-shirt and flannel pajamas rumpled, and his hair sticking up in seventeen different directions in a chaotic, adorable mess.

“Why aren’t you in bed?” Billy asks, wrinkling his nose at Dom in mock disdain.

“You weren’t there,” Dom replies with a casual shrug, crossing the room and wrapping his arms around Billy’s waist, his chin resting on Billy’s shoulder. “And I don’t want to miss any time with you.”

“Okay,” Billy relents, turning and cuddling Dom in his arms.

The same feeling he had as he watched Dom sleep suddenly washes over Billy, and he’s overcome with waves of emotion. All at once, it hits Billy, how lucky they were to have met in New Zealand and found one another. The years together haven’t been easy, because of the distance, but they’ve made it work. Having someone, so amazing and precious, love him so completely, is such a gift, and Billy finds himself wondering what his life would be today, if he didn’t have Dom in it. The mere idea makes Billy’s heart pang with loneliness, and causes his eyes to fill.

“What’s wrong, baby?” Dom asks quietly, cupping Billy’s cheek and gazing into the deep pools of his lover’s eyes.

“Thank you, for being a part of my life, and loving me,” Billy says, nuzzling into Dom’s comforting touch. “And for letting me be the one to love you.”

Seeming to understand the words Billy isn’t saying out loud, Dom wraps his arms snugly around Billy’s body to hold him close, their lips meeting in a warm, wet kiss.

“Loving you isn’t a choice, Bills,” Dom says softly, his fingers petting Billy’s hair. “You’re a part of me, like the air I breathe. You’re my lover, and my best friend.”

“If love is forever, we'll have all of eternity,” Billy quotes, recalling Dom’s message on his answering machine.

Eyes sparkling his happiness, Dom gives Billy a long, sweet kiss before adding, “And in this life, you'll always have me.”

That was... that was... OMG.

The poem that Dommie said was just so sweet, but I liked what he said to end the message even better. You can feel the longing in those simple words. It's almost tangible between them.

When Dom came up behind Billy and put his arms around him, oh I just love that. That was so sweet to an intense degree. I loved every bit, I just love how great they are together.

You make it really hard to have a favorite story from your archives. *strikes the woe is me pose* This one was just beautiful.
