Title: The Last Step: Prologue/?
Author: Jen
Pairing: Monaboyd
Rating: NC17 overall, this part PG-13 for language.
Summary: The last step is always the hardest.
*WARNING*: DEATH-FIC (in all likelihood)- (I still don't know myself where this one's gonna end up, but judging by the way it's headed, I'm guessing the result isn't going to be a happily ever after. If there's any way I can manage to avoid that final monstrosity, I'll do it- it would break my heart to write it. But I felt I had to give the warning just to be fair to everyone.) WIP. Angst.
Feedback: Would be most warmly welcomed. : )
A/N: Here I am, setting out to take on the one thing I said I'd never write. But, the muses are insistent, and who am I to argue? When it comes right down to it, death isn't meant to be at the heart of this story, anyway...only love. ~

A/N II- A Plea For Help: I'm finding myself in desperate need of a beta, of sorts. I'm making ridiculous spelling errors of late, and I fear the commas are finally starting to overrun me, but more importantly, I think I simply need a bit of encouragement and guidance. I'm juggling around seven fics at the moment, and can't seem to sort out the passably decent from the hopelessly ludicrous on my own anymore. In other words...I need someone willing to dart in and smack me upside the head when I start to wander too far off track. *grins* Anyone willing to accept this awesome challenge would have my undying gratitude. *hugs* ~ Jen

I watched the world float
To the dark side of the moon
After all I knew it had to be
Something to do with you
I really don’t mind what happens now and then

As long as you’ll be my friend at the end

3 Doors Down~

"This isn't one of your better ideas, Monaghan.", Billy grunted, lugging the heavy camping equipment in through the door of the little log cabin. "Why are we doing this, again?"

"Luna moths.", Dom answered chipperly, laying his own bundle down on the rough wood floor. "It's going to be fucking brilliant, you'll see! You'll thank me for this later." Dom paused a moment, then grinned hugely. "Trust me, Bills."

"Those well might be th' most frightening words in th' English language, Dominic.", Billy said dryly, hopping on one leg, trying to get his foot free of the cord to his sleeping bag cover where it had become hopelessly entangled. "Last time y' said that, I found m'self knee-deep in a mudhole full of leeches. Remember that?"

"How could I possibly forget?", Dom snorted. "You screeched loudly enough to break the sound barrier. There were small animals going belly-up all around us from the shockwave." He raised an eyebrow at Billy's frantic one-legged dance, then went over to help, bending down to try and catch hold of the malicious cord. "Stand still, y' git." Dom laughed at Billy, who was still hopping madly. Billy obeyed, and Dom finally untwisted the rope from around his ankle, calling out in triumph, "Got it!" He looked up at Billy, who was red faced and panting from exertion. "Now sit down before you fall down, yeah?"

"Christ." Billy flopped down at a table and groaned. "I'm too old for this nonsense, Dom. One of these days, 'm going t' drop dead on you, then where will y' be, eh?"

Billy thought he caught an odd expression crossing Dom's face, but it was gone before he could take a second look.

"You're only as old as you feel, Bills.", Dom shot back cheerily after only a brief pause.

"Jaysus...in that case, 'm long since worm food.", Billy sighed, wiggling around to try and find a comfortable spot for his arse on the hard oaken bench. "Now, what's so important about these sodding moths that y' had t' drag us out into the wilds of Montana?"

"Rare mass migration.", Dom answered happily, starting to unpack their camping gear. "Only happens maybe once a century, if that. It's going to be like the flocking of the monarch butterflies, but even more spectacular. They should be flying right over us in about..." He stopped to check his watch. "Six hours and thirty seven minutes."

"How in th' bloody hell do y' come up with this information, Dominic?"

"Internet. Found this site this bloke set up just to keep tabs on the Lunas. 'Moth Madness', he calls it. He's tracked their path all the way down from upper Canada. Spent years of his life studying their habits and flight patterns.", Dom explained, voice hushed in something close to awe.

"Y' mean some idiot's taken th' time to pin wee transmitters to the legs of bugs and track th' little bastards all the way across North America? God help us." Billy shook his head in amazement. "And I thought I had no life."

"You've absolutely no sense of adventure, Boyd.", Dom sighed. He rifled through a couple more bags, searching, then glanced up at Billy. "Can't find your sunscreen anywhere. You forget to bring it again?"

"Oh shite!" Billy stood up in alarm. He knew precisely where his sunscreen was- right where he'd left it, on top of the nightstand in his last hotel room. Without it, he'd look and feel like a boiled lobster within two hours. And it wasn't as if he could hop into the car and buzz down to the nearest Handi-Mart; Dom had insisted they hike into the bloody wilderness on foot. "I don't fecking believe it! We'll have t' go back, Dom...y' know I can't step foot outside without..."

"Don't get your knickers all out of alignment, Bills. You can use mine.", Dom interrupted, cheekily waggling a tube in the air.

"Why'd you pack sunscreen, Dominic? You've never worn it in your life."

"'cause I knew you'd forget yours, y' twat.", he smirked, chucking the tube in Billy's direction. "SPF 30, just as you like it."

"Fucker.", Billy growled, catching the sunscreen one-handed.

That was Dom for you- on the outside, goofy and hopelessly daft, but on the inside so sweetly thoughtful and caring it could break your heart. Dom always remembered what Billy forgot, and Billy remembered for Dom- it had been that way since the very beginning. That's why they were so brilliant together, and why there always seemed to be something vital missing when they were apart. They knew each other inside and out, upside and down, backwards and forwards.

And if that wasn't love, Billy didn't know what was.

As if reading his mind, Dom was suddenly right there in front of him, gathering Billy into a tight embrace, nuzzling comfortably against his shoulder. "I'm so glad you came with me, Pip.", he whispered. "I've missed you." For the first time, Billy realized how thin Dom had become, thinner than Billy had ever seen him. A jolt of alarm started to shoot its way through him, but then Dom was looking at him intensely, stormy blue/grey eyes capturing his, and Billy was lost. It should have been so simple to lean in and take that final step, brush his lips against Dom's, say with a kiss what he had never been able to say with words. But Billy blinked and the moment was gone, and he was pulling away, hiding behind a laugh just as he had done a thousand times before.

He and Dom were lovers in every single sense but one. They had somehow never found their way past that one last hurdle, couldn't quite bridge that gap between lifelong friendship and the love of a lifetime. And, deep down, Billy knew it was he who was holding them back. If it would have been left up to Dom, they'd have been together from day one, since the first time their eyes had locked in a tiny costume trailer in New Zealand and that spark had ignited between them, a spark no amount of time or distance had ever been able to douse. They'd never spoken of it, not once, but Billy knew it all the same. Just as he knew it was he who had to take that final step. He'd had one foot over the edge for six long years, teetering, frozen in place. It would only take the smallest of nudges, the tiniest push from Dom to hurtle him over. But sweet, sensitive Dominic would never push- he knew all too well what it was to be afraid.

Dom was the one scared of heights, yet it was Billy who was most afraid of falling.

And the last step was always the hardest.

That was Dom for you- on the outside, goofy and hopelessly daft, but on the inside so sweetly thoughtful and caring it could break your heart. I think this is the most succinct description of Dom that I've ever read in fic. That's him to a tee. And I love how easy your Billy and Dom always are with one another.

And oddly, I was just thinking of Luna moths the other day. I saw one in my backyard this past summer, and I'd never seen one before. Really pretty.

Ahahaha! Of course! Luna moths + The Waltons = Monaboyd fic. It's fandom math, that is. :D

I only recognised it as fandom math because there was some in my journal earlier today. Much easier than say, geometry.

That is the most wonderful description of a friendship/love I have ever read!

This was just gorgeous...I love cheeky Dom and worried Billy.

I haven't waited for the next chapter of a fic as avidly as I am hanging out for the next chapter of this.

This is quite the impressive and beautiful start... Can't wait for more :)
