Margaret wouldn't like it.

"Muddy paw prints," she would cry, "loose fur and fleas and dog slobber!"

Fair points, all of them, but Billy didn't care.

The bed was too big otherwise; he would sleep next to a cold yawning space.

Other gaps could be bridged with long phone calls, ready meals and trips to the pub, but nothing could fill the flat expanse of bedding beside him. He hated stretching out his legs to find his toes chilled by neat, vacant sheets. Having a solid warmth on the duvet was heartening, even if its breath smelt like Pedigree Chum.
