Chapter 14
"Merry, Jamie hold on to Papa… we don’t want anyone getting lost in here," Billy says, lifting Morgan onto his hip as he pays the driver. The girls take Dom’s hands as they head to the line for the ticket counter. Once in line, Billy hands Morgan to Dom and heads back to the taxi to get their bags and to thank the driver. Before Billy can leave, the driver shyly asks for an autograph. Billy smiles while he signs the paper and waves to the driver. Billy grabs the bags and goes back to his family.
__
"Five, Boyd-Monaghan to Scotland."
"Yes sir, I see here we have you down for five first-class seats; may I see your passports please?"
"Yeah sure. Billy, I need the passports and Morgan’s birth certificate." Billy pulls the items out of his bag and hands them to Dom. "Here you go." Dom passes the papers to the woman at the counter. She looks over the papers and gives them both a questioning look before handing them their boarding passes and saying, "Have a good flight."
__
Then to security, customs, and getting something to eat; they only have a few minutes before the flight will board. The twins are running around before the flight to get some energy burned off; Morgan and Dom are playing peek-a-boo; Billy rests his head on Dom’s shoulder, watching his son’s toothless grin.
"Virgin Atlantic Flight 154 to Glasgow, Scotland, is now boarding… rows one through five may now board… also, any passengers with small children may board at this time." Billy and Dom look at each other and start to gather their things. "Merry, Jamie, it's time to go, loves." The girls run to their parents and each take a hand of one of their fathers as they walk to the gate. Billy hands the flight attendant their boarding passes, and they are directed to their seats. Billy places Morgan’s carrier in the window seat next to him across the aisle. Dom sits in the middle of the row with one of the girls on either side of him. Dom has to laugh. The last time the girls were on a plane was when they moved to Hawaii. It feels like going home and leaving it, all at the same time. "Well, my lovely ladies, are you ready for this?" Dom asks, looking at his daughters’ fright. "Papa, will you hold my hand? I’m scared," Jamie says with wet eyes. Dom nods at his daughter, and gives her a quick kiss on the cheek and takes her hand; without saying a word he also takes Merry’s hand in his as well.
__
It’s a little over four hours into their 18 some-odd hour flight. Dom has moved so the twins can sit next to each other and watch the in-flight movie he set up for them. Billy is rocking Morgan in his arms trying to get the boy to go to sleep. Dom reaches across the aisle and makes slow circles on the back of Billy’s neck. Billy closes his eyes and gets lost in the feeling. Morgan is sleeping soundly in Billy’s lap when he opens his eyes. Carefully, so as not to wake the sleeping child, Billy puts Morgan back into his carrier and takes Dom’s hand and kisses the back, then interlaces his fingers with Dom’s. They are both quiet and taking some time to reflect on what will happen in the coming months.
__
"Da, can I come sit in your lap?" Jamie asks.
"Yeah love… just a second." Billy stands to move over to his daughter. Merry climbs into Dom’s lap while Billy moves Morgan into the seat Jamie just vacated and sinks down into the seat next to Dom. Jamie sits in his lap, curling into his chest. Dom and Billy talk softly as the twins fall asleep in their laps. "We'd best get some sleep while we can; here love, put your head on my shoulder," Dom says, moving closer to Billy, and Billy nestles into Dom’s side. Dom lays his head on Billy’s and Billy kisses the underside of Dom’s chin.
__
"Papa… I’m bored, are we there yet?" Merry asks, squirming in her seat. "No Merry mine, we still have another few hours; I’m sorry love," Dom says, looking up from his magazine. "Do you want me to color with you?" "Yeah."
The kids have all been pretty good to this point but there is only so long two little girls with lots of energy can sit still and be quiet. Dom and Merry sit coloring from the new coloring book Matt Fox got the twins for the trip. "Papa, what is this a picture of?" Dom looks at the picture Merry is coloring in. It’s London Bridge; he smiles as he looks down at his own picture of Big Ben… it's home in a way. "Merry, that’s London Bridge and this is Big Ben," Dom points to his own picture. "They are in London. Would you like me and Da to take you to see the real thing?" "Really?" Merry says, with a bright smile at Dom. Billy whispers to Jamie dozing in his lap. "Would you like that too?" Jamie nods, and curls into Billy’s chest.
__
"If passengers would please return to their seats, we will be landing shortly." A disembodied voice comes over the loudspeaker system. Dom shakes Billy gently awake. "Hey, we'll be landing soon, we need to buckle up." Billy looks at the little girls curled up in his arms, sleeping soundly, and nods. "Merry… Jamie, loves, you need to go back to your seats now… we’re almost there… we can cuddle later okay?" The girls crawl back to their seats. He and Dom make sure that the kids are all buckled up and all of their things are collected. Billy looks out the window as the plane touches down. "Welcome to Glasgow, Scotland, the local time is 4:26 pm and it is 16 degrees Celsius and partly cloudy. Thank you for traveling with us and enjoy your stay," says the same disembodied voice. They wait for others to make their way off the plane, then grab their things and move to the exit. Dom whispers to Billy, "You ready for this, my love?" "As ready as I will ever be." Billy gives Dom a quick kiss before they make it to the gate.
__
"Dom, there's one of our bags." Billy points to the seemingly plain black suitcase. "Got it." Dom lifts yet another suitcase off the track and places it with the others beside him. "This all of them?" Dom shouts over the din. "You have four, right?" "Yup, that’s all." Dom looks down at the bags. "Hey Bills, I could use some help," Dom says, struggling with the bags. Billy nods and takes two bags from Dom. "Girls, you hang on to the bags okay?" The girls trail behind their fathers, looking around at all the different things that Scotland has.
__
Billy and Dom get the kids through all the airport check points and are making their way to get a taxi. "BILLY!!!" Billy turns his head and sees a very familiar woman running across the airport. "Maggie!" Billy cries, and drops his bags just in time for a pair of arms to wrap around him. "I’ve missed you, little brother." "Missed you too, sis." "Auntie Maggie!!!!" the twins say together, jumping up and down to get their Aunt’s attention. Maggie lets go of Billy and bends down to hug the girls. Dom gives Maggie a one-armed hug and a kiss on the cheek because he is holding a very cranky Morgan in his arms. "Mags, what are you doing here, I thought we were going to see you tomorrow?" Dom says, breaking the hug. "I couldn’t very well let you take a dirty taxi home." Dom raises an eyebrow. "Alright, alright, I couldn’t wait that long to see you all; now let me see my nephew." Maggie holds out her arms for Morgan. "How is it that I have lasted so long without seeing you? Goodness me, I have missed you all." They follow behind Maggie to the car. Dom sits in the back with the girls to let Billy and Maggie have some catch-up time. Jamie whispers into Dom’s ear, "Papa, Auntie Maggie is on the wrong side of the street." Dom chuckles. "It's okay, love, she knows what she is doing." From the front seat Billy turns. "Girls, look." Billy points to the white house on the corner outside. "That’s where we are going to be living for the next few months." Dom smiles at the sight of their old house. "Girls, let's get you to bed. You can see everything in the morning, okay?" The girls didn’t answer, just held out their arms for their fathers to take them to bed. Maggie gets out of the car and carries Morgan into the house. "Mags, did you get the beds set up?" Maggie nods and places Morgan’s carrier on the kitchen counter. "Thank you, sis." Billy smiles and kisses her on the cheek "I’ve missed you… we will see you tomorrow for dinner." Maggie lets herself out while Dom and Billy put the girls to bed.
__
"It feels weird to be back in this house after so long," Dom says, unpacking his and Billy’s pajama bottoms from their suitcase. "Yeah, its feels like a lifetime ago," Billy replies. "Do you remember the night we took the girls home from the hospital… this was their first home," Billy says with a secret smile on his face. "Yeah, love, I remember… we fell asleep on the couch only to wake up to our first night of parenting… who would have thought it would be so hard to change a nappy?" Dom’s comment makes them both laugh lightly. "Yeah well, they’re worth it." Dom walks over to Billy and puts his arms around him and says, "They’re the best things that have happened to my life… well, after meeting you…come on, love, we're both tired. We can do more reminiscing tomorrow." Billy nods, and lets Dom lead him to bed, helps him out of his clothes, and curls up with him in bed. "Welcome home mein herz,*" Dom whispers, as Billy’s eyes close. "Mo anamchara,*" Billy says in his sleep.
