THe White Tree
For Em, Because.
Fiction, probably. G.
"Will you turn that off, Vig?" asked Karl, for what seemed to be the hundred thousandth time. '"I swear, you are obsessed with that. I love my native country, but even Pete didn't go over that the way you do."
Vig smiles, and waves his hand absentmindedly, and hits '<<' on the remote, again.
'Hope is kindled', he whispers with Ian, hearing the light, quick Pippin-notes begin to pull the richer, deeper Gandalf-notes out of Howard's music. He watches the flames pass history and future from peak to peak while the strings dance Pippin-wishes to Merry, and Aragorn-concern from the wizard pushes on over the brass. Eventually he hears it, right on cue: 'Dom, I'm coming,' tho it is Merry who must win through to Pippin, not Billy to Dom; then the part he loves the best: Rohan comes to Gondor: Eomer to Aragorn, Karl, to Viggo.
"I just love hearing Pip and Gandy in the music, is all, Karl. If I could only paint it... that's what Pete did in that scene, and Howard narrates it so well..."
"Vig, that is like your X-box. You watch it over and over. Why?" Vig looks at Karl and sees the true puzzlement on his face. "Because. If Dom ever hears what Merry does, if Billy really sent the message Pippin did...we won't be the only two to settle down out of that time."
"You, my dear Dane, are as mad as all your kind." "Perhaps. But listen...hear it? Pippin's strings play his earnestness, his naivete, his goodhearted impish valour--and how much he needs his Merry, how much he wants his Merry to know he loves him, no matter what." "And that means?" Karl says, coming to stand behind Vig as he hits '<<' one more time. "That Billy sent a message to Dom; Come as quickly as you can: I need you. And Dom did." Vig smiles into Karl's arm, now casually draped across his chest from behind the couch. "Now, if only they could hear the music in real life...I'd worry less for our friends, is all."
Later Viggo paints 'The White Tree", with bright colours up top, curly Scottish-scented notes floating to an uneven but so beautiful smile across mountains made of tabloids.
It's all he can do, that, and have courage for his friends.
Much later, after the guests have gone, Dom asks Billy, 'what's that?' and Billy says, 'painting from Vig, about New Zealand.' Dom shakes his head, and smiles. 'says to hang it near the sound system.' 'Daft, he is, Aragorn.' Billy smiles, but gets the hammer, humming a melody that changes every second, but carries the same message: Come to me, come quickly. 'and so you did,' he whispers to himself, watching Dom. And so you did.

And... it never even occurred to me that, somewhere in the back of his mind, Pippin would have known that he was calling for Merry. What an amazing idea - *S*.
