Summary: "The thing about Billy and Dom was that it was nearly impossible to puzzle out who was getting who into trouble..."

The thing about Billy and Dom was that it was nearly impossible to puzzle out who was getting who into trouble. For most people it was enough to simply accept that they were in it an awful lot of the time and leave it at that. If someone felt really compelled to figure it out, though, (as Dom did) they inevitably discovered a realm of interesting things.

The main reason they got along so well (and got up to so much) could be attributed to certain complementing facets of their personalities. It went far beyond the sort of same likes and dislikes, same sense of humor, same tolerance for drink stuff they used to explain their friendship to those who didn't understand it. What it really came down to was the fact that Billy just didn't seem to posses the quality of foresight.

It was actually quite remarkable. Billy was the single most impulsive person Dom had ever met. He had a way of saying What if? and then dashing off to try whatever new idea he'd come up with without even a thought for the repercussions. Dom had never seen anything like it.

The two of them got along famously because Dom's mind worked in a completely different way. He had no problem with forethought. In fact, some might say he was overly concerned with it. Dom considered every decision carefully. He made lists of pros and cons in his head (and his journal, and his script, and the backs of his arms). He weighed his options carefully, pared them down to their barest form, considered every last detail that could result from his choice. He made mistakes sometimes, things he would have done differently in retrospect, but for the most part every choice was well thought out. It was just that his choices weren't often what the average person would pick.

One of the major differences between them had to do with the aftereffects of whatever prank they were currently executing, so Dom didn't notice it quite as quickly. It didn't take long, however, and it completed his understanding of how the two of them functioned.

"What if we stayed out here all night?", asked Billy, starting the chain of events that led to Dom's realization.

It was near the beginning of filming and absolutely gorgeous outside. The two of them had finished filming in the mid-afternoon and had wandered off to explore the forest surrounding the shot. As dusk fell they'd found a sudden clearing that afforded them a spectacular view of the stars. Now they were leaning against trees at the edge of it, toes touching, watching the night sky darken, and Billy wanted to stay.

Dom weighed the possibilities. Peter would be angry, of course, if he saw them stumble out of the woods tomorrow morning, disheveled and probably exhausted. He knew from past experience that he'd be close to fine if he downed a few cups of coffee upon arriving. Besides, they weren't shooting anything too important. If they'd switched the schedule around and were doing some vital scene, well, he'd be just as prepared as everyone else. Briefly he considered the possibility of missing call, something neither of them could afford, but that could be easily avoided with the alarm on his digital watch. It was worth it, then. In his estimation the slight impairment of tomorrow's scenes was less important than the nurture of whatever was growing between him and Billy. Their relationship was probably more important to the film as a whole, anyway. So that was that.

The only problem was, that wasn't that. Dom discovered this when they dragged themselves out of Feet the next morning, clutching weakly at giant cups of coffee, to be met almost immediately by an extremely irate Peter. The night had been brilliantly funny and at least two-thirds magical, and neither of them had slept more than half an hour. It showed.

Dom stood respectfully through Peter's lecture, glad at least that he was hissing and not shouting. He offered no excuses. After all, he had know that this was part of the bargain and had made his decision.

Billy, on the other hand, turned white under his makeup the moment he saw Peter. AS the lecture continued Dom glanced over at him and was so surprised he nearly interrupted before he caught himself. Billy looked as though only some shred of pride was keeping him from tears. Once they were released he retreated away from everyone and nursed his coffee in bitter silence, looking guilty enough to border on nausea. The sudden appearance of joyous, innocent Pippin when they started shooting convinced Dom once and for all that Billy was the best actor he'd ever known, and left him momentarily speechless.

On their first break Billy managed to claim a minute of Peter's time. Dom couldn't hear what was said, but he was sure it was an apology. Billy looked professional and polite and absolutely mortified. For the first time, Dom felt a hint of regret. If only he'd known how differently Billy thought he could've eliminated all this discomfort. From now on he would remember.

~*~

So it was that when Billy casually leaned across his dinner and asked, "What if we were in love?", Dom didn't answer immediately. He considered. He listed, he calculated, he predicted, he drew conclusions. Then he did the same for Billy, who obviously hadn't spared a thought for the consequences. Acting as Billy's forethought had become instinct over the years. He took into account the opinions of their friends, the distance between their homes, the media, the possibility of an end to their relationship that would also be the end of their friendship. He determined whether or not Billy would regret his words.

"Yes," said Dom simply. He stood and walked around the table for their first kiss.

I adore how your Billy and Dom seem to be the opposite of fanon--Billy as impulsive and Dom as cautious. I really like seeing them the other way around. It's nice to read something different.

Dom's amazement of Billy is lovely, as is the idea of spending a night in the forest together. I wonder what they talked about and shared? Mmmm. ::nuzzles that thought::

Sweet, this is. :) ♥'s

Oh, that's so sweet. I love when people write Billy through Dom's eyes.

Ah, Scribeling.

I love this, and you, except you a little more than this, but still a lot.

Yay! This was cute and I liked how you took a slightly different angle of the roles they play for eachother. Good job!

The ending is so bittersweet! I mean, it almost foreshadows the end of their relationship for them when it's just beginning. It's weird how you did that, but I love this nonetheless.
