Twisted Fate Alternate Ending

====================================================================
Cold..." Billy managed to gasp, "Feel...cold..." Neither Dom nor Nic had anything on that was dry to give to Billy, who was shivering like anything, and so they could only look on in worry. "Just hang in there, Bills," Dom said, taking his hand off the gearshift and taking Billy's cold, limp one into his, "You're gonna be okay." It was said more to himself than to Billy, because he knew Billy was strong. He could take this, and he was going to get through.

Dominic was dying of worry.

Billy started to cough again, harder this time than before, and Dom didn't bother to hold back the cringe that Billy's coughs caused in him. He dared to look if he was okay.

Nic was stroking Billy's wet hair out of his face, paler now than it was a few minutes (minutes? It's felt like hours to Dom, where the hell was that fucking hospital already, dammit!) ago. Billy had tilted his weak head to the side. There were spots of blood where Billy's mouth came in contact with the head-support.

"Shite," Dom breathed and turned back to the road, "You're gonna be okay, Billy, I promise." "Shut up and drive, Dominic," Billy coughed wryly. Dom wished he could laugh, but the worry was draining him of everything he knew about laughing.

It seemed like forever before they reached the hospital, and even longer before the doctor came out to inform Dom and Nic of Billy's condition.

"He's got a really high fever," the doctor said, "We're not really sure yet about the coughing out of blood, but we figure it must have something to do with the accident he was involved in a few years back. He's got an 80% chance of making it, if that's what you're worrying about."

Dom let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding.

"We're going to have to keep him here for a week, though, just to be sure he'll be fine," continued the doctor, "And...there's something else."

There was a smile on his face, a comforting smile, and Dom was thankful it was no other expression on the doctor's face.

"I've talked to one of my colleagues...we could probably do something about his blindness. If you (and he was referring to Nic) let us work on your father, it's going to mean about another 3 or 4 days here in the hospital, and it's not exactly going to be cheap."

And that, there it was, right there, the best thing Dom had ever heard other than Billy's voice. Fuck whatever else the doctor said after "We could probably do something about his blindness." Billy was going to be able to see again.

"We'll talk to my dad about it first," Dom heard Nic say. There was more excitement and happiness and relief in the boy's tone than anything Dom had ever heard before. "Not now, I'm afraid," the doctor said, "He's unconscious, but we're sure he'll come to in a few minutes. You probably have time to go home and get him some things."

"You stay, I'll go," Nic said to Dom instantly, but Dom shook his head, "No, we're both going," he insisted, "I drive faster than you do. Plus, I need to change, I'm soaking wet. And you need to take care of your little sister, she can't stay at home all alone. So I'm dropping you off at your house. You can come by and visit your dad tomorrow after school."

"Wait, before you go," the doctor said, pulling Dom aside, "There's something you should know..."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Billy's nose started to twitch as it always did just before he woke up from a deep sleep. Dom had noticed this subtle sign, because he had not taken his eyes off of Billy since he got back from his house and Billy's house half an hour ago. And now he moved to sit on the bed beside Billy, who was slowly stirring.

"Where am I?" were the first words he said, and the relief at hearing that voice without the pain and coughing and breathlessness it had a while ago almost overwhelmed Dom.

"In the hospital, Billy," he answered softly, "Safe and sound, as you should be." The smile that started at Billy's lips spread all over his face, reflecting in his unseeing green eyes. "A few more hours and we would have lost you, but...you have some strength in you, my dear hobbit," Dom said, smiling as he shamelessly took a Gandalf line right out of Fellowship. Billy laughed a nice, rounded, solid laugh. "Good to know some people still care about me after all these years," Billy said, and Dom knew exatly who "some people" were. Or was, as it were.

He shifted so he was lying next to Billy, just as he had done that morning. "I've always cared about you, Billy," he said, and he wished now more than ever that Billy could see him, could see the truth in his eyes as he said it.

"Oh by the way," he said, "The doctors said they could probably do something about your sight, Bills." Billy wrinkled his nose in disapproval. "I've seen what they do to those people," Billy replied with a smile, "They stick a little camera in the victim's-I mean, patient's-eyes, and a little chip in the brain that tells them what they're seeing...but the camera's still too big for my taste. No...No, I won't let them fix my eyesight until they can develop a camera that could pass for a contact lens. Besides, you wouldn't love me any less without my eyesight...would you?"

The question had been spoken softly, and as an afterthought, almost as if Billy hadn't been sure he was right. Dom placed a kiss on Billy's forehead. "Of course I wouldn't, Pickle," he reassured him, "Even if you are a hard-headed stubborn little twit who can't seem to get rid of his obsession with rain." "Fucker," Billy said, burying his face in Dom's chest.

Dom sighed. This was how it was supposed to be. Him and Billy, just like this, for the rest of eternity. How could he have forgotten this? How could he have thrown away all this all because of jealousy?

"Don't scare me like that again," he whispered into Billy's hair, "Don't you fucking scare me like that again." He felt Billy smiling into his chest.

And then Dom remembered what the doctor had said.

And he struggled to keep his voice calm.

"Billy?" he said, "Promise me you'll never leave me."

"I won't leave you, I promise," Billy answered, the sleepiness from the comfort he was getting from being in Dom's embrace again infusing his tone.

"No matter what happens?" Dom asked, and he felt his reserve starting to slip.

"I won't leave you," Billy reassured him.

"No matter what?" Dom asked again, and this time his voice actually quivered.

"You can trust me, Dommie-mine," Billy replied, "I'm here for you. I love you."

And that was it. It was all Dom could take. He kissed Billy again, really kissed him, letting all the love he had for Billy shine through the kiss. It wasn't a romantic kiss, nor was it an erotic kiss (something they had shared more often than any other kind of kiss). It was a loving kiss, a kiss to break through all obstacles, a kiss that could and would stand the test of time.

"I'm sleepy, Dom," Billy said when they pulled away, "Stay here with me, okay? Don't go anywhere."

Dom closed his eyes and wished Billy hadn't said that, but he replied anyway with the words he always used when Billy asked him not to leave while he slept. "Go to sleep, Billy," Dominic said, "I'm not going anywhere." He kissed Billy's head again, and repeated, "I'm not going anywhere."

Billy was peacefully asleep in a few minutes, muttering something about how glad he was that Dominic was there with him.

The sun came up the next day to find Dom clutching Billy's limp hand, staring unblinkingly, tearfully, at the smile on Billy's face as he wordlessly told Billy goodbye.

A/N: Um...::wipes welled-up tears from her eyes.:: That's it I guess. It's over. ::SNIFFLES:: I was tearing up when I wrote this by the way, the very ending paragraph, just to let you know that you aren't the only ones.

"...Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?

Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home...

...White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping..."

This was playing while I was typing up the last conversations of Billy and Dom so...::weeps::

Yeah...

So...

That's it. Thanks for reading this fic guys! I love you for it! I hope you enjoyed the entire fic!
