Dom sank into his sofa and looked out the window as he began to process the previous night’s events in his mind. He and Billy had drunk rather a lot, he’d gone back to Billy’s and they had, well Dom had had, what he could say with certainty was the best shag in his life.

One thing that had come out of the previous nights events was that Dom had been able memorise the layout of Billy’s house. Billy had insisted on giving Dom a tour of it when they arrived and Dom, despite being slightly drunk, had memorized the layout. He grabbed a piece of paper and began to draw. By the time he had finished, he had something that would be of much use to his bosses.

Sure enough come Monday morning Dom’s bosses were very pleased with what he had to report to them and told him to keep up the good work.

By Thursday Dom had acquired 40 messages on his answering machine from Billy, though again Dom couldn’t remember giving him his home number. They went along the lines of thanking Dom for Saturday night, thanking him for being so nice (Dom was puzzled by this one), enquiring about the business, asking about further meetings and finally talking about another drink. Dom was tempted but he wanted to keep his mind on the job and didn’t want to risk having feelings get in the way, so he ignored them.

Friday and Saturday brought more messages, which Dom promptly ignored and deleted. On Sunday, Dom saw a familiar figure as he looked around the bookstore. He ducked behind the biggest shelf he could find and saw Billy enter and look around, presumably for him. Dom began to edge his way to the door, but just as he got his hand on the door handle he heard, “Oh there you are Dom. I thought I’d seen you come in here.” Dom turned round and looked at Billy, still keeping his hand on the door handle. “So are you off somewhere exciting? ‘Cause I was wondering of you would do me a favour?”

Dom looked at Billy, and then at the door, and back at Billy again “What kind of favour?”

“Oh, nothing too brutal, I was looking for someone to keep me company while I visited a few friends, that’s all.”

Dom thought for a moment and then said “Where abouts? ‘Cause I have a few things to do this afternoon”

Twenty minutes later, Dom found himself in the back of Billy’s car, looking out of the window and trying to ignore the fact that Billy’s hand was making its way towards him. Billy said something to his driver, and they turned off down a track. They pulled up outside a house and Dom noticed that two of the men from the museum were standing, waiting, outside a car. ‘Oh God, this is it. They really have found me out,’ thought Dom, but Billy didn’t say anything. Instead he leaned across, kissed Dom on the cheek, and got out of the car. Dom wondered if he should follow Billy but decided to wait for a sign, so he sank back into the car seat. Ten minutes later Billy came back and motioned for Dom to follow him. He got out of the car and followed Billy, his curiosity getting the better of him. There, inside the house, stood the two men from the car and a man tied to a chair. Except when Dom looked closer the man turned out to be more like a teenager, a young man at the most, with big blue eyes that were trying not to show fear at this point.

Billy slipped his hand in Dom’s and motioned for the two thugs to continue. The first walked forward and ripped off the masking tape that covered the guy’s mouth. The guy, to his credit, didn’t make one noise. He looked up and stared at the one who had ripped it off and spat at him. Billy didn’t say anything, though Dom felt the grip on his hand tighten. The other thug picked up the crowbar that was on the table and whacked the guy across the knees with it. Again, the guy didn’t make a noise, though Dom saw a single tear roll down his cheek. For ten minutes, the guy took whatever Billy’s heavies gave him. By the end, he was bleeding profusely from several wounds and Dom could tell that he had several broken bones, including both his kneecaps. The two heavies stopped and looked at Billy, who simply nodded. He then turned to Dom and motioned for them to leave. When they got outside, Billy looked at Dom and said “I’m sorry you had to see that. I wanted to be with you, but I had to be here to make sure it was done properly.”

‘Yeah’ thought Dom, ‘Billy Boyd always gets what he wants.’

Billy reached up, gently kissed Dom on the lips, and squeezed his hand. “You want to get something to eat?”

As Dom sat in the car, he saw the two heavies carry out the now dead guy and dump him in the boot.

Well now he really had something to report to his bosses. As they drove off, Dom wondered if Billy had wanted him to see the beating as a warning, or if he purely and simply wanted Dom by his side.
