365 Days to Forget
(Part 2/6)
It happened a year ago. He was in town for a whole week, stretching his time in the States. He was suppose to be there for only two days but decided to make a holiday out of it. Staying at Dom's house, the two of them picking up where they'd left off; staying up late, playing video games, getting drunk every night, reminiscing and laughing so hard they could barely speak.
The night of his birthday, Dom wanted to take him out for a special dinner. Elijah, Orlando and Viggo were all out of the country and Sean was at some marriage encounter weekend with his wife. That left just the two of them. It was obvious there would be no party so Billy was looking forward to his birthday for a change.
He didn't know what Dom had planned but he figured it must be something big when he'd asked Billy to wear a suit. He didn't bring one with him so he ended up borrowing Dom's It was a dark brown one, snug in some places and loose in others but overall he didn't look too bad in it.
Billy was ready first. As he sat on the sofa waiting impatiently for Dom, he leaned back closing his eyes trying to envision all the things Dom could possibly be giving him for a gift this year. You really never knew with him, but you can bank money on the fact that there'll be a lot of thought put into it.
Billy's head snapped up when he heard a throat clear.
"Getting so old you need cat naps now, aye Bills?" ask Dom with a huge grin on his face.
Billy was rendered speechless. His jaw dropped slightly at the sight he saw before him. Dom was the epitome of elegance, a walking GQ cover. He had on a well tailored dark blue suit with small pin striping. He wore a crisp white shirt with a silk tie striped in alternating slate blue, white and navy. His hair was the color of sun-kissed wheat, shimmering and spiked up slightly in all the right places. His face was smooth and clean shaven. A warm and welcoming aroma of sunshine, musk, sandalwood and surf emanated from him.
Billy tore his gaze away from Dom and let out a small cough as he tired to swallow but he found his mouth suddenly very dry.
"You okay, want me to get you some water?" Dom asked with concern.
Billy shook his head "no" since he wasn't able to find his voice. They looked intently at each other for a second or two. Dom, it seemed was at a loss for words as well. There was much left unsaid in that pause. Billy tore his gaze away and moved towards the door. Dom followed. They got into the car and drove in silence to the restaurant.
When Dom walked into the room tonight, something had changed between them . Billy couldn't quite put his finger on it but knew it was there just the same. He was sure Dom could feel it too. He was never this quiet when he drove. He was either singing along with the radio or talking up a blue streak about everything and nothing. Not tonight, tonight he was silent.
Twenty minutes later they arrived at the restaurant. Dom must have made reservations as they were lead immediately to a cozy corner booth. It had a high satin tufted upholstered back and live tropical plants all around which created an air of intimacy. If Billy didn't know any better, he'd swear they were on a date.
Dom took charge that evening. He knew Billy so well that everything he'd ordered, from the wine to the dessert was exactly what Billy would have ordered had he done so himself. They made polite, friendly and casual small talk but it wasn't the usual Billy 'n Dom conversation.
That funny feeling that things were different between them nagged at Billy all night. He shook his right leg under the table, a nervous habit he'd picked up in school. Dom seemed as jittery as Billy. He dropped is fork twice, almost spilled his glass of wine and once even appeared to be sweating, small beads of perspiration breaking out on his forehead. He had excused himself then and left the table for almost ten minutes. When he came back he seemed more composed, the sweat gone and his face slightly flushed as if he had just ran cool water over it.
An hour and a half after they'd gotten there, the ordeal was over. It really wasn't a very pleasant dinner. While the food was exceptional, familiar company was lacking. It was as if they were each dining with strangers.
They got into the car and sat in silence. Dom stared straight ahead deep in thought. Billy sat in the passenger seat glancing at Dom, not sure if the evening was over or if there was more planned, either way, he wished they'd just get on with it.
"Dom, are you alright?"
"Billy, about your birthday..."
They spoke over each other in a rush of words.
"I'm sorry, you go first."
"Sorry, go on."
Again, talking over each other.
This just wasn't them. They didn't have awkward moments. They were so in sync with each other that they knew when the other was about to say something before they opened their mouths. Billy sighed and sat back not saying another word, he was so confused right now that he'd probably just end up saying the wrong thing anyway.
Dom finally spoke, "Billy, what I was going to say was…well, about your birthday present," he turned and looked directly at Billy. "I, um, I actually don't have a gift for you this year." He blushed slightly as he said this, a little embarrassed it seemed.
Billy relaxed, "Is that what had you so uptight tonight Dommie? You've given me this fantastic dinner, I loved it. I don't need anything else. Spending time with you is the best gift I could’ve ask for." he said sincerely.
Dom smiled a little at that and said, "See that's kinda what I thought too Bills. I knew there really wasn't anything that you truly wanted or needed. I racked my brain but couldn't come up with a thing. Then I started thinking, you and I are so much alike. We’re best mates. We know each other so well, it's like we're the same person." Dom was speaking faster now, caught up in the flow and excitement of his words, desperately trying to make Billy understand. "I asked myself what I'd want from you for my birthday and the answer was so simple…you. I'd want to send time with you. That's what I'd enjoy most." Dom looked questioningly at Billy. "Am I wrong?"
Billy stared intently at Dom. He paused for a moment before reaching out and taking Dom's hand off the steering wheel and holding between his own. He gave Dom a half smile and said softly, "No Dommie, you're not wrong, in fact you couldn't be more right. Thank you."
Dom took his other hand off the wheel and covered Billy's with it. He gave them a slight squeeze and nodded his head a few times before clearing his throat and saying, "Alright, good, let's go home then, hang out, whatever." Billy nodded his head in agreement but didn't reply.
They separated and Dom took the wheel again. He started the engine and they again drove in silence. The air grew thick with tension in the twenty minutes it took them to drive home.
Dom pulled into the drive and turned off the engine but neither made a move to get out. The feeling was back, stronger this time. They sat together in the dark, the only light coming from the lamp post across the street and the full moon shining brightly above. Billy strained to read Dom's face. He needed to know…needed to see that Dom was feeling it too but he couldn't, it was too dark. What he did see though, took his breath away. Dom was a silhouette bathed in moonlight casting an aura of glistening silver all around him. He was beautiful.
"Billy," Dom turned to look at him. "I don't know how to do this, not with you. I want to but I'm…" before he could finish, Billy lunged forward pressing his lips against Dom's, tasting bittersweet and fruity, a lingering essence of chocolate mousse and red wine.
There was little movement at first. They seem to be giving each other time to accept this evolution in their relationship. When neither protested, their lips and tongues began a lovers dance, moving in unison, tenderly at first then building momentum until they were hurtling full force into lust, passion and desire. Their hands were everywhere, grasping, groping at anything that would bring them closer to each other.
Dom was the first to break free. He was gasping for air, "Inside, please."
Billy, hair mussed and clothes disheveled murmured breathlessly, "Yeah."
