From the moment he looks at you, you know that something pivotal has changed. After all, you’ve called him a bastard before, and worse things as well, and he’s never looked at you the way he does now, as if, with one word, you’ve brought his world crashing down at his feet.

You try to fool yourself into thinking it’s all an act, because isn’t that what you both are? Actors? But no. You recognize an act when you see one, and the deep hurt in Billy’s eyes can’t be anything but real. The emotion in his gaze is so raw, you find yourself looking away, unable to hold his bright green stare, made all the brighter by the tears lurking just behind those envy-coloured eyes.

But when you look back, all traces of hurt are gone, and his eyes sparkle now with mirth as he punches your arm and returns the insult. And you can’t help but wonder and worry if those flashes of pure pain and sorrow were merely figments of your imagination, if you’ve finally been driven insane from needing Billy and want so desperately to believe that your careless words drive burning daggers into his heart. And as he walks away, taking your heart and soul and sanity with him, you wonder if you’ll ever have the courage to ask.
