Chapter Five

Dom glanced over at Billy again. He had heard the snap of bones breaking when Billy had fallen and had a feeling his lover was in pain, but Billy made no comments. He simply stared out the window, gazing at nothing. “Baby, you ok?” Dom whispered as he took Billy’s hand.

Billy tore his gaze from the window. “I’m fine, Dommie.”

“How’s your leg, love?”

Billy looked down at the ground. “S’okay.”

“Right,” Dom replied, not believing a word of it. “Where are we going? We’re going to have to stop somewhere soon. Get some petrol or something. And he needs some kind of pain medication,” he called into the back seat.

Greg looked up. “We shouldn’t stop anywhere for too long. What’s wrong with him?”

“Dunno. Broke his leg I think.”

Orlando lifted his head off of Sean’s knee. “You ok, Bills?”

Billy shifted in his seat and groaned slightly. “Yeah. You know Dom. Worrying over nothing.”

“I’m sorry, baby, but you’re in pain and...” Dom took his eyes off the road for a moment. “Shit, Billy. You’re bleeding.”

Billy looked down and saw that blood had seeped through the bottom of his pant leg. “Fuck,” he muttered as he closed his eyes and lean his head back.

Greg narrowed his eyes. “You two are together?”

“So what if they are?” shot Sean. “Big fucking deal.”

“Trapped in a car with a bunch of fairies,” Greg muttered under his breath.

Sean snapped his head and glared at Greg. “Excuse me?”

“Seanie, it’s not worth it,” Orlando said as he laid his head back on Sean’s knee and gently rubbed his lower leg.

Sean sighed and threaded his fingers in Orlando’s hair. “You’re lucky I don’t feel like moving right now.”

“I’m pulling over at the first place I see. He needs something before that becomes infe...I mean, he’ll need antibiotics.” Dom was trying very hard not to let panic about Billy creep into his voice.

“We should stop soon anyways,” Greg said with a sigh. “Get some sleep.”

A little over two hours after hastily driving away from their private retreat, they found a small town with a drug store. Dom pulled into the lot and parked. He undid his seat belt and looked back at Sean. “Want to come in with me?”

Sean nodded as he opened the door and crawled out. Orlando seized the opportunity to climb into the seat. He stretched his legs out and groaned in relief.

“Don’t get comfy, mate,” Sean said as he gave Orlando’s hand a gentle squeeze.

“Keep an eye him, ok Orli?” Dom said inclining his head towards Billy who shifted uncomfortably in the front seat.

Orlando simply nodded his head. He still appeared to be in a state of shock.

Sean kneeled until he was eye level with Orlando. “I’ll get you a drink, ok?”

“Ok,” Orlando breathed as he clutched onto Sean’s hand.

Sean smiled and placed a kiss on Orlando’s forehead before heading off with Dom and Alex into the drug store.

“I’ve gotta get out of this car. Stretch my legs,” Greg said as he opened the door. “Here. Take this.” He threw the gun in Orlando’s direction. “I’ll be inside with them. You’ll need this. Just in case.” He shut the door behind him and sprinted off towards the store.

Orlando shifted himself into the front seat. “How ya doin’, Bills?”

“Truthfully? I’ve been better.” He leaned over and rolled up his bloodied pant leg. “Fuck,” he whispered. His ankle was bent at an odd angle with a sliver of bone sticking out through the skin and there was a large amount of blood soaking through his sock. “Christ.”

“You’ll be ok, mate. Dom’ll...” Orlando’s face paled as he looked out the window. “Shit.”

Billy turned and looked out the window. He saw a man running towards the car. “Fuck,” he whispered.

Orlando somehow managed to open the other door and dragged Billy out. Billy leaned on the horn quickly to alert the others. Orlando reached into the back seat and grabbed the gun. Supporting Billy, he slowly backed away from the car as the infected man advanced on him. He cocked the gun and aimed it at the man’s chest.

Alex, Greg, Dom, and Sean flew out of the store into to see what was happening. Dom and Sean tried to run back towards the car, only to be held back by Alex and Greg.

“Shoot him! Just fucking shoot him!” Greg called as he tightened his grip on Dom’s upper arm.

Orlando swallowed. His arm was shaking and there was no guarantee any bullet he shot would go into the infected man. The last thing they needed was a flat tire. He felt Billy slipping at his side and made up his mind. Steadying himself as best he could, Orlando fired off a shot just as the infected man barreled down on him. Lucky for all of them, his shot went into its intended target.

Orlando stared at the body as it fell to a heap in front of him. The gun slipped from his hands and onto the pavement. “I...I just killed someone,” he whispered. He slumped against Billy who could barely hold his own weight, let alone Orlando’s. The pair slid to the ground just as Sean and Dom came to their side.

Dom caught Billy and gathered him into his lap. “Baby, are you ok?”

Billy nodded as he clung to Dom’s shirt. When they had fallen to the ground, Orlando had landed on his bad ankle, causing waves of pain to return. “I’m fine. Still alive.”

Dom brushed back Billy’s hair and kissed the top of his head. “We...we got your stuff, baby. You’ll be fine,” he said, more to reassure himself than Billy.

“How’s Orli?” Billy whispered.

Sean knelt in front of Orlando so he wouldn’t startle the man. “Orli? You ok, mate?”

Orlando drew his knees up to his chest and began to rock back and forth. “I killed him,” he muttered. “I killed him.”

Sean put his hand under Orlando’s chin and forced the younger man to look at him. “Orli?”

Orlando stared at Sean. His eyes lacked their normal sparkle. Despite all the ‘killing’ he’d done in his movies, the reality of the situation fell sharply onto Orlando. “I killed him, Seanie. I killed that man.”

“Orli,” Sean muttered as he took Orlando’s hand in his. “You had to. You had to protect yourself and Billy. You had to do it.”

Orlando shook his head as the tears started to fall. “I killed him.”

Sean gathered Orlando in his arms just as the younger man began to sob and shake. “We should stop for the night,” he said to Greg who was simply staring at Orlando like it he was an alien. “We need to get Billy’s leg set anyways and Orlando’s in no shape to travel.”

Greg sighed as he picked the gun up from were Orlando had let it fall to the ground. “Fine. We’ll sleep in the store. It was empty of any infected and should be safe. Kid has good aim, I’ll give ‘im that.”

Orlando pulled himself out of Sean’s arms and returned to his original position. “I killed him,” he began to chant under his breath.

Sean sat down in front of him and rubbed soothing circles on his back. “It’s ok, mate. It’s ok,” he muttered reassuringly.

Dom kissed Billy’s forehead again as he watched Sean try in vain to comfort Orlando. He was a bit surprised to find traces of a fever on Billy’s forehead. “You ok, Billy?” He put his hand to Billy’s head and felt the warmth of Billy’s skin. “Think you have a fever, baby,” he said softly.

“Last thing we need,” Billy said as he pulled himself away from Dom and into a sitting position. “Last fucking thing we need.”

“Let’s get inside, eh? Getting dark out,” Alex said as he clutched his bat in his hands.

“Help me with him,” Dom said as he pulled Billy to his feet. He slung one arm over his shoulder as Alex supported Billy on the other side. “Sean, you got him?” he asked, nodding towards Orlando.

“Just give us a minute, ok?”

Dom bit back the urge to say ‘For pity’s sake.’ “You too,” he said to Greg. “Sean’ll get him inside.”

Greg nodded and shoved the gun into Sean’s hand. “Just in case.”

Orlando cringed slightly and began to push away from Sean’s touch.

“Take it. We’ll be in soon enough.” Sean gave Greg the gun back. “The last thing he needs right now is that fucking thing reminding him of what just happened.”

“Fine. See if I care when an infected gets you.” Greg stuck the gun in the waistband of his jeans. “I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.” With that, he stormed off.

“Fucking asshole,” Sean muttered as he lightly ran his hand over Orlando’s curls.

“He’s a nice guy, when you catch him at better times,” Alex said. “Had to kill his own brother.”

“Still, Orlando’s a fucking mess. He could show a little compassion,” Dom spat.

“Calm down m’Dommie,” Billy said as he squeezed Dom’s shoulder. “Greg’s been dealing with this a lot longer than we have.”

“Still, Christ,” Dom said as he glanced over at Sean and Orlando. “Come on, Bills. Let’s get you inside and cleaned up a bit.”

Soon it was only Sean and Orlando in the abandoned parking lot. “Orli, come on, mate. Let’s get inside before another one comes.”

Orlando looked over at Sean, his face red for tears. “Seanie, I...I.” He gulped as he leaned over and kissed Sean quickly on the lips before turning away. “Sorry,” he muttered into his knees.

“Lando,” Sean murmured as he brushed back Orlando’s hair. “It’s ok. It’s really ok.” He helped Orlando to his feet. “Come on, Lando. Let’s go in, ok?”

Orlando nodded as he leaned against Sean, wrapping his arms around the older man’s waist. “I love you, Seanie,” he whispered into Sean’s ear.

“Love you, too, Lando,” Sean said as he brushed back Orlando’s hair and kissed his forehead. He wasn’t sure if they both meant it in the same way, but right then, Sean didn’t care.
