Assumptions
As they seated themselves, chattering happily, Billy raised his eyes from his bottle of Corona and looked around the table. Elijah was turned talking to Sean and Christine about their daughters, while Orlando and Kate were talking softly to each other. Billy's eyes and attention floated around the room until he saw Dom, his blue-gray eyes turned towards the girl standing before the grill, spatula in hand. He focused his attention harder on what was being said, "You need help or anything, darling?" he asked softly.
“No, I’m all right,” she said quickly, flashing him a slight smile before returning her attention to the slowly burning meat. “You want to do me a favor though?” She looked up at him again.
“Whaddya need?” Dom said softly, placing his hands on her waist and turning slightly. Billy sighed and returned to his beer. After all lip reading didn’t work when the subject wasn’t facing you.
Billy didn’t even know why he bothered to show up at this little party Dominic was throwing. Yeah, they were best mates, but you'd think that Dom would at least bother to throw a little attention to him. Billy’s eyes flicked over to the girl, studying her silently. She was shorter then Dom, about 5’5”, and had short-cropped blondish brown hair. ‘Dominic must have taken her to get it streaked,’ Billy thought, moving his eyes down her figure. She was rather shapely in olive colored Capri's with a black tank top and olive colored thong sandals. ‘She’s got a weird taste in clothes...like Dom,’ Billy continued to silently compare the two of them, trying to figure out why he’d pick her for a girl. She wasn’t particularly pretty, and the complete opposite from what Dom normally dated. She was polite, yes, but she was also the same type of girl Billy had hated as a teenager, being exceedingly outspoken, and an air of quiet defiance. Billy tried his damndest not to like her, still feeling that she had killed all hopes to be with Dom. She was the reason for this bar-b-que, since Dom had wanted to introduce her to everyone. That’s what he'd told Billy on the phone, anyway.
Everyone who knew Dom knew he had a different way of going on with relationships. Yeah, he'd been dating since he moved to California, but he never really referred to any of the girls as his girlfriends, or that he really had been “dating” anyone. Instead, Dom would say cheekily, “She’s just some bird that I hang out with,” always ending with a lopsided grin, so that everyone assumed that she was something much longer lasting. Dom'd only refer to her as his “roommate”, and from what everyone else could tell she really didn’t mind.
When Billy pulled out of his thoughts he noticed Elijah looking at him, slight concern written on his face.
“Bills, man...you all right?”
“Oh, yeh Lighe, just a bit tired I s’pose.”
He looked at him for a minute longer, then decided not to push it. “Alright, Bills,” Elijah said as he lit up cigarette, only to be quickly yelled at by Sean about health concerns before grudgingly stubbing it out.
Billy looked around and noticed that Enid and Dominic had disappeared, then saw they were coming through the sliding glass door carrying huge bowls of food, placing them in the center of the table.
“Mm, this smells so good, Enid.”
“Yeah love, it smells great,” Dominic said quickly, placing a bowl in front of Elijah.
The entire group then began to compliment until a smiling Enid interrupted, saying, “Hey, try it before you compliment! It may smell good, but I’ll still feel better after you taste it.”
“So what are yeh servin’ us Enid?” Billy asked politely, looking up at her.
“Carne Asada, Black Beans and Rice, Roasted Corn, homemade salsa and tortillas,” she replied proudly.
“You made all this?” Christine said, looking amazedly at Enid. “I can't believe you'd be willing to do that much home cooking!"
“Well, not all of it. Dom helped by making the salsa, beans, and rice, and I got the tortillas from this little Mercado that I go to,” she replied, smiling.
“Mercado?” Billy said suddenly, the Spanish flowing from his lips sounding odd indeed with his accent.
“'Market', Bills, it’s Spanish for 'market',” Dom said, grinning like a Cheshire cat at Billy. God, how Billy loved that smile, the sparkle that came to Dom’s eyes when he was truly amused.
Before long, shadows started to stretch across the lawn as and the sun slowly sank to meet the horizon. Dinner was long over, and now they'd separated into two groups - Elijah, Dom and Orlando were trying to instill in Kate and Enid the beauty of the game CUP, while Sean and Christine sat shaking their heads and grinning in amusement. It wasn't until Christine turned to Billy to say something that someone finally noticed what was wrong. He was sitting, absently staring out into space...at Dom.
“What’s wrong, Billy? You seem out of sorts,” she said softly, looking at him. “Sean said you’ve been a bit down lately.”
He started, then plastered yet another fake smile on his face. “No, no, I’m a’right.”
“Billy, I haven't seen you this down since you and Dom were separated for a week when he had to go back to Manchester.” Billy grimaced internally, remembering that week vividly. He had missed him so much, but his Dommie returned to him—greeting him with a kiss—a week later. Those were the days Billy still cried over, the days he missed so much. The days he tried to escape with Ali, another failed attempt at a relationship.
"Honestly...what's wrong?" Sean's voice interrupted Billy's thought again, jarring him back into the present. "You've been acting like this ever since you've got here. What's the problem?"
“Sean, I’m a’right, okay?” Billy spat suddenly, taking another swig of beer.
“It’s Dom, isn’t it, Billy?” Christine asked softly, looking at the two of them back and forth.
“No...no, it isn't.” Billy knew it wasn’t really about Dom after all...it was about Enid. He looked at them, sitting together, Enid laughing at some stupid thing Elijah just did. 'So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts. What the fuck's so amazing about that?!’ he thought to himself. “Dun’t worry ‘bout me, Christine, I’m a’right. Okay?” He shrugged, then stood to get another beer. It was his third in an hour.
Christine's eyebrows knit with worry, then whispered to Sean, “He never got over Dom, did he?”
Sean shook his head. “Just leave it alone, Chris.” He got up to go see if Elijah was all right, as he nearly beheaded himself by flying face-first towards the grill from a bit of wet grass.
They eventually all migrated into the living room, yet soon after Sean and Christine had to leave, saying something about them having kids to go home to take care of. Kate and Orlando headed out shortly after. Finally, it was left to just Elijah and Billy, who were sitting on the floor of the living room playing Playstation and taking turns whooping each others asses while Dominic helped Enid load dishes into the dishwasher.
“You know, Dom, you could go play video games. I’m fine doing this myself.”
“I know, but I’d feel like an arse. Plus...I dunno, Billy’s been acting a bit weird.”
“Mmm...you’d be acting a bit weird around some one you love, too.”
Dom turned to her, jaw dropping to the ground. She smirked and continued washing the dishes. “Don’t look at me like that, Monaghan, you know as well as I do.”
“You’re wrong, Billy and I are friends, and nothing more. We’ve been …”
"Face it, Billy loves you in a way that you’re not ready to deal with. Or you’re in complete denial of it. In either case, you should do something about it.”
“Enid...he’s not.”
“Dominic, you need to deal, and I think I know why Billy’s been brooding.”
Dom smirked. “And why is that?”
“It’s the same assumption everyone here left with.”
“They think you and I are together, which we both know is a crock of shit.”
“Everyone?”
“Well Kate doesn't, she asked me how long you and I had been dating while Sean was tending to the wounded blue eyed devil.” Enid laughed a little. "I explained to her you and I weren’t a couple, and that we’ve never even thought of being together.”
“What did she say?”
“She said that she was surprised and that everything you did lead her to believe we're going out.. I explained to her that you’re too affectionate to realize what you’re doing.”
Dominic stared at her, dumbfounded, silently gaping like a fish despite himself. He knew she was right, he just didn't want to admit it to himself. Billy in love with him. It couldn’t be possible, Dominic stared off into the distance, not even noticing when she passed him a clean glass to dry. He dropped the glass, crashing to the ground and the shards spraying in every direction.
“Fuck Dominic!” she said, half laughing and half irritated.
“You all right, guys,” Billy and Elijah shouted simultaneously from the living room. When nobody responded right away, they paused the game and came into the kitchen. Enid looked up at the both of them.
“We’re fine, guys.” Dom said shakily, moving to start picking up the broken pieces.
“Yeh don’t look fine, Dommie,” Billy said concernedly, moving closer to help him.
Enid took this chance, knowing what needed to be done. Maybe some one needed to push them into the hands of fate instead of forcing them to do it themselves.
“Dom, you don’t look so well. Billy, do us a favor and take him out to the patio. I think he needs some fresh air.” Elijah can you help me with this?” she said, turning towards him.
“Sure! Where’s the dust pan?” he chirped. Enid pointed to the small pantry closet then turned to Billy and Dom again. “Go on, Billy, take him outside before he passes out! I don’t want to have to take my freaking landlord to the hospital tonight,” she giggled.
Billy looked back over his shoulder at Enid; she gave him a knowing wink and again focused her attention on Elijah and cleaning up the glass. ‘What was that about,?’ Billy thought as the pair of them went outside. Calming himself, he sat in a chair, rationalizing that 'Nobody knows, so I'm safe...at least for now,' before turning his attention again to one Dominic Monaghan.
