Billy’s head shot up, his green eyes full of panic when he stared at Elijah in shock.
“I’m n...” he started, but it needed nothing more than a single raised eyebrow to shut him up.
He sighed. “Please tell me it’s not that obvious...”
Elijah put his arm around Billy’s shoulders again and pulled him close.
“Don’t worry, it’s not. I don’t think anybody else noticed...”
With another sigh, Billy let his head drop to Elijah’s shoulder.
“But...you did notice...”
Elijah waved his free arm as he couldn’t shrug because his shoulder was blocked by a Scot.
“It takes one to know one, I guess...” he whispered and gave Billy a shy look when the older man glanced back up at him in surprise.
“You mean you are...”
This time, Elijah was able to shrug.
“All I wanted to say was...I guess one has to know what it means to suffer from a love for someone you can’t have to notice that somebody else feels the same...”
For a second, Billy studied Elijah’s profile, the slight frown on the perfect face, the usually almost white cheeks blushing a light pink, and suddenly, realization hit the Scot with all its might.
“Lena?” he whispered and watched as those amazing blue eyes slowly closed before Elijah nodded hesitantly.
“I...we...I mean, I met her that night at a pub and they were the first band I’ve ever seen who actually played a song by the Pumpkins...when they were finished, they were sitting at the bar and...I wanted to get another drink anyway, so I walked over. While I was waiting for my beer, Lena suddenly turned and asked if I had liked the gig.”
The younger man sighed. “You know me...nothing could ever stop me once I start talking about music. We’ve been talking for hours...I came home long after sunrise.”
Billy waited patiently for Elijah to continue and after a while he did.
“I liked her a lot – but at that time, I thought it was because of the fact that she was in that amazing band. I’ve been to several of their shows afterwards...and one night, Dom just stood in front of my door and asked if I wanted to come and have a drink with him. I...I told him that I wanted to see Dancing With Devils play and he had never heard of them before so...I just brought him along. Two days later he called and asked me to come over. I did and...Lena was with him. I guess that must’ve been the moment when I realized that she was more than just a singer or a friend for me...”
Blue eyes met green ones and for a few moments, the two men just communicated without words, revealing all the pain both of them felt to each other through their eyes.
Finally, Elijah broke the silence. “Billy?”
“Hm?”
“Why? I mean, you’ve got Alison, you seem to be happy with her so...why Dom?”
Billy shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. “I’m not even sure if I know the reason myself. Do you have a reason to love Lena? What I’m trying to say is...it just happend. I guess it did happen quite some time ago but...you know, I’ve always been the good one...one you could rely on, someone who wouldn’t do anything unexpected or just plain crazy. Dom changed me so much...he made me learn how to surf, he made me cover Orli’s trailer in that fake dog-poo...hell, he even made me wear one of your wigs though it was way too large for me. You and your dickhead.”
Elijah smiled a little, but didn’t interrupt.
“He changed things I didn’t know I wanted to change...and sometimes, I seemed to be scared of these changes. I’ve always dated women...I never thought I could actually feel like that for another man – but now I guess I was just afraid to give in to what I was feeling for him. When I met Alison, it was like returning back to normal after all that time I had spent with you guys...and it was easy to pretend that I loved her.”
“...but you never really did.” Elijah fumbled with an unlit clove, his words being much more of a statement than a question.
“No...no, I think I never did.” Hearing himself say what he had felt deep inside ever since he had met Alison brought fresh tears to Billy’s eyes – but he didn’t allow himself to weep again.
Not as long as Elijah was sitting beside him, that young man who seemed so fragile and innocent but was just as broken as Billy himself was – only that he wasn’t letting it show.
“Maybe you should stay with me tonight...it’s their last night together after all...might be a little loud at their place...”
Billy would have kissed Elijah for that idea – if it hadn’t been for Dom and Lena who each owned one of both their hearts without even knowing.
Instead, he just pulled the younger man up and hugged him tight.
“I’d love to, Lighe...”
The door flew open in the middle of their embrace.
They let go of each other immediatly, blushing a little when Jake studied their faces, both red from alcohol, crying and more unshed tears.
“Just pretend I’m not here, guys...just wanted to wash my hands. Your friend Dom accidentially covered me in beer...honestly, I don’t wanna know what’s going to happen once the two of them get home tonight...if they keep up that passion or even increase it, the whole house might tumble down...”
Jake grinned while drying off his hands and winked at Billy and Elijah before turning and leaving them alone.
“So...you’re staying with me tonight. And I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”
All Billy could do was nod.
“Hey, Dominic, you should’ve told me that Elijah and Billy do have something going on there before I just walked in on them.”
Lena had to grab Dom’s shirt to keep herself from falling off his lap while her and her boyfriend stared at Jake, who casually slumped down on his chair and sipped his beer.
“They have WHAT?!” Dom finally regained his ability to speak, but Lena was still clinging to his shirt and staring at her guitarist who started to grin broadly.
“I walked in on them when they were hugging...all red in the faces and stuff...and you can’t tell me you didn’t notice they’ve been in there for quite some time...”
Dom and Lena exchanged glances.
“Uhm...”
Jake giggled into his glass. “Okay, maybe you didn’t...but believe me, they were...”
Dom had just opened his mouth to reply when Billy and Elijah came back to the table and grabbed their coats.
“Uhm...sorry we’re leaving early, but I think, I’ve been drinking too much. Not feeling too well. Oh...and...uhm...Billy and I thought you might wanna spend your last night together without anyone else around so...he’ll stay with me tonight – it’s our little farwell-pressie to Lena.”
Jake hastily waved to Billy and Elijah before he ran back over to the stage.
Dom and Lena followed him with their eyes and just caught one last glimpse of him collapsing from laughter behing the drums before they looked back up at Elijah, trying not to show that they didn’t believe a single word.
“Well...if this isn’t a problem for any of you...”
This time, it was Lena who found her voice first.
“No, not at all. You know I’ll gladly let Billy stay with me.” Elijah looked more than relieved when they took up his lie, Dom noticed before glancing at Billy.
“O-kay then...have a good night there, Bills...I’ll pick you up when I dropped Lena off at the airport, alright?”
Billy just nodded before he was pushed aside a little when Elijah untangled Lena from Dom’s arms and hugged her close.
“Goodbye, Babybunny...have a good trip and a lot of fun with that movie...I’m gonna miss you so fuckin’ much...”
There were tears in his voice and shimmering in his eyes when he let go of Lena and it hurt Billy even more to know what was really going on in Elijah’s heart just then.
He himself wished Lena all the best because he knew it was what everybody expected, mumbled a quick goodbye and all but ran to the door, Elijah following right behind.
Once they had found a cab and gotten in, both of them silently stared out of the windows, tears blurring their visions until they had reached Elijah’s place at last.
When the door fell shut behind them, they finally let their masks drop, holding on to each other for dear life until both their shirts were soaked with tears.
