Chapter Thirty-Four
Billy returned home to find his house in complete disarray, his son in a miserable mood, and his boyfriend at his wits end. He walked in to find toys and clothes scattered to the four corners of the living room.
“Luke! Dom! Where are you two?” he called as he threw his bag onto the floor.
Lucas walked out of his room, slamming the door behind him. “Good, you’re home,” he said as he sank onto the couch.
“I missed you, too,” Billy said as he placed a kiss on Lucas’ head.
“He won’t stop screaming!” Lucas yawned. “Hasn’t since Matt left.”
“Who? Michael?” Billy asked, raising an eyebrow. Michael had always been a rather quiet baby, even with the little contact Billy’d had with him.
“Yes,” Dom said as he entered the living room, holding a sniffling Michael on his hip. “Here. See if you have any luck.” He handed the baby to Billy before sitting beside Lucas. “Thanks for slamming your door, Luke. Really.”
“Sorry,” Lucas muttered.
Dom rubbed his eyes. “I’m exhausted.
“You could’ve said no,” Billy said as he sat down and placed the baby on his lap.
Michael stuck three fingers in his month before leaning against Billy’s chest. He was soon sleeping soundly.
“Of course!” Dom said as he threw his arms up in exasperation. “Now he sleeps. Jesus.”
Billy chuckled. “You sound like a girl, Dom.”
Dom leaned back and smiled. “I do, don’t I? Have I been acting like a girl, Little Scot?”
“Yes!”
“Someone’s in a bad mood,” Dom said as he ruffled Lucas’ hair. “Think you’re tired, little man? You didn’t have to get up with him.”
“You didn’t have school,” Lucas countered, his arms crossed over his chest.
“Who brought you to school?”
Lucas scowled. “Fine. You win.” He leaned back on the couch, a sour look on his face.
“Well, thanks for the warm welcome,” Billy said, as he looked down at his son’s cross face and up at Dom’s exhausted eyes.
Things settled down after Billy returned. Michael started sleeping more. Matt sent money on a regular basis for diapers, food, toys, and clothes. It felt strange to have an infant around, but the three quickly adjusted.
Billy sat in the wings, waiting for his cue. Rehearsal was going smoothly for his new play.
“Hey, Billy. Phone.”
Billy turned and looked up at George Fredricks, one of the stagehands. “Phone?”
“Yes. You know? That invention where you dial numbers and you’re connected with someone you’re far from? Makes a little bit of a ringing noise?”
“Very funny, George.” Billy got to his feet and walked over to the stage phone. “Hello?”
“Dad, he forgot me.” came Lucas’ slightly hostile voice.
“What?”
“He forgot me.”
“Dom forgot you? He didn’t pick you up?” Billy became worried. Dom wouldn’t forget Lucas. Not for any reason. But what worried him more was what could’ve happened to Luke.
Lucas sighed. “Yes. That’s what I said.”
“Calm down, all right? No need to get rude.” Billy looked at his watch. Lucas should’ve been picked up nearly forty-five minutes before. Fortunately ,Lucas’ school was only a few blocks from the theater. “I’ll come and get you. You mind staying at the theater?”
“No. I just want to leave.”
“I’ll be right there, Boo. Are you in the office?”
“Yeah.”
“Wait right outside, Boo. Don’t go with anyone.”
“I know, Dad.” Lucas sniffled slightly. “I won’t go with anyone but you.”
“I’ll be there soon, Boo.” Billy hung up the phone and found the director, explaining he’d be right back. He was lucky enough to have a father as a director. He easily understood and called for break will Billy got Lucas.
Billy pulled up to find Lucas sitting on the sidewalk, his head in his hands. “Hey, Boo.” He stopped the car and got out. He saw Lucas wipe his hand over his eyes. “You ok, Boo?”
“No.” Lucas sniffled. “He forgot me.”
“Luke.” Billy sat beside his son. “Uncle Dom didn’t mean to forget you.”
“He did. And he’s not my uncle. He’s Michael’s uncle.” Lucas frowned and placed his elbows on his knees.
“Luke...” Billy sighed as he gently rubbed Lucas’ back. “You know Dom loves you. He was so worried when...when you were missing.”
“Not like Michael,” Lucas muttered.
Billy shook his head. “Come on. Let’s get to the theater.” He picked up Lucas’ bag and led him to the car.
Lucas was silent the whole ride back. Billy didn’t know what to make of his son. He was very surprised Lucas was jealous of Michael. Lucas had loved the idea of Michael staying. Amazing how much that had changed in the last seven months.
Billy left Lucas sitting in the back of theater. “Do your homework,” he ordered over his shoulder.
Lucas sighed but pulled out his math book and got to work.
They arrived home later that day to find Dom sound asleep on the couch, Michael nowhere in sight, but presumably sleeping in his crib. Lucas stormed into his room, slamming the door behind him. Michael started to cry.
“Great,” Dom muttered as he woke up. “Who woke him up?”
Billy shrugged. “Did you forget something today?” he asked casually.
Dom sat up. “Don’t think I did.” Michael’s cries quickly turned to sniffles. “Good.”
“You did forget something,” Billy said as he sat on the couch, placing Dom’s legs in his lap. “Someone actually.”
“Some...Christ.” Dom placed his head in his hands. “Little Scot. Shit. I’m so sorry, Billy.” He knew how much Billy worried about Lucas’ safety.
“It’s ok. He called me. I got him. But he’s mad at you.”
Dom leaned back. “Shit. Shit. Shit. I should talk to him.” He started to get off the couch.
“Leave him alone for now. Let him be mad for a bit.” Billy shook his head. “You’re doing a lot, you know. Not surprising you forgot something.”
“Yeah, but he’s my Little Scot. How could I forget my Little Scot?”
Billy shrugged. “Don’t know. Don’t worry about it, Dommie. I’ll just have him dropped off at the theater tomorrow. Give you a break.” He took of Dom’s shoes and started massaging his feet.
“I feel like the mother,” Dom said with a laugh.
Billy chuckled. “Works for me.”
Dom pulled his legs off Billy’s lap. He scooted over until he sat almost on top of the Scot. “I thought you were the girl in this relationship.”
“Fuck you,” Billy said with a chuckle.
Dom cocked his head to the side. “I thought we preferred it the other way.”
Billy nodded. “Usually.”
“See,” Dom said as he leaned over and kissed Billy softly. “You’re the girl.”
“Bih! Bih!!” came a scream from Michael’s room. Michael knew only three words. No, up, and Bi, which they took to mean Billy.
Billy sighed and laid his head back. “I’ll be right back.” He kissed Dom softly before heading down to Michael’s room.
Dom got up and went to Lucas’ room. He opened the door slowly and found Lucas lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling.
“Little Scot?”
Lucas rolled over. “I’m tired.”
Dom sighed and knelt beside Lucas’ bed. “I’m sorry, Little Scot. I didn’t mean to forget you.”
Lucas sat up. “But you did.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “You like Michael better.” He shrugged. “But that’s ok. He is your real nephew.”
“Lucas,” Dom said as he moved to sit on Lucas’ bed. “I don’t like Michael better just because he’s my real nephew. You know I love you, Lukie.”
Lucas sniffled and nodded. He was ten now, but crawled into Dom’s lap nonetheless.
“There’s my Little Scot.” Dom kissed the top of Lucas’ head. “Come on. Let’s go pick up something for dinner.”
Lucas nodded and hopped off the bed. “You won’t forget me tomorrow, will you?”
Dom shook his head. “Nope. But, I’ll make a deal with you. If I forget you again, I take you out for ice cream.”
Lucas nodded. “Deal.”
