Chapter Two

The Fellowship went out one night before shooting started. Instead of going to a club or a bar, they decided to make it a quiet night at a restaurant. They’d been in New Zealand as a Fellowship for about a week now and one of them, Ian or Astin, no one could remember, felt they needed to bond over dinner.

Billy didn’t feel much like bonding that night. The anniversary of his mother’s death was the following day. He didn’t want any of them to know about his parents. He’d always hated the sympathetic looks he got whenever anyone found out. It was Dominic who had convinced him to go. Billy found himself unable to say no to anything the man suggested.

“So, what should we talk about first?” Elijah asked, rubbing his hands together.

“Family, I think,” Astin said as he looked around the table.

Orlando looked over at Billy. He was the only one who knew about the death of the older man’s parents. The two had spent two long plane flights together, filled with alcohol, and secrets were spilled. “How about past acting experiences?”

“I like the family thing,” Bean put in. “Family. Twice divorced. My current wife is in England with my daughter, Evie. Have two other girls, Lorna and Molly. Great kids.”

“I have a daughter myself,” Astin put in. “Alexandra, but we call her Ali. Been married for about seven years now. Mother and father are actors, too.”

“This we know,” Elijah said, rolling his eyes. “You’ve only mentioned it like a gazillion times.”

“Gazillion?” Ian McKellen asked. “Lovely amount. I, myself, have no children. Hard to when you’re gay.”

Stuart laughed as he was drinking his water, sending himself into a coughing fit.

“Don’t die. Peter will kill me. Anyways, I’ve been with the same man for eight years. Another Sean. Best not have him come to visit. We might get confused.”

Orlando patted Stuart on the back. “Well, I’m single. No kids. No ex’s. I’m rather boring.”

“Same with me. But I am only eighteen,” Elijah added.

Once Stuart had settled himself, he said, “No kids here, either. Not divorced, but I have a girlfriend.”

John Rhys-Davies looked up from his food. “Same here. We need some variety.”

Dominic, who had been staring at Billy, looked up. “My girlfriend gave me a choice, this movie or her. Guess we know what won.”

“Good choice, mate,” Orlando said as he slapped Dominic on the back.

Dominic hit Orlando back. “My brother and parents live in Manchester. Have this huge mess of nieces and nephews. And you, Billy?” Dominic said as he turned his gaze back to Billy. “Your family?”

Billy looked up. “Don’t have much. Just my sister.” He reached out and lifted his drink to his lips. “My parents are dead so, it’s just the two of us.”

Seven pairs of sympathetic eyes met his. Orlando’s eyes were cast down at his plate.

“Sorry to hear that, mate,” Dominic said. “Was it recent or something?”

Billy sighed and leaned back. He backed himself into this corner. He should’ve stopped at ‘just my sister.’ “No, wasn’t all that recent.”

“Well,” Elijah prodded. “Then when?”

“I like apple pie,” Orlando blurted out. “Don’t you like pie, Sean?” he asked, turning to Bean.

“I want to hear. Come on, Billy,” Elijah asked again, ignoring the death looks Orlando threw him.

Billy glared at the young American. “Me dad died of lung cancer, I think I was fourteen. And me mum died nine months later when I was fifteen of a heart attack. I found her, sixteen years ago tomorrow. Does that satisfy you?” He stood up and quickly left the restaurant.

Orlando hit Elijah upside the head. “Couldn’t drop it, could you?”

“I didn’t know!” Elijah said as he rubbed his head.

“He didn’t want to talk about it, I think that much was obvious,” Stuart said as he leaned back in his chair. “Poor guy. That’s rough.”

“Someone should go after him,” Astin said. “Peter will kill us if we lose him.”

“I’ll go,” Dominic said abruptly. He stood up and pushed his chair back. “Pip and Merry, you know,” he said with a shrug before running off after Billy.

He found Billy sitting out the restaurant, his back against the wall. “Billy?”

Billy looked up. “Sorry if I ruined everything.”

Dominic knelt down. “Nah. You didn’t ruin anything.”

Elijah appeared. “Billy. I’m sorry, man. Really.”

Billy looked at the young American. He smiled slightly. “Don’t worry about, Lij. It had to come out at some point. Guess it’s cause the anniversary is tomorrow.”

“I’m really sorry,” Elijah said again.

Billy rose to his feet. “It’s ok. I think I’ll just go home now.”

Orlando pulled him into a hug. “Sorry it came out that way, mate.”

“Thanks for keeping quiet, Or.” Billy released Orlando and turned to Elijah. “It’s ok, mate. It had to come out sooner or later.”

Elijah nodded and he flung himself into Billy’s arms.

“We’re turning this kid British,” Dominic said as he shook his head. “Come on, Bill. I’ll take you home.”

“I’m fine, Dom,” Billy said as he let go of Elijah.

“Don’t care. Merry takes care of his Pippin. I’ll see you two later,” he called over his shoulder as he led Billy away.

Billy didn’t fight Dominic. “Thanks, mate,” he said as he got into the car, allowing Dominic to drive.

Dominic shrugged. “We’re mates and...ithinkiloveyou,” he muttered.

“What’s that?” Billy asked. He thought he heard Dominic say he loved him.

“Ithinkiloveyou,” Dominic muttered again.

Billy smiled slightly. “I think I love you, too, Dom.”

Dominic smiled as he started the car. “Really?”

Billy nodded. “I don’t say that often, you know.” He looked down. “In case that person...you know...leaves.”

Dominic reached over and grabbed Billy’s hand. “I won’t leave.”
