Chapter Twenty-Four

“Uncle Jack!” Lucas said as he opened the front door.”

“Little man!” Jackson pulled Lucas in for a hug and ruffled his hair. “How old are you now? Four?”

“Uncle Jack, I’m eight. You were at my party.” Lucas crossed his arms over his chest and rolled his eyes.

“They grow up so fast,” Jackson said to two men behind him, Danny Nichols and Walter Polson. “So, you gonna let us in?”

“Little Scot, who’s at the door?” Dom asked as he walked toward the front door. “Oh, hey, Jackson. Little Scot, go get Uncle Billy.”

Lucas nodded and took off.

“Come on in. Danny, glad you could make it,” Dom said as he shook hands with the three men.

“Glad to be here. Beautiful country. Just wish I were here under better circumstances.”

“Me, too. Believe me.”

Jackson sat himself on the couch and propped his feet up on the coffee table. “Aren’t you going to offer us a drink?” He smiled up at Dom.

“Get your feet off of that.” Dom shoved Jackson’s feet off the table. “You’re going to give the kid ideas.”

“Does he know yet?” Jackson asked as Dom sat down in a nearby chair.

Dom shook his head. “How would we tell him?”

“You’re going to have to. He’ll probably have to testify,” Walter said as he sat beside Jackson. “He’s old enough to be consulted on this.”

“Who’s old enough?” Lucas asked as he ran towards the couch.

“You. You’re old enough to make us all lunch. I’ll take a bowl of soup. Dan? What would you like?”

Lucas rolled his eyes. “That was very funny.”

Billy pulled another chair over beside Dom’s. “Luke, come sit with me. We’re all here to talk, remember?”

Lucas ran over and sat on the floor at Billy’s feet. “What are we talking about again?”

Jackson smiled over at Lucas. “Well, Lukes, you know your uncle here wants to adopt you, right?”

Lucas nodded. “We’ve been waiting forever.” He thought for a moment before a huge smile spread across his face. He stood up and ran over to Jackson’s side. “Is it for real finally?”

“Not yet, Lukes. We have a bit of a problem.” Jackson looked over at Billy. “Want me to tell him or you?”

Billy shrugged. He started picking at the chair until Dom reached over and took his hand. “You can tell him.”

Jackson sighed. “Well, Lucas. See, your father, your real father that is, he...he wants you back.”

Lucas climbed onto the couch beside Jackson. “What do you mean?”

“Luke, he doesn’t want your uncle to adopt you. He wants you to come live with him.”

“Do I have to? I want to stay here.” Lucas hopped off the couch and ran towards Billy. Billy pulled Lucas into his lap.

“I know you do, and right now you can, but some things are going to change.”

“Like what?” Lucas asked, leaning his head on Billy’s shoulder.

“Like there’ll be a lot of people stopping by the house and asking you questions. You may have to miss a few days of school, and...”

“I have to stop staying over, Little Scot,” Dom said as he released Billy’s hand so he could ruffle Lucas’ hair. “I’m going to be in Manchester for a while.”

“You have leave?” Lucas looked up at Billy before turning to the three lawyers. “Uncle Dom has to leave?”

“I’m sorry, Lucas, but he does. It’s just for a little while though,” Danny said as he smiled at the boy. “It just makes things easier, do you understand?”

“Not really, but I’ll get to stay with Uncle Billy?”

“Hopefully, Luke.” Walter shifted slightly in his seat. “You may have to go into a room and tell some people where you’d like to stay.”

“Here.” Lucas crossed his arms over his chest.

“Exactly. You tell them you want to stay with your Uncle Billy, but you will have to see your real father.”

“Do I have to?” Lucas asked he looked up at Billy, who had remained rather quiet throughout the whole discussion.

“Yeah, Boo. You’ll have to see him.” He lightly brushed Lucas’ hair. “I don’t really want you to, but...” He shrugged.

“How about that drink, Jackson?” Dom asked, breaking the tension.

“Sounds good. I’ll help you get it,” Jackson said as he

“Jack, we’re really tired. Jet-lag and what not. We’re going to head back to our hotel. We’ll see you in the morning?” Walter asked as he and Danny stood up.

“Yes, of course. Thank you for coming.”

Danny and Walter nodded as they shook hands with Billy, Dom, and Jackson.

“We’ll see ourselves out.”

After the two Americans left, Dom and Jackson headed into the kitchen, leaving Billy and Lucas alone to talk.

“So, when are you planning on leaving?” Jackson asked as he leaned against the counter.

Dom shrugged. “Soon. The sooner, the better. We don’t want to make it harder than it already is.” He pulled four sodas out of the refrigerator and handed one to Jackson. “If that’s even possible.”

“Luke’s a smart kid. He seems to understand, at least a little bit. I know you don’t want to go, but...”

Dom held up his hand. “Jackson, look, I understand. I want Billy to keep Lucas as much as anybody. I love them both enough to step back.”

Jackson opened his soda. “Good to know.” He drank a few sips of his soda before putting it down. “Look, Dom, I’ve never seen Billy as happy with any woman as he is with you. And I have to thank you for that. I’ve known Billy since we were six, seven, and I’ve seen him at his lowest and at his highest. Having both you and Lucas has been his highest.”

Dom had been looking at his soda can through most of Jackson’s speech. Jackson had been one of the first non-Rings people they had told and he had been the happiest. “Thanks, Jack, really. I know you and Billy are best mates and all.” Dom looked up. “Trust me when I say that your opinion means a lot to me.”

Jackson smiled. “If you get sick of your parents, I have a place in London you’re welcome to stay at.”

Dom nodded just as Lucas bounded into the room.

“Uncle Dom, you guys left a long time ago and we’re thirsty.”

“Sorry, Little Scot.” He handed Lucas the remaining cans. “Here you go.”

“I don’t want you to go, Uncle Dom.” Lucas dropped both sodas on the ground and jumped into Dom’s arms.

“I know, Little Scot, but I have to.” He kissed the side of Lucas’ head before letting the boy go. He knelt down in front of Lucas. “I won’t be gone forever. I’ll be back. And I’m not leaving right now, ok?” Dom picked up the two dropped soda cans. He handed one to Lucas. “Give this to your dad, ok?”

Lucas nodded and ran back into the living room as Dom rose to his feet and winked at Jackson.

“You have to be the---”

“Cheekiest,” Dom supplied, wriggling his eyebrows.

“---Cheekiest Brit I know.”

Billy walked into the kitchen at that point, his face wet with soda. “You are dead.”

Dom ran from the kitchen, Billy hot on his tail.

Lucas giggled and looked up at Jackson. “Does he really have to go? We have fun when he’s here.”

Jackson ran his hand over Lucas’ hair. “It’ll make things easier, Luke. You have to understand that.”

Lucas scowled slightly but nodded. “I do. It’ll just be different. Dad’s happy when he’s here.”

“I can see that,” Jackson commented as Billy and Dom ran back through kitchen.

Billy managed to tackle Dom onto the couch. He pinned the younger man down. “You’re going to regret that, Monaghan.”

Dom smiled slyly up at Billy. “Oh? Am I now? Right now? We don’t usually like an audience, love.”

Jackson shook his head and laughed. “Want to go to run some errands with me, Luke?”

Lucas ran into the living just as Billy was pulling himself off Dom. “Dad, can I go on some errands with Uncle Jack?”

Billy looked up at Jackson who winked. “Sure, Boo. Don’t give him any trouble.” He kissed Lucas on the cheek. “Have fun.”

Jackson walked with Lucas toward the front door. “Don’t hurt yourselves,” he said as ushered Lucas out the door.

“And he said I’m cheeky,” Dom said as he sat up and tucked his legs under him. “He’s the cheeky one.”

“You both are,” Billy said as he sat back on other side of the couch and stretched his legs out.

Dom looked over at Billy. He gave the Scot his cheekiest grin before crawling over to him. When his face was just inches from Billy he said, “And that’s why you love me.”

Billy could offer no argument as Dom now had his tongue buried deep in his mouth.
