Dom unlocked the front door to Billy’s place in Glasgow. It was pouring out and he was getting soaked. He grateful, not for the first time, that Billy had made him a spare key to the place. He was surprised to find the place dark and seemingly empty.
“Billy? You here, mate?” Dom flipped the light switch. His eyes widened. Billy’s normally immaculate place was littered in empty beer bottles and discarded pizza boxes. There were empty containers of Chinese food all over the coffee table and there were papers scattered all over the floor. There was a path of tissues leading from the living room to Billy’s bedroom
Dom made his way down the hallway to the bedroom. He slowly opened the door. “Billy?” There was no one there. Just like the living room, the bedroom was a mess. The sheets had been hastily thrown to the side. There were clothes scattered all over the floor.
He heard the sound of water splashing coming from Billy’s bathroom. “You’d better be decent, mate,” Dom muttered to himself as he slowly opened the bathroom door.
Billy lay in his bathtub with his head against the wall. He appeared to be sleeping.
“Billy?” Dom said, hesitantly. He reached over and touched Billy’s arm. The Scot was hot to the touch. “Billy. Mate, wake up.”
Billy slowly opened his eyes and turned his head toward Dom. “I’m freezing,” he whispered.
Dom placed a finger in the water. “No wonder. This water is ice cold. How long have you been in here?” He turned around and grabbed a towel. “Come on. Stand up.”
Billy slowly stood up and Dom noticed he was shaking. He also noticed how pale the older man was. Billy’s breathing came in rasps and he had a deep cough.
Dom wrapped the towel around him and helped him out of the tub. “Poor, Bills. You have a cold?”
Billy shook his head. “Flu,” he said hoarsely.
Dom lead Billy back into his bedroom and laid him onto the bed. “I’ll get you a blanket and some clothes, ok, mate?”
Billy nodded and held his head. “What are you doing here, Dom?”
“No one’s heard from you in, like, forever, so they sent me to make sure you hadn’t taken off without telling anyone.” He handed Billy a pair of pyjama pants and boxers. “Your sister called too. Said she knocked for a good twenty minutes.”
“Damn it,” Billy whispered as he pulled on the pants. He picked up a shirt that lay discarded on the bed and threw it over his head.
“She also wasn’t too happy that I have a key and she doesn’t,” Dom said as he put several blankets over the man. “She can swear a mean blue streak. Quite impressive.”
“Would you want your sister walking in and finding you naked in the bath?”
“I don’t have a sister, Bills.” Dom walked back into the bathroom and got Billy a glass of water. “Here. Drink this.”
After downing the whole glass in one gulp, Billy handed the glass back to Dom. “If you had one.”
Dom shrugged. “I guess not. What’s up with the living room? That stuff isn’t good when you’re sick.”
“I was depressed,” Billy said as he pulled the blankets up higher.
“About what, Bills?” Dom asked as he sat on the side of Billy’s bed, ignoring the fact he was wet.
Billy shrugged. “Ali broke up with me.”
“Oh.” Dom stood up and began to pick up the clothes that covered the bedroom floor. “Any reason?”
“Found someone else. Look, Dom, can you call my sister for me?” He watched as Dom picked up the phone and begin to dial his sister’s number. “Wait. Better yet. Send her a rose.”
“Just one rose?” Dom said, raising an eyebrow.
“It’s from when we were kids. Before they died, when our Mum and Dad fought, they would make up by giving each other one rose.”
Dom nodded and grabbed the phone book. The man at the flower shop was just as surprised by the order as Dom had been, but when he heard who was ordering, the man immediately went to work.
“All ordered,” Dom said as he hung up the phone and smiled at Billy
“Good.” Billy placed his hand on his head again. “Feels like my heads been trampled by a thousand horses.”
Dom reached over and placed his hand on Billy’s forehead. “You’re burning up, Bills.”
“Thanks for the newsflash.”
“Why was the water in the bath cold?”
Billy shrugged again. “I guess I feel asleep. It was warm when I got in there.” He yawned.
“Why don’t you get some sleep, Bill?”
Billy nodded, yawned again, and drifted off into a deep sleep.
Dom stayed by Billy’s side for a while. He changed into some dry clothes of Billy’s. He fielded all the phone calls that came in and dealt with Margaret’s tearful plea for information on her brother.
“He’s fine...Just has the flu, I’d say...Don’t worry, I’m taking care of him...Yeah, he told me. So she found someone else, eh?...Oh, he found someone else? Who?...Well, he didn’t tell me either. Why would he be depressed if he’s found someone else?...Probably someone he can’t get...I’ll call you, ok, Mags?...Ok, good-bye.”
Dom hung up the phone and walked into the kitchen. He dug through a drawer and found a piece of paper and a Sharpie marker. He wrote a quick note to Billy on the paper. He searched the kitchen and found it practically empty. There was no more paper so he wrote out a grocery list on his hand with the same marker. He grabbed his key and left the house.
Billy woke up and found Dom was no longer sitting on his bed. He still felt weak, but he crawled out of bed anyways. He padded down the hallway and into the kitchen. Sitting on the counter was a note from Dom.
Billy,
Went to you get you some food, mate. Should’ve called one of us, ya know? Mags tells me it was you who found someone else? You’d better tell me when I get back, mate.
Later,
Dom
Billy picked up the Sharpie and wrote a quick reply before shuffling back to his room. He collapsed on the bed and drifted back to sleep.
Dom returned a few hours later, both arms loaded with groceries. He kicked the door shut and walked into the kitchen. As he put them away, he noticed a something had been added to the bottom of his note.
In Billy’s fever-ridden scribble was one sentence: The someone is you.
Dom dropped the carton of eggs in his hands. He turned his gaze from the note to the door of Billy’s room. “Well, that’s...that’s good to know.”
