The last words from his mouth were, “I love you and I‘m coming home.” But everyone knew who they were meant for, knew they were meant for Dominic, not Ali.

All these long years, he’d denied himself the one thing he wanted. He denied himself true love, and still wasn’t sure why he had made the choice he did. Ali. Sweet, beautiful, Ali. What a wonderful mother she made, a lovely wife as well. Billy, Billy had made the perfect father. And they had beautiful children. Children with Billy’s green eyes and mouse-like smile, with Ali’s soft lips and fair skin.

But all this time, Billy had wanted to see his future with Dominic. Dom. Dommie. His Dommie, though that was never truly so. He had the chance. Dom offered himself to Billy willingly, confessed his undying love. Gave his heart, his soul, and his very life to Billy. And Billy had given it back. Thrown it back in Dominic’s face.

Because Billy wanted normal. He wanted a beautiful wife, and beautiful children, with a beautiful cottage in the highlands. And he got it. He got exactly what he wanted, and became the emptiest man in existence.

Dom had smiled and hugged him at the wedding. Proud to be Billy’s best man… Or so it seemed. But when Billy had found Dom, bleeding and broken on the floor, he wasn’t proud then. He wasn’t ashamed, or sorry either. He knew what was coming, but he wasn’t afraid for it. He embraced it, he embraced the release.

And as Billy cried and rocked with Dominic in his arms, saying he was sorry, not caring about the liquid copper that stained his suit and hands, Dom said his last words.

“I’ll be waiting Bills. Always waiting for you to come back home to me.”

Billy sobbed and placed a gentle kiss on unyielding lips, soaking up the last of the warmth. He didn’t even hear the screams.

Billy was laid to rest next to Dominic, and on his grave it read:
