Title: Strong
Rated: PG
Pairing: BB/DM
Summary: "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down..."
Author's notes: Written for the
contrelamontre poetry challenge. Poem used: Grin, by Robert Service. Thanks to the other half of my pervy slash brain(whose fault it is entirely that I even got into RPS in the first place) for a quick read through and help with a title and summary. Not a fluffy fic.
Time: 27 minutes

There are times when Billy thinks about his past. He tries not to think about his mother and father, their deaths in sterile hospital rooms.
So close together, a one two punch. His gran tried to fill their void, she did well, he loves her, appreciates her for finishing what his parents started. But she was never the same as his parents.
He had to be strong for Margaret then. He was always her big brother, there for her. A shoulder for her to cry on. After the second funeral, he never let either of them see him cry again. He had to be strong. If they ever heard his quiet sobs at night, neither of them ever said a word.
Dom tries to understand, but he doesn't. Both of his parents are still alive. Billy is happy for Dom, two loving parents who are around to see their son's success. Inside though, Billy is secretely jealous. He wishes that his parents' were still around to see his success, that he could call them up whenever he feels like it.
Not sitting in front of matching gravestones trying to picture what their voices sound like after all these years. Billy reckons he has their voices down pretty good in his head, but he isn't sure about that. He was only 14 the last time he heard his mother's voice.
He wishes that Dom could be here with him right now. Sitting next to his Gran, waiting for his sister to get there. The doctors say that there is nothing they can do for her; she lived a good life; time to let her go. Billy can't say that he was surprised when he received a call from the nursing home that his Gran was now in the hospital. A cold turned into pneumonia they said.
Billy was glad that he had visited her over Christmas and that his sister had been able to make it as well. She had gone downhill faster than the doctors had expected. Now he was just waiting for his sister to get there. So they could take her off life support.
A knock on the door comes just as Billy stifles a sob. His sister is standing there, eyes puffy and swollen. Billy is up and halfway across the room before the door closes. They stand there for a second, staring at each other, Billy sees lines he hadn't seen before on her face. They're getting older, he wonders what she sees on his face now.
The moment is broken by a fierce hug, she clings to him and he to her. Margaret goes over to the bed and looks down at their Gran. Wispy white hair is fanned out on the pillow, she strokes it gently and nods. Billy understands and clicks the call bell.
It's time. The doctors remove the oxygen and Billy watches as the blip, blip, blip, gets steadly slower until it is a faint whine.
Now there is only them left. Two children who lost their parents much too soon. Margaret cries into Billy's shoulder. But Billy holds it together like before.
He'll let himself break down when he gets home. Dom should be back by then, Billy hopes.
Dom will be strong for him.
