I boxed up all the memories, the photos and the knick-knacks you didn’t take with you when you left. They’re up in my closet, top shelf, to the right.

I tossed out your toothbrush three days after you walked away. And your extra pair of shoes? Yeah, it only took me a week to get sick of them sitting by the door, just waiting for you to come back and slip them on. The homeless man by the bridge down on 34th and 3rd? He says thank you.

You left five shirts and three pairs of pants as well as numerous mismatched socks. I folded them all neatly and set them out on the balcony. I hope it rains.

I hope it fucking pours.

Because I know you’re not coming back this time. I know you’re gone and you’ve made up your mind. So I hope the sky blackens and the clouds open up, dumping buckets on you and your memories.

I hope you hear the thunder and remember the murmur of my voice in the darkness. I hope you hear the patter of the raindrops on the roof of whatever hotel you’re staying in and remember that time we made love in that stupid field.

And I hope you know that it’s some god crying for what was lost.

Because I sure as hell am not.

You made up your mind, you made your choice.

And I’m going to hold you to it.
