I was sitting in my car in New Zealand the first time I knew I loved Dom. He had been my best mate for months, but I knew our friendship was like none other I had ever had. I had always thought there would be something grand to mark such a defining moment ... fireworks, trumpets, a shot from Cupid’s bow ... but the realization came with little fanfare.

We had just gotten in the car preparing to leave when Dom spotted Orlando. He got out with a promise to not be long and a joke about Orlando's hat that left me chuckling and shaking my head. Dom gave me a wink, complete with a cheeky grin and closed the door. I watched, still smiling, as he walked a few feet in front of the car and met up with Orlando.

I sat in my car and watched Dom talking to Orli, hands waving and gesturing wildly as they always did when Dom was talking. It was like the muscles in his arms and hands were attached to the muscles of his tongue, one simply couldn't work without the other. Astin calls Dom 'hyper', while others call him 'wild', but I've always preferred 'animated'.

Sitting there with a smile on my face and in my heart, a thought occurred to me. I never wanted to leave New Zealand. I never wanted to leave Dom. I watched as Dom threw himself to the ground, leaving Orli to stare down at him in a fit of giggles. I watched as Dom hopped back up, laughing, and I knew he was reenacting Elijah's latest prank on Viggo. I watched and I suddenly realized that I watch Dom a lot, but I also realized that I never wanted there to be a time when I couldn't do exactly that. Dom made me smile just by being, just by existing.

My smile faltered as I realized that one day I would no longer live only minutes from and spend every day with my best mate. That was the moment Dom turned around and looked at me. He held a finger up to let me know he would just be a minute longer and I couldn't help but notice how his smile filled his eyes. Dom's happiness and love of life was a raw emotion, untainted, like the love of a child. Little butterflies took flight in my stomach as I looked into his eyes, their little wings fluttering against my heart. Funny how I had never noticed them before, had they always been there? A memory came to mind then. I had once asked my gran how I would know when I found the person I was supposed to be with forever. She simply said they would be my best friend.

When Dom got back in the car, he was oblivious to everything and rambled on with some story Orlando had shared with him. I turned to him, placing a hand over his and he stopped talking. He just sat there and looked at me with a questioning smile as I looked back. When he asked what was on my mind I simply told him that he was my best friend, before starting the car and leaving the lot.

The first time Dom kissed me I didn't close my eyes. I watched Dom close his own eyes and nervously touch my face with his fingers. His lips were soft and his mouth was warm. When he turned away, blushing and muttering an apology, I grabbed his wrist and pulled him back to me. I didn't watch the first time I kissed Dom.

It was raining the first day I told Dom I loved him. I stood in my doorway and watched him tempting a very wet and cold puppy from beneath my car while a little girl with an umbrella watched hopefully. After a slip that landed Dom on his backside and quite a bit of coaxing, he handed the scared pup over to the smiling girl and received a hug in thanks. He watched to make sure the little girl made it home safely and gave a wave to her mother, watching from their home. When he turned back to me, there was no look of dismay at being soaked through to the bone, just that special Dom smile that shown from the tips of his hair to the end of his toes. I stepped into the cold rain and pulled him to me, watching rivulets of rain stream down his skin as I whispered, "I love you". I covered his mouth with my own and we kissed in the rain, like some bad romantic cliche'. Moments later I removed his wet clothes and warmed his body. I watched as he moaned my name before collapsing against me and stroked his back as he whispered "I love you too".

I was in an airport the first time I really had to say goodbye. We both knew the reasons he should go, and made plans to see each other regularly. He told me that he didn't want to go, but I told him that he needed to. I promised him things wouldn't change and watched him walk through the gate with a piece of my good luggage and all of my heart.

It was a warm day in London the day I broke Dom's heart. Things seldom go as planned and finding time for each other had become difficult. One or both of us was always working, but we held on as long as we could. Longer than we should have some were saying. There was never a time when we called the relationship off, we just drifted apart. I thought Dom was dating someone, so when a friend introduced a friend to me, I started dating her. Dom knew nothing about her and thought he was picking only me up at the airport that day. Dom went out of his way to welcome her and we never spoke about it. We went from lovers to friends without a word being spoken, but I could see the hurt in his eyes. His smiles didn't touch his eyes anymore, not when they were directed at me that is. Dom hadn't been dating anyone.

I was in a hotel room the day ultimatum's were given and our friendship teetered on the brink. She was there too, and tried to leave to give us privacy, but Dom made her stay. Dom was hurt that I had pulled away from his touch, something I had never done. I watched as Dom told her that he loved me and that he knew she loved me too. He told me that I had to make a decision, because he couldn't be just my friend anymore. He told me that we were either best friends or nothing at all and I understood what he meant. He left, tears staining his cheeks and slammed the door behind him. She didn't ask questions. She laid her hand over mine and told me that she was not what I needed and that we were only allowed one best friend in this lifetime. I hugged her goodbye and helped put her bags in the taxi, thinking all women must know what my gran had told me so many years ago.

Billy closed his journal and placed it in the desk drawer. A scream and chuckle from Dom made him look out the open window over the desk. He caught a glimpse of a very wet Dom being chased across the yard. A curly, blonde-haired, three year old in a lavender dress followed suit, wielding a water pistol and giggling, "Daddy stop, I won't shoot, promise!" Dom laughed as if he had used that ploy more than once in his own youth and kept running just slow enough that she could still squirt him. Billy had been watching them as he wrote. He stood and walked to the open patio doors and stopped to watch again, thankful for the gifts in his life. He had to laugh when the water pistol was replaced by the garden hose.

Billy walked out as Dom was writhing on the ground laughing and sputtering water as she skipped around him, still wielding the hose. "I warned you not to buy that water pistol for her!" Billy called to Dom from a safe, water-free distance.

"Da!" Her little voice rang out, as she came to a halt, little eyes shining on Billy.

Billy noticed that she was wet too, with little mud splatters on the hem of her dress. "You two are soaked! We're going to be late because I'm going to have to change her again while you get yourself dry and changed."

Billy moved to scoop her up and go about the task when he saw her smile grow into a wide, Dom-like grin. He barely got, "Don't you dare!" out before a stream of cold water hit him square in the face. Then she was off again, skipping and giggling through the yard. "You little devil, you're going to pay for that!" Billy laughed and took off after her as she ran away squealing with delight and yelling for her daddy to help her. Dom picked up the discarded water pistol and took off to join the fun, the three of them filling the yard with squeals and giggles.
