The beer was the same, the sandwiches were the same, the names were the same, but the persons were different. Billy had the same green eyes, Dom the same crazy accessories. They laughed about the same jokes, talked about the same stories, but inside they weren’t the same.

There were no dull moments, no lulls in conversation. Old friends always have something to talk about. The weather, families, anything but relationships. Some things can’t be brought up.

The cheque came. Billy and Dom both reached for it, and for a brief second Billy’s hand rested upon Dom’s. Dom swallowed slowly.

*

The night was getting late and feet came so early. Dom wanted to stay, didn’t want to return to an empty bed even if it was only for a few hours. He ordered another beer. Elijah crawled out of the booth, desperately trying to make it to the bathroom before he threw up on the floor.

“We should get Elijah and go. It’s late,” Billy said, reluctantly pushing his beer away.

Dom nodded, doing the same, and reached for the keys at the same moment as Billy. Billy’s hand rested on top of Dom’s. They smiled shyly at each other.

*

The room was dark. They whispered even though no one was around to hear what they said. Clothes lay scattered across the room, discarded without another thought.

Their laughs were stifled. Dom placed his fingers over Billy’s smiling mouth to quiet him down. Billy opened his mouth and bit them playfully.

“Ow!” Dom whispered, snatching his fingers away.

“Why are we whispering?”

“Because. The walls can hear us; and you’re my secret.” Dom leaned down and captured Billy’s mouth again. He slid his cold toes up Billy’s bare legs and pressed his fingers gently in the flesh of Billy’s side.

*

The bill was paid. All stories told, all news caught up on. Minutes were wasting away to the moment they said goodbye until the next annual lunch where pleasantries would be exchanged and watches checked repeatedly.

Dom offered to ride with Billy to his hotel. Billy protested at first but knew there was no persuading Dom otherwise. He had that look about him.

Billy hailed the cab. Dom went to open the door for Billy the same time Billy grabbed the handle himself. Dom’s fingers landed in between Billy’s, just a simple movement away from being linked with his own.

*

The rain poured around them. The umbrella was large, but not enough to cover two grown men. Cabs raced past, splashing water onto their already drenched legs.

“It’s freezing! Isn’t there a cab in this city that’ll stop instead of splashing us?” Billy shifted from foot to foot, attempting to warm himself.

Dom spotted a cab coming and waved at it frantically. It slowed, stopping a few feet ahead of them.

Billy grabbed the door handle the same time as Dom. Dom laced his fingers through Billy’s as they opened the door and pulled Billy in on top of him.

*

The rain beat upon them. They stumbled out of the cab, barely able to pay the driver in their anticipation before Dom dragged Billy to the ground in a pile of limbs. Their kisses were as wet as the rain. They couldn’t see anything, eyes closed tightly as droplets accumulated on their lashes.

Hands blindly and deftly found their destinations, warm and wet flesh beneath heavy and wetter clothes. Billy smeared mud across Dom’s face, and Dom trailed mud through Billy’s hair. Neither noticed. Billy bit Dom’s shoulder as he came, but their moans were carried off by the wind.

*

When they reached the hotel, Billy asked Dom up to his room for a quick drink. Dom said yes.

In the elevator Billy stood against one wall, Dom faced him on the other. Annoying piano music floated out of the speakers. Billy stared at his feet. Dom watched.

Billy jumped when the elevator dinged at their floor. Dom followed him out to the hotel door where Billy dropped his key. Dom absently placed his hand on the small of Billy’s back and bent down to pick it up. They both wrapped their hands around it and straightened suddenly, bodies close.

*

Dom threw Billy against the mirrored elevator wall. He looked over Billy’s shoulder and saw green eyes reflected across the small space and his own tongue darting into Billy’s ear.

“Dom…Cameras…” Billy breathed against Dom’s neck.

“We’re not doing anything…yet.”

Dom slipped his hands underneath Billy’s shirt, brushing his fingers lightly over Billy’s chest and stomach. Billy reached his hand above his head, clawing at the reflective surface. His fingers slid down, smearing the pristine glass.

Billy turned his head and captured Dom’s mouth in a kiss, using his free hand to push the button for the highest floor possible.

*

The words echoed in Dom’s ears. “Always love you”, “Best friend”, “I’m sorry”.

New ones were thrown at him as he beat the elevator button. “Don’t run away”, “Stop”, “Don’t do this.”

The elevator doors shut, separating Dom from Billy completely. The elevator crawled up ten floors, and with each one Dom felt more smothered. He ran out as soon as the doors reopened, gasping for air.

He collapsed on the carpet and pulled his knees to his chest. The gold doors were fascinating, and he watched as families and couples walked through repeatedly. All strangers. No one he knew.

*

Billy’s hand shook as he poured scotch into the glass. Amber liquid splashed over the rim. Dom placed his hand over Billy’s, steadying him. He placed the bottle on the counter and Dom intertwined their fingers. Billy refused to look up, but Dom lifted Billy’s chin until they were eye to eye.

He stepped closer, trapping their clasped hands between their bodies. Billy trembled as he chewed his lip.

“Don’t do that,” Dom whispered.

“Why?”

“Because you have such beautiful lips.”

“Okay.”

Dom tilted forward slowly, eyes never leaving Billy’s. Billy pressed forward, closing the remaining gap between their lips.
