Title: Teddy Bear
Author: Robin Gurl
Beta:
glamoursnipe (wheee! Her computer is working again! :D)
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: BB/DM
Summary: Painful memories are re-awakened by accident when Dom drags Billy to a build-a-bear.
Warnings: Hurt/Comfort, slight AU (I just changed an age, is all. Makes sense when you read it.)
Notes: o_o; ok seriously this was supposed to be a silly fic, then this idea popped me upside the head and wouldn't leave me alone. *hugs Billy*
Disclaimer: I own Troy. This never happened to my knowledge. :)
EDIT: Ok, ok, what interview does the emotion icon come from? I really want to see it now or at least get the full picture. :D LOL. O_o;
Two big blue eyes were staring at him, making sure to look pitiful. To help make this even more effective, both of the other person's hands were up to his chest in a begging position.
"Dom, you are too old to have stuffed animals. No I'm not doing this."
"You are NEVER too old to have stuffed animals." The other man informed him, bending down to retrieve one of the lifeless carcasses of the so-called bears. It hung limp in the air staring at him, just above the animal he saw Dom still giving him the puppy-dog look. "You should get one to!"
"No way in hell, Dom. If you want to make a fool out of yourself, you are doing it on your own." Billy took the skin of the bear and dropped it back in the pile. "It's so vile anyway, this place Build-a-Bear. What child wants to come in and have to pick up the skin of a teddy bear or some other animal and fill it?"
"Those kids, apparently." Dom replied back eyeing the mob of children in line to stuff their bear.
"Soon they are going to start thinking babies are made that way."
Dom snorted and almost went face first into a pile of dogs. He stood up to his full height, a brown dog in his hands. Billy watched curiously as Dom ran his hands through the fur and looked into the dog's eyes. Pronouncing it apparently good enough, Dom hung the stuff-less dog over his arm. "Well I am doing this dog. Think I'll name it Billy."
"You are not naming a stuffed animal after me."
"Why not? At least this Billy will cuddle with me."
Billy's cheeks burned red. "Fuck off."
"It's true."
"I cuddle you a lot." Billy exclaimed, crossing his arms.
"Liar. I cuddle you, Bills. There is a big difference." Dom retorted, getting in line. "So did you have some sort of giant tragedy that made teddy bears uncool?"
"No, I didn't, thank you very much."
"Ohh do you already have one? Can I see it?"
"No, I don't have one either."
"I feel sorry for your future kids, Billy. What are you going to do when they ask for a stuffed animal? Tell them no?"
"If I join you will you just leave it be?" Billy pleaded, ready to drown Dom in the bin of animal skins. Dom saw the death glance and nodded silently.
He stood back to allow Billy the chance to look at the animals. Whatever the reason for his friend's crabbiness, it must have been personal. Dom was curious as to why he saw Billy's eyes tear up for a second before the wetness was gone.
Billy rummaged through the bins and finally picked up a light brown bear. Dom noticed how carefully Billy was being with the bear. Time seemed to freeze as the older man stared into the eyes of his new companion, many painful memories burst open. He shook his head to clear it before turning back to Dom. "Let's go."
When the two of them got up to the lady who was sitting at the pump that let out the stuffing, she stared at them wide eyed. Billy couldn't tell if it was because she recognized them or if it was because they were well over the age to be here in the first place.
She smiled politely though and handed both of them a tiny satin heart. Billy took it with a confused glance looking at Dom. "Just give it a kiss or recite that promise up there." He looked to where she was pointing and saw a three lined "promise" that said something about love it always and what not. Embarrassed he just kissed it lightly and quickly handed it back to her. Dom on the other hand made it a spectacle, twirling around in one spot and declaring love to it before handing it back, making their helper giggle.
"I apologize about him, he forgets his age sometimes."
"That’s what this place is for. You two aren't the only people who have come in too old to play with animals. Sometimes it just helps having something or someone there when it hurts the most, ya know?" She took Billy's heart and placed it in bear before putting the empty skin up on the air pump. He watched curiously as her foot sat on a pedal like contraption and she pumped it. Air wooshed out of the giant container of fluff and he watched as the bear came to life. As soon as the bear had been stuffed completely she pulled it off the "stuffer" and got a needle and thread. After sewing it up she handed it to Billy. "There ya go! Alright," She said to Dom. "You're next."
*~*
10 minutes later the duo were at the dressing table. Dom was already scoping out the clothes, Billy was just standing there quietly. "So what are you going to dress your bear in?"
"You never said we had to dress it, Dom."
"The wall of clothes didn't give you the hint?" Dom just smiled sweetly before eying a purple shirt and running over to pick it up. He came back with a small pair of jeans as well before sitting in the child-sized chair to dress his bear. "I'm so glad your style isn't hard to find."
Billy didn't want to admit that he felt somewhat glad that Dom was naming this dog after him. He sighed before thinking of what he was going to do with this bear he'd stuffed and "made". Maybe Dom had the right idea after all, you weren't ever too old to love a stuffed toy. "Think I'll name it after you."
Dom glanced up quietly, not sure how to reply to that. He watched as Billy walked over to the clothes picking up a pair of dark blue jeans, a red t-shirt, arm bands, and a pair of tennis shoes. "You don't have to, Billy."
The other man shrugged as he leaned against the wall and started to dress the bear. After he was finished he held it out to Dom. "Well?"
"Looks just like me! Here you are as well." Dom replied, holding out the dog that he'd dressed just like Billy.
*~*
The two stuffed animals were sitting on the bed that they were sharing; they looked happy sitting beside each other. Dom had sat them up earlier before calling Billy in to look at his work of art.
As Billy stood there staring at the stuffed animals, he felt Dom lean into his embrace. He hugged the other man from behind, sighing contently. However, he continued to stare silently at the toy, not missing the real reason he'd chosen this particular bear.
Tears welled up in his eyes as the painful memory from his childhood reappeared full force.
"Here! Take him with you! He'll keep you and Daddy company!" A little boy no older than six or seven proudly handed over a light brown stuffed bear that was missing an eye and a part of its ear.
"Billy, thank you so much!" His mother exclaimed, kneeling down to pull him into a hug. "I'll make sure to buckle him up as well."
"Are you two sure you will be fine here by yourself?"
Another person appeared behind Billy, placing her hands on his shoulders. "Don't worry mum, we'll be fine. You and Dad have fun."
The two adults waved after giving their children a hug one last time before walking out the door.. "They shouldn't be going out in this weather," She whispered to herself.
Billy turned to his older sister Margret with a big grin on his face, "Troy will keep them safe, don't worry."
"Of course he will!" She replied, smiling.
Troy nor his parents ever returned. Troy hadn't protected his parents from death.
Dom glanced up, worried that Billy was being so quiet. He twisted in Billy's arms to see tears streaming down the older man's cheeks. "Billy? Oh God, what is it?"
Billy blinked his eyes, noticing for the first time that he was crying. This time, though, he didn't want to wipe them away. He knew he needed to say something to Dom, it was clear the other man was panicking but he didn't have a voice. Instead, he just pulled Dom to him hugging him close and sobbed into the other man's shoulder.
Whatever he was soothing Dom figured it had to be something big. Billy hardly ever cried over anything; it usually drove Dom insane. Even when they would watch teary movies, Dom would be bawling but Billy would be sitting there as if nothing was happening. "What is it, Bills?"
"I'm not against stuffed animals." Billy finally whispered through his tears. "I used to have one, a bear just like that one, I gave it to my mom before she and Dad left one night.. I told them it would protect them." He hugged Dom tighter before continuing. "It didn't. That was the night they died."
"Why didn’t you just say so," Dom exclaimed, feeling horrible that he forced Billy into doing this. There were only a handful of people who knew how painful it was for Billy to remember his childhood- Dom being one of them. He should have seen the clues with this one. "I'm so sorry."
Billy pulled away slowly, unable to look Dom in the eye. He walked over and sat down on the bed, picking up his bear. "I didn't want to spoil your fun, that's why I didn't say anything."
Dom quietly came and sat down beside Billy. "It's not fun if your friend isn't enjoying it."
"I was. It's just, I blamed my bear when I was younger for my parents' deaths. The bear's name was Troy and before I gave him to my parents, I carried him around everywhere. However after the incident, I was glad that I never saw the bear again. It wasn't his fault though, the bear was innocent."
"Troy understands." Dom replied back quietly squeezing Billy's hand.
"How do you know?"
"Stuffed animals, they understand everything. I am sure that Troy tried to protect your parents." He reached behind and brought up Billy!dog. He hugged the dog close, "I'm sure you will protect me, as well."
Billy smiled wearily, letting Dom's head hold his chin up. "You never fail to amuse me."
Dom leaned back from Billy then leaned forward and kissed him reassuringly on the lips. "Don't worry, I won't ever leave you. I'll be here in both bear form and human. I'll protect you."
"I love you." Billy whispered in Dom's ear. "Tonight, I'm cuddling you."
