He was seventeen when he took his first.

Dom and some mates were in a nightclub – underage, but the owners didn't seem overly concerned with legalities – and one of them had 'scored'.

The pill lay small and pink in the palm of his friend's hand; a smiling face grinned cheerfully up at Dom from its centre. It looked harmless enough and Dom knew how to take care of himself, so he thought, 'why not?'

He didn't taste the tablet as he swallowed and the faint chalkiness it left behind was quickly washed away by another swig of beer

This is it, this is living Dom thought as he danced. It could never get any better than right there and right then. The press of warm bodies against him, the music pounding in his ears and echoing in his bones, lights in the air, lights behind his eyes and the stamp of hundreds of feet turning the ground to thunder.

The first time he stood on his surfboard he realised he had been wrong. Then the first time he stood on a wave, under a wave, inside a wave, with the ocean surrounding and supporting and guiding him to shore he wanted to give his seventeen year old self a slap. That kid was a moron. He had just been one stoned bloke in a crowd with other stoned blokes, chemicals pumping through their blood as they danced with their arms in the air. It was an empty, false joy, supplied by a table not earned through courage and companionship.

"Here."

"Huh?"

Billy gestured at the purple bruise an unfortunate wipe out had left on Dom's calf. "For your leg"

Dom had thought the clattering from the kitchen had been Billy searching for a bottle opener; instead he stood before Dom holding two painkillers.

"I know what a delicate lad you are and I can't stand the though of having to listen to you moaning in pain all evening. Here."

"Thanks."

Dom held out his hand and Billy tipped the white tablets into his palm. Letting out an 'oomph' as he flopped onto the sofa Billy nodded in approval as Dom swallowed the aspirin with some water.

"So, now onto the important stuff," he held up two take away menus, "Indian or Thai?"

This is it, Dom thought, this is living.

Good job! Thank you for not writing an angsty Monaboyd. I don't think I could have read one today.

Very nice. I love the smooth transition, that was very well written. Of course I would've liked it if you'd kept going a bit longer, but I suppose a vague PG will have to do... ;)

I give thanks for and credit to [livejournal.com profile] blondiusmaximus, and her crack-doodle abilities. "It's all about the love" was the prompt I gave her, and she gifted me with the fabulous sketch.
