untitled birthday ficlet

"It's past midnight. Why didn't you call?" Dom says, trying not to sound accusatory.
He hasn't spent all day waiting on the phone call. He hasn't, really. He went out with friends. He celebrated. He drank and smoked and and ate cake.
The cake was good. So were the drinks.
"Because," Billy says, and he yawns. "Because I forgot."
"You didn't forget!" Dom says, holding on to his temper for about .7 seconds before it explodes. "How did you fucking forget?!"
"I just did, don't get melodramatic. Not like you've never forgotten anything before. It's not a big deal."
Dom hangs up the phone.
~*~
"Don't hang up."
"Why not? Look, just let me have a good sulk and ring me tomorrow, okay? I'll be-"
"Dom," Billy laughs, and sounds very tired. "Dom, I didn't forget. I was... held up."
"What do you mean? Where are you? It's loud behind you."
"I was held up," Billy says again. "Things didn't quite pan out the way I wanted them to. It was, eh... it was going to be a grand surprise and all, but it didn't work."
Dom goes quiet. "Surprise?"
"I was flying in for the weekend. But I got bumped at my first layover, and I just... I'm at the airport now, but they've lost my rental car reservations and they don't have any left, and I've been waiting for a bloody cab for about an hour."
"You're here?"
"I was supposed to be there in time for your birthday. For dinner. But... they... I've spent all day pulling the belligerent celebrity card because I wanted to be there. Turns out I'm not that big of a celebrity. Or maybe just not belligerent enough."
"You need me to come get you?"
"No, I called the cab company back. They sent it, someone else must have gotten it. Another's on it's way. Just leave the front light on and the door unlocked. I should be there in about an hour."
"I'll be up waiting."
"You have to work tomorrow, get some sleep."
"I couldn't now if I tried. And stop bossing me around."
Billy laughs. "Fine. I'll see you soon, then?"
"Can't wait, Billy."
~*~
"Wha... Billy?"
Billy lets his bag drop to the floor. "I woke you, fuck."
"Don't care." Dom sits up, stretches. "Look at you. You're here."
"Seven hours late, and past your birthday."
"Doesn't matter." Dom tucks his legs under him and tilts his body toward the empty side of the couch, holds his arms out. "You're here. That's wonderful."
Billy's head finds his shoulder, and Billy takes in a deep breath. "I'm so tired. Can't even properly make up for-"
"Nothing to make up for." Dom tips his head to the side and kisses Billy on the cheek. "And if there is, it can wait until tomorrow."
"Can it involve birthday spankings?"
"Maybe we'll reverse that tradition. After all, it's you making it up..." Dom grins and kisses Billy again, closer to his mouth. Billy turns his head and it lingers for a second, then a faint indrawn breath, and another press of lips, and they're properly snogging.
"Take me to bed, old man?" Billy said, finger poking at Dom's shoulder.
Dom nips at the finger. "You do realise you have no right to call me old?"
"I'm a rebel." Billy yawns again. "Bed!"
"Bed." Dom stands up slowly, and pulls Dom with him.
Billy hums happy birthday as they walk to the bedroom.

And this made me smile. Hard to imagine Billy trying to use the celebrity card, but he'd do it for Dom.
