Full moon. Billy now understood the feelings that had been tugging at him for the past week. They had been leading to here and now.

He had worried that he would feel uncomfortable out in the clearing without his clothes, but it felt right to be naked next to Dom under the stars. Their skin glowed gently in the twilight.

Dom smiled at him, not his usual mischievous grin, this smile said 'Everything will be okay, I love you Billy.'

Billy returned the smile and leant over to give Dom a kiss. He'd chosen to be a werewolf was because he'd wanted to share his life with Dom; and he'd wanted Dom to share his life with him. All of his life. In sickness and health, for richer or poorer, under the sun as a man or the moon as a wolf.

Somewhere in his fear of the unknown and strange newness of the changes in his body Billy had forgotten that, but how he was here waiting for the moon to rise with Dom beside him everything fell into place.

They'd both woken at midnight the night before. Billy's sleep had been restless and he'd been woken abruptly by a dream he couldn't remember; and in turn Billy's tossing and turning had woken Dom. They had talked for the rest of the night; Dom reassuring, Billy being reassured. Dom resting his head on Billy's chest as he told him stories and secrets. He felt calmer than he'd expected to. It was comforting to know that everything that was about to happen was out of his hands, all he had to do was experience it.

Then he felt it; he felt it before he saw it. The moon appeared, round and silver; she shone bright as the sun and filled the sky above them.

Billy found himself on his knees digging his fingernails into the earth, he just had time to whisper a quick prayer before the change started.

He back arched involuntarily and his muscles undulated and shifted. His limbs flexed and moulded into four powerful legs and the skin on his feet and hands became pads and claws. His spine extended into a tail and his jaw lengthened and Billy felt his top teeth extend past this bottom lip.

There was pain; caught between the states of man and beast Billy had no voice but if he had he would have cried out. The pain was one of excursion, of his body being pushed beyond its limits. Billy had made his peace with it being an inevitable part of the process and he could bear it.

"I'll be right beside you." Dom had told him. "But once the change starts you go deep into yourself. I'll be there, but I won't be able to reach you until it's finished."

A wave of fire burst over Billy's skin and his body was covered in a dark reddish brown fur. The most curious change of all though was happening in his mind. He felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. Logic and words drifted and spun away, and an awareness at a baser level took over. Sound, scent, hunger and instinct. The wind ruffled his fur and carried tantalising smells from the forest to him, the woods looked different, more alive. They sang songs to him about the life teaming within it and all the things just waiting to be explored.

It was indescribable. Later Billy would search for ways to articulate the feeling, but he would be unable to find the words.

He turned and looked over at Dom. The silver grey wolf beside him was shining, its ears alert and its blue eyes wide and sparkling. Billy understood the meaning of its stance. Delight

Dom shook himself and stretched, then threw back his head and howled. Billy was compelled to join him and the howl that rumbled from deep in his chest mingled with Dom's in a deep, powerful duet. We're here, they called, together. Their voices echoed around the trees sending birds flying.

When the howling ceased Dom looked at Billy and pawed at the ground. Come, the gesture said, run.

Billy ached to run. His muscles were coiled to sprint and chase and explore. They had the whole forest to themselves and the freedom to spend the night just as they pleased. Together. Yes, Billy replied.

Side by side the wolves disappeared into the night.
