Chapter 12
“Is Morgan asleep?” Dom asks
“Yeah love, are you ready for this?” Dom nods and takes Billy into his arms to hold him close. “It will be okay… They have to know sometime.” “I know I was just hoping it wouldn’t be for a few more years… I wish it wasn’t such a big deal, we’re a family why should people care; our kids are the same as anyone else’s.” Billy says into Dom’s chest. “They aren’t any different but we are that’s the problem.” Dom says looking down on Billy. Billy takes a deep breath and let’s go of Dom. “Let’s get this over with.” Dom catches Billy’s hand in his own as the move into the living room where the girls are playing. “Girls can we talk to you?” Billy says calmly. “We didn’t do it.” The twins look up from their coloring. “No loves, you didn’t do anything we just need to talk to you about something important, can you come sit down with us for a while.” Dom asks sitting down on the couch, while Billy turns off the TV. Billy comes to Dom’s side to sit down. “Okay Papa.” Says Jamie climbing into Billy’s lap; Merry curls into Dom’s side. “Girls how would you like to see where your Da grew up and live there for a while… not forever we will come home.” Dom asks once they are all seated. The twins look at each other but don’t say a word, they look a bit confused. “Papa and I are going to be in a movie and we have to go to Scotland to film it, but only if you are okay with it… Papa and I can show you where you two were born and I can show you where I grew up. We can go visit grandma and grandpa a lot more and Aunt Maggie would be around all the time… does that sound good?” Billy asks letting the information sink in. “I wanna see grandma and grandpa and Auntie Maggie but I don’t want to leave home why can’t they do it here?” Jamie says quietly. “We wouldn’t be gone too long about five or six months…and I know that seems like a long time but we will come back, if we didn’t JJ would be very unhappy with Papa.” The girls smile at Dom’s remark and look at each other for a long while; Billy’s hand starts the shake in Dom’s. Finally the girls nod and Merry says, “We’ll go.” Dom and Billy smile at each other and hug the girls. “That’s wonderful girls, Mr. Stevens will be very happy to hear that.” Billy says with a smile.
Dom looks over at Billy to ask if they should go on; Billy’s smile fades but he nods to continue. “A lot of people will be happy; your Ad hasn’t done a movie in a long time…” Dom is nervous as to how to go on, “Life is going to be different; a lot more people will be around and wanting to see you guys and people are going to say things…”
“Papa why do you and Da look so sad I thought you were happy we are going.” Jamie cuts in looking at her fathers. “Merry, Jamie have you ever wondered why you don’t have a mommy?” Billy asks holding his breath for the answer. “Sometimes” says Merry in a small voice, “But we have two daddies so it makes up for it!”
“You’re right Merry but not everyone sees it like that. Some people don’t like it when two boys or two girls love each other and have families together; they think it’s wrong or icky, but most of the time they just don’t understand it or it makes them feel uncomfortable so sometimes they say very mean things and do bad things to those families.” Dom says doing his best to shield his children from the horrors of the real world but still giving them the truth. There are tears in Billy’s eyes when Dom finishes from remembering when they first came out in Hollywood. Jamie’s small fingers wipe the tears from his eyes. “Da did people say mean things to you; is that why you are sad?” Jamie asks looking at her hands. “Yes my love… papa and I didn’t want you to face this without knowing sometimes people are just very cruel.” Dom pulls Billy closer to let Billy cry into his shoulder. “Da, I don’t care what people say you and papa are the best daddies in the whole world and like you and papa say words can’t hurt us.” Jamie rests her head on Billy’s chest and gives him a hug; cause that’s what he does when she is sad. “Remember if anyone ever says anything that we each other and no one can ever take that way from each other; we are a family.” Dom says to everyone and no one at the same time. They fall asleep in a pile together on the couch, not wanting to leave each others embrace.

Dom wakes some hours later and pulls a blanket over all of them. He runs his fingers through Billy’s hair and kisses the back of his neck. Billy stirs; slowly he opens his eyes, his face already has a sleepy grin on it that Dom can’t help but kiss. “It will be okay love our kids are strong and well loved.” Dom whispers to Billy still running his fingers through the auburn locks. “I know Mo Cridhe.” Billy looks into Dom’s eyes he can see the world and future in them; he leans in and catches Dom’s lips in a soft kiss. Dom deepens the kiss for a few minutes and they forget where they are and are in a world where it is just them in happiness and love. Billy feels Jamie move in his lap and breaks the kiss; he rests his head on Dom’s shoulder after giving him a parting kiss and closes his eyes to sleep. Dom is drifting off but murmurs “I love you” before he falls into dreamland.
