Chapter Thirty-Nine

“Dom, calm down, ok?” Billy said, placing a calming hand on Dom’s shoulder. He watched as Dom struggled with his tie. “Here. I’ll do that.”

“I’m just nervous. What if they say ‘no’? I really want these boys.”

Billy finished putting on Dom’s tie. “I want them too. Why would they say no?”

Dom sighed. “She was worried. About us.”

“Oh,” Billy said as he sat on the bed. “You’d think by now people wouldn’t worry about such things.”

“Yeah, well, you can’t fixed stupid.”

“That was very profound, Dom,” Billy said as Dom walked over to the bed.

“Let’s go.” Dom held out his hand and pulled Billy to his feet. He didn’t let go of Billy’s hand until they arrived at the orphanage.

Mrs. Henders smiled as Dom entered the room. “Please sit, Mr. Monaghan. Mr. Boyd, if you’ll wait outside.”

Billy nodded and squeezed Dom’s hand before leaving the room.

“Mr. Monaghan, I’ve read the reports and I’ve talked to the boys. All very positive.”

Dom smiled. “So...so I get them?”

Mrs. Henders sighed. “I’m sorry, Mr. Monaghan, but I’m afraid we can’t place the boys with you.” She shuffled the papers in front of her. “We just aren’t comfortable placing three boys with two gay men.”

Dom couldn’t believe his ears. “What...what about Lucas?” he stammered. “He’s fine.”

“That’s a bit different. Mr. Boyd is a blood relative. I’m sorry.”

Dom stood up and quickly left the room. He ran out of the orphanage, not stopping to talk to Billy. He collapsed on the sidewalk and sobbed openly into his hands.

Billy ran out and knelt behind Dom, cradling him in his arms. “Dommie, love, what happened?”

Dom sniffled and clutched Billy’s t-shirt. “She...she said they wouldn’t place them with me. She...she said we couldn’t have them.”

Billy sighed and ran his hand through Dom’s hair as he rocked the younger man. “I’m so sorry, Dommie.”

Dom wiped his eyes. “It’s because of us. They ‘aren’t comfortable placing three boys with two gay men,’” he said mocking Mrs. Henders voice.

Billy held Dom closer. “I’m sorry, Dom.”

Dom looked up at Billy. “I won’t leave you just to get them,” he whispered.

“Come on. Let’s go home. Lucas has his first performance tonight. Seems like it was so long again he told us about that part.”

Dom allowed Billy to help him to his feet. “I don’t know if I can stand to go,” he whispered.

Billy nodded. He knew Lucas would be disappointed. “Decide that later. It’s not for another few hours anyways. Let’s go.” He led Dom to their car and drove home.

Dom sat silently beside Billy, his forehead pressed against the glass. It had started to rain. It seemed as though Glasgow was trying to match Dom’s mood.

Billy opened the door and helped Dom inside. “Jacks Luke We’re back Go sit on the couch, love,” he whispered to Dom, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Jackson came into the room. He had come to watch Lucas and would be attending the play that evening. “So? How did it go?” he asked.

Billy shook his head. “Stupid, ignorant bastards,” he muttered.

“Jesus,” Jackson said as he ran a hand through his hair. “I wish I could help.”

Billy nodded. “Where’s Luke?”
Lucas walked into the living. He saw Dom lying on the couch, his hands over his eyes. “Uncle Dom? Are you ok?”

Dom uncovered his eyes and looked at Lucas. The boy’s face was full of concern. He looked very much like his dad at that moment. “Not really, Little Scot,” he said as he reached out and brushed back Lucas’ hair.

“They aren’t coming to live with us, are they?” Lucas whispered as he sat on the couch.

Dom shook his head. “No, no they aren’t.”

Lucas scowled. “I’m sorry, Uncle Dom.” He stood up and walked over towards the end of the couch. He leaned over and hugged Dom. “You can be my dad, too, you know.”

Dom pulled Lucas up onto his chest and held the boy tightly. “Thank you, Little Scot.” He buried his face in Lucas’ hair before kissing the top of his head. “You’re a good kid, you know that?”

Lucas propped himself up on Dom’s chest. “Really?”

“Yeah,” Dom said as he brushed back a stray lock of Lucas’ hair. “Excited about tonight?”

Lucas nodded. He didn’t try to hide the grin that snuck in over his face. “You’re coming, right?”

Dom thought for a moment. He really wanted to stay at home and wallow in his own self-pity, but he looked into Lucas’ eyes. They were full of love and lacked the prejudice he had just experienced. “Yeah, I’m coming. I wouldn’t miss it for anything.”

Lucas smiled and he rolled off Dom. “Good. I want you there.”

Dom sat up. “Luke, sit with me a sec, ok?”

Lucas nodded and sat on the couch.

“Luke, your dad told you about ‘gay’, right?”

Lucas nodded. “Is that why you can’t get them? Cause of you and Dad?”

Dom nodded. “Yeah, Luke. That’s exactly why.”

Lucas scowled again. “That’s stupid, Uncle Dom. Fucking stupid.”

Dom looked down at Lucas, very shocked. “Lucas, what did you just say?”

Lucas turned red. “You and Dad say it.”

“I don’t care. You don’t say it.” Dom put his hand under Lucas’ chin and raised his head up until their eyes meet. “Got it?”

Lucas nodded. “Yes, Uncle Dom.”

“Now, you are right, it is ‘fucking stupid’, just don’t go around saying that, ok, Little Scot?”

Lucas nodded again.

“Go find your dad. He was looking for you.”

Lucas hopped off the couch and ran out of the room.

Dom laid back on the couch and covered his eyes again. He should’ve known better than to get his hopes up.

Lucas entered the kitchen and found Billy and Jackson talking softly. “Dad, why are people so stupid?” he asked.

Billy sighed. “Dom told you?”

Lucas nodded. “Why?”

Billy reached and ran his hand over Lucas’ hair. “They’ve just been taught wrong is all. And, unfortunately, you can’t fix stupid.”

Lucas crossed his arms over his chest. “I hate stupid people.”

Billy leaned over towards Lucas. He didn’t have to lean too far as Lucas had started a growth spurt and was quickly gaining on him. “Luke, stupid people hate. Do you understand?”

Lucas shrugged. “I guess. I told Uncle Dom he could be my Dad, too. Is that ok?”

Billy smiled. His ten-year-old son was far wiser than most kids his age. “I think that’s wonderful, Boo.” He kissed the top of his son’s head.

Dom sat between Billy and Jackson as they watched the play. For something put on by primary school students, it wasn’t half bad. One little girl forgot her lines and sobbed until her mother came and took her off the stage. A teacher read her part for the rest of the night.

Lucas was by far the best of them all. He played one of the three leads and got a standing ovation. He grinned broadly.

Billy and Dom took Lucas out for ice cream to celebrate. It was also an attempt to lift Dom’s crushed spirits.

Over the next few weeks, Dom sulked around the house. There was little for him to do while Lucas was at school and Billy at rehearsal. He only smiled when it was the three of them.

Billy tried his best to boast Dom’s spirits. He tried to get him a spot in his troupe, but Dom turned him down. He got Jackson to baby-sit and tried to plan a few romantic nights out, only to have them end with Dom crying himself to sleep. Billy was at his wits end. He decided it was time to call in some help.

Dom sat on the couch, a bowl of ice cream propped between his knees. He sighed as he stared at the TV screen. A knock at the door broke him from his thoughts. He placed the bowl on the table and shuffled toward the door.

“Yeah?” he said, as he opened the door.

“Dominic Monaghan, you crazy fucker ” Orlando said as he wrapped Dom in a giant bear hug.

“Orli? What are you doing here?”

Elijah appeared behind Orlando. “Billy called us and asked us to stop by and break you out of your self imposed rut.”

“And what, exactly, constitutes ‘us’?” Dom said as he leaned against doorpost.

“The fellowship,” pipped Bean as he shoved past everyone and into house. “It’s fucking cold, you fools. Get inside.”

Dom watched as Orlando, Elijah, Viggo, and Astin shuffled past him. “Billy, you fucker,” he muttered to himself. But even Dom couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face.
