Title: Propinquity (2/?)

Pairing: Billy/Dom
Rating: G
Summary: Dom calls.
Disclaimer: This is all very not true. So don’t believe it.
Author’s Note: This be part of a series. I recommend you read Part I first, my pretties. Still not very action-packed, but bear with me. It'll come eventually, I'm just warming up.

Billy woke up with a start as his phone rang.

'Who would be calling me at this bloody hour?' Billy thought as he reached drowsily towards the phone.

"Hello?" Billy asked, in an standoffish tone.

"It's me."

Billy paused. The last time he jumped to conclusions, he was bitterly disappointed.

"Who's me?" Billy asked.

"Who do you think, Bills?" The voice was very familiar, and very longed-for.

"Dom, where have you been? Everyone's worried about you. I'm worried about y..."

Dom interrupted. "I had to go somewhere. Somewhere to think."

Billy noticed a solemn feel in Dom's voice. He knew that something was wrong ever since he learnt that no-one knew where Dom was. This was very unlike the Dom that he knew. The youthful, vibrant Dommie that was his best friend. The Dom that always cheered everyone else up, even if he was exhausted or feeling down.

"Where are you, Dommie?" Billy was worried, and Dom could tell this from the slight quiver in Billy's voice. He changed his tone of voice.

"Ah, I'm sat on a hotel balcony with a fantastic view and a couple o' beers by my side. You should see it, mate."

"Are you okay?"

"Me?" Dom hesitated. "Sure. Its just a little lonely here."

"Where exactly is 'here', Dom?" Billy started to get a little annoyed at the avoidance of his questions. Billy just needed to know that Dom was safe, and that there was nothing to worry about.

"New Zealand."

Billy raised his eyebrows at this bit of information. The guys hadn't been back to New Zealand since the pick-ups for the last movie, and Dom hadn't told Billy that he wanted to go back.

"New Zealand?"

"Yeah. I wanted to visit some of our old haunts. Some of the funniest moments were there. I guess I just missed them. Its difficult when we can't just hang out anymore, y'know. With you over there and me in L.A., it just sucks, you know?" Dom's voice became low-spirited again. He missed Billy as much as Billy missed him.

"You know, you could have just come over here to see me, instead of going to New Zealand. You can remember things here just as well as over there."

Another pause.

"Well, I needed some thinking time. I've had a lot on my mind, Bills, and I don't think seeing you would have helped."

Those words knocked Billy. He was Dom's best friend, and would do anything to help him. They were like brothers, and nothing was going to stop Billy from making all Dom's problems go away.

"Billy?" Dom noticed the gap in conversation. "Are you still there?"

"..."

"Billy?"

"Dommie..." Billy's mind ceased to function. He couldn't believe that Dom saw him as something that would make a problem worse. He felt like a burden.

"Billy, what's wrong? Look, if its about what I said then I..."

"Dom, I have to go," Billy interrupted, "there's someone at the door."

A pause.

"At that time in the morning?" Dom knew that Billy was lying, and he knew that it was because of something he said. He mentally kicked himself and hoped that Billy would listen to him. He knew that this was not the best time to bring up the subject, but maybe it was the only way that Billy would understand why he had to get away for a bit.

Billy felt like an idiot. Of course there wasn't anyone at the door. But he wanted to end the conversation. He didn't want to feel like he was the reason Dom was upset. He didn't want to ruin what they had. The best friendship that Billy could have ever asked for. But he knew that running away wouldn't solve anything.

"Bills, if you want I can come and see you? We can remember things together, y'know, like you said."

"I guess we could." Billy knew that this would be better than parting on bad terms, even if it would be awkward.

"Well, I'll get a flight as soon as I can. You had better start cleaning up. I expect to see everything sparkle when I get there." Dom chuckled. He hoped that he didn't sound too fake. He didn't want Billy to be angry with him. Not when he knew that eventually he'll have to tell him why he went to New Zealand.

"You betcha." Billy knew that Dom was faking it. But he played along. He wanted Dom to come over to see him. He missed him. And he wanted to know why Dom had gone to New Zealand. And why Dom couldn't trust him to help him.

Billy hung up the phone and looked at his clock.

6:04am.

"Well," mumbled Billy, "I'd better start cleaning." And with that he tottered off to the bathroom.
